TBR Football understands that Thomas Frank is pushing for Rodrigo Bentancur to be offered a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Uruguayan’s current deal is due to run until the summer of 2026 and the Danish head coach is keen for his future to be secured by Spurs.
Bentancur is quickly becoming an established player under Thomas Frank, having completed 90 minutes in the UEFA Super Cup Final penalty shootout defeat to PSG.
Having had a chance to assess his Tottenham Hotspur squad, Frank is now hoping that an agreement can be struck over a new deal for the 28-year-old.
Thomas Frank wants Rodrigo Bentancur to sign new Tottenham contract
Rodrigo Bentancur has really impressed Spurs’ new manager and discussions over a new deal are likely to take place soon, sources have told TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey.
TBR Football revealed back in May that Bentancur was a contender to become the next captain at Tottenham, and new contract talks were already being planned.
Now, having had a chance to assess the former Juventus midfielder, Frank has made it clear to Spurs that he should be issued with a bumper new deal.
Bailey told TBR Football: “Bentancur is someone who we have covered previously, but he’s a player who has done really well. Obviously, a lot of people are thinking, ‘Oh, is there room for him in Frank’s side?’ There clearly is.
“The thing with Bentancur is his new contract. I do understand that Thomas Frank wants him to progress with that – he’s only got a year left, I think. My understanding is that Thomas Frank wants him to sign a new deal. He’s very happy with him.
“Obviously, we saw a strange formation on Wednesday, but I don’t think that’s really indicative of where Tottenham are going. We will see them play in the front three. I think he wants to be able to press and shut down from the front, which is a sign they’re still not done in the final third.”
Thomas Frank has a midfield headache at Tottenham
Frank has a nice midfield headache at Tottenham of having several top options to pick from in his squad.
Against PSG, he opted for Bentancur, Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr, which meant Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray were left on the bench.
Tottenham are set to add Eberechi Eze to their options, with Tottenham remaining locked in talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for the 27-year-old.
