Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez emerges as a target for Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur could be set for big changes this summer, with Ange Postecoglou’s future in North London now looking increasingly in doubt.
Despite guiding the club to their first trophy after more than 17 long years, Ange Postecoglou is not assured of his position at Spurs. They did a great job by winning the Europa League, but concerns remain over their league form that saw the Lilywhites finish just a spot above the three relegated teams.
The reliable Fabrizio Romano stated on Monday that a decision on the Australian’s future will be delivered very soon. Off the pitch, though, work continues to rebuild the squad that endured a disastrous domestic 2024/25 season. There are several areas of the pitch that needs reinforcing before the new campaign kicks off.
One of them is the defence, which was all over the place for large parts thanks to a combination of persistent injury problems and poor form of key players. There was no stability whatsoever at the back, with Spurs managing only six clean sheets during the entire league campaign.
The goalkeeping unit also witnessed problems. Guglielmo Vicario spent over three months on the sidelines following an ankle fracture. Fraser Forster was tasked with deputising for the injured Vicario but he made alarming mistakes. This led to the club chiefs to act in the transfer market and bring in youngster Antonin Kinsky.
Kinsky made a bright start to life at N17, keeping a clean sheet in his very first game against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup. However, he started showing his inexperience later on and made several errors leading to cheap goals. Vicario fortunately recovered in time and helped Spurs keep a clean sheet in the Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao.
Now, Tottenham have been alerted to the availability of one goalkeeper from the Premier League. According to a report from Football Insider, Emiliano Martinez is looking to leave Aston Villa this summer, and Tottenham could join Manchester United in the race for his signature. The Aston Villa glovesman has already rejected a move to Saudi Arabia as he is holding out for a move to a European club and would be open to joining another Premier League club.
Emiliano Martinez has slowly but surely become one of the best goalkeepers in the world after swapping Arsenal for Aston Villa in 2020, impressing in the Premier League while also helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. As such, the 32-year-old has often been linked with top European clubs. The likelihood of him leaving Villa after five years is very high this summer.

Spurs’ interest in the Argentinean international would raise concerns over the long-term future of Vicario. Martinez remains open to joining a Premier League club but may not swap Villa for Spurs, because of his former allegiance with Arsenal. However, if he is willing to move to N17, Tottenham must do everything possible to get him in as the 32-year-old would be an instant upgrade over Vicario.
That said, it remains to be seen how concrete is the Lilywhites’ interest in signing a goalkeeper this summer transfer window, especially the Villa star.
