Tottenham have announced a surprise new contract extension to a player who hasn't featured since injuring his ankle in the defeat against West Ham in January

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Ben Davies has signed a new one-year contract with the club.

Davies, 33, was set to be a free agent come the end of June, but Spurs have decided to offer him fresh terms and he has agreed to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Welshman has been at Spurs since 2014, when he made the move from Swansea City and has become a cult figure during his time in north London, making 363 appearances and being part of the team that won the Europa League last season.

Speaking after penning a new Tottenham contract, Davies told the club's website : "Tottenham Hotspur really feels like home. It's been a huge part of my football journey and I'm grateful for what the club has given me so far in my career.

"It's been difficult over the past few months, not being able to help the team on the pitch in some tough moments due to injury. So I tried to help the boys off it as much as I could, being a voice in the dressing room and around the group, contributing in any way I could.

"My heart's on my sleeve for this club and I'll give everything for it."

There were fears that Davies' Tottenham career was over when he suffered a horrific ankle injury during a 2-1 defeat against West Ham in mid-January. He underwent two surgeries to fix the problem and was ruled out for the remainder of the season, missing the final 22 matches.

In total, Davies played just five times for Tottenham across the 2025/26 campaign, after missing more than a month earlier in the season after suffering a hamstring problem.

Although it's unclear if Davies will be fit for the start of the new season, his presence in the dressing room is no doubt going to be invaluable, especially to the younger players.

Indeed, Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi name-checked Davies as someone who helped the club get across the line to remain in the Premier League at the end of last season.

After the 1-0 win against Everton - which secured Tottenham's top-flight status - De Zerbi praised the players who have been able to turn the club's form around and avoid relegation.

He said: "Dragusin. Dragusin was top because he didn’t play, but he was always positive inside the dressing room. Inside the pitch. [Rodrigo] Bentancur. Because Bentancur, when he came back from the injury, he wanted to play. He came to me to say, 'Hey, I want to play. I'm ready to play.'

"Joao Palhinha, because at the beginning of my time, he didn't play in Sunderland, here with Brighton and Wolverhampton. Ben Davies. Yesterday, he came to the Lodge with us.

"Djed Spence. Before the Chelsea game, he came in my office. Another one to say 'I want to play.' He said, 'You always speak about the personality, the courage. I'm here, if you want to play with one player,' and he was fantastic, I love it. Micky van de Ven. Great guy, sensitive guy.

"I spent a lot of time with him, because I consider him the best centre-back, left-centre-back in the Premier League, with Levi Colwill, because he was my former player, and I can't forget him. But a lot of other players. Richarlison, Archie Gray, I can't say one."

De Zerbi has done an excellent job since being appointed at Spurs in March, winning three and drawing two of his seven matches in charge - a run that helped keep Tottenham in the Premier League.
