When we collate the full list of players that have moved for €100m or more, we can quickly see that it is a who’s who of current or former world-class players. Unsurprisingly, Neymar’s €222m move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 remains the most expensive transfer in the history of the sport, followed by Kylian Mbappé’s move from Monaco to the French capital just one year later. Ousmane Dembélé claims third spot, following his move from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona in the same year as Neymar’s record sale, while Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool takes fourth spot and Philippe Coutinho’s departure from Anfield sits fifth.

Tonali’s €108m move to Tottenham will place the midfielder 18th on the list, overtaking Paul Pogba’s €105m move to Manchester United in 2016, which sits above Gareth Bale’s departure from Spurs in 2013. The fee also means that Tonali will become the sixth most expensive midfielder of all time, listing behind Moisés Caicedo, Declan Rice, Enzo Fernández, Jude Bellingham, and of course Anderson's move to Man City in this summer window. However, Tonali will be the first Italian player to join this exclusive club and the first Tottenham player. But whether that changes this summer remains to be seen.
