Terrible decisions on and off the pitch have come back to haunt Tottenham.

It all comes down to the final gameweek of the season for Tottenham Hotspur as they take on Everton at home, hoping to clinch top-flight safety.

It is finely poised for neutrals, while for Spurs fans, the nerves may already be jangling as the outcome of that last game will decide their fate this season. The equation is very simple for the Lilywhites; they must avoid a defeat to Everton at any cost. However, a loss on the judgement day, coupled with West Ham’s win over Leeds United, will relegate Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Even if they avoid the drop to the Championship, it would mark a second successive 17th-place finish in the league for Spurs. The agony, pain and the heartbreak that the Tottenham fans have suffered is not the by-product of one season. It was the hoarded consequence of structural decay that nobody in authority had been willing to address directly until it became intolerable to ignore.

Glenn Hoddle feels the ‘system’ at Tottenham is not working

There are several issues at Tottenham right now, but the most glaring one remains the poor transfer decisions made by the top brass in recent years. The Lewis family, along with former executive chairman Daniel Levy, have failed to recruit players of genuine quality consistently.

“The Europa League triumph really papered over the cracks,” Glenn Hoddle said in an exclusive interview with the Metro.

“There’s been a crack there for quite some time. The system is clearly not working at the moment and needs to be revised. If this were any business, that’s what they’d be doing. They’d be stripping it down and saying, this ain’t working, let’s get a new CEO or new board and go from there.

“What I’m hoping is that we stay up and the fear of going down, the fear of actually thinking about it and getting so close to dropping, actually ignites something in the club from above the playing staff, above the coaching staff, that this can’t happen again. That’s got to be a crossroads, which is the lowest crossroads. That’s got to be the lowest one.”

Unexpected season for Tottenham fans

Just 12 months ago, Spurs were celebrating the end of their 17-year wait for a major trophy after lifting the Europa League against all odds. It was an enormous moment for the club, as it finally felt like we were moving in the right direction.

However, it is fair to say that things have gone downhill for the North Londoners since Ange Postecoglou was shown the door. As Hoddle rightly points out, the Europa League triumph now looks like it papered over the cracks. False promises, a lack of investment in the squad, and questionable boardroom decisions have placed the majority shareholders of ENIC at odds with our fans for several years.

It is high time they made amends for their total failure to handle the institution of Tottenham. A total overhaul from top to bottom is the need of the hour.
