Gameweek 4 of the 2026/27 Premier League season served up another rip-roaring set of matches, with the title race, relegation battle and fight for Europe starting to take shape nicely. Arsenal moved to the top of the table with a 2-0 win at Sunderland, Fulham held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield, and Man City beat Man United 1-0 in a controversial derby clash.
Meanwhile, we’re edging closer to the first international break since the 2026 FIFA World Cup. England are taking on newly crowned world champions Spain in a mouth-watering encounter at Wembley Stadium, before further tests against Croatia and Czechia follow. Elsewhere, Scotland are set to start over again under new manager Sebastien Pocognoli.
Today’s Premier League rumours round-up gets underway at Old Trafford, where Manchester United have been rocked by the news that 15-year-old wonderkid JJ Gabriel has asked to leave the club. According to Talk Sport, the “generational talent” has informed the club of his bombshell decision, but will United are expected to battle to convince him to stay.
The story goes on to suggest that two of the Red Devils’ Premier League rivals are interested to signing the promising talent, with one of them likely to be Chelsea. There’s also believed to be attention from top level sides in Spain and Germany. Gabriel has a prolific scoring record at youth level, and netted a hat-trick in the UEFA Youth League last week.
The 3AM Verdict: If United fumble this, it will be truly remarkable. Gabriel is so highly rated by the club that he was said to be on the cusp of making his first appearance for the senior side in the Carabao Cup against Brighton. Things could now get messy, with the Premier League likely to be involved in resolving a particularly tricky case. If he does leave, his next club will be bagging themselves a serious talent, that’s for sure.
Tottenham ready to reignite Gibbs-White interest
Down in north London, it’s been far from the ideal start to the season for Spurs. They spent over £330m on new players, and currently lie 17th in the Premier League table with no wins or indeed goals scored in their opening four matches. According to Team Talk, the club are now looking to make a move for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White.
Tottenham tried and failed to sign the six-cap England international for £65m in 2025, in a messy affair that ended with the player signing a new contract. Come January, the tenacious midfielder will have just 18 months left on his deal, which could see Spurs spring into action and launch a move. Forest have been tipped to ward this interest off by offering their key player another contract extension.
The 3AM Verdict: Spurs went wild in the aisles over the summer window, and so far it doesn’t look to have done them much good. With James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevki and Xavi Simons all suffering injuries, Gibbs-White would certainly fill a void for Spurs in that part of the pitch. But will signing yet another big-money player who needs to gel with the new-look squad really solve their issues?
Man United continue centre-back hunt
Speaking of clubs resuming the chase for former targets, Football Insider have suggested that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite has once again piqued Man United’s interest, as they look to strengthen their struggling defence. The story says that they’re “now watching” the Toffees centre-back closely, with their plan being to finally sign him in 2027.
It’s suggested that a January move is unlikely to happen, with Everton certain to oppose losing a player of Branthwaite’s quality midway through the season. Next summer, however, could be United’s time - especially if Everton don’t qualify for Europe. The 24-year-old’s current deal runs through until 2030, which puts his club in a strong position when it comes to setting an asking price.
The 3AM Verdict: Were it not for some rotten luck with groin and hamstring injuries, Branthwaite would almost certainly be an England regular and playing for an elite Premier League club by now. Waiting to see if he can get through the whole season unscathed would be a smart move for United, who could do without adding another injury-prone defender to their back line.
