Tottenham are looking to bolster their midfield department in the summer.

Tottenham Hotspur have had a horrific season so far, and currently sit just one point outside the relegation zone in the Premier League with eight games left to play. But the N17 chiefs are still making plans for the upcoming summer transfer window as if the Lilywhites will be a top-flight club next season.

Spurs are certain to be in the market for a central midfielder when the summer window comes around, owing to their struggles to control the tempo of play and create chances from deep. The injury absences of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have hurt Tottenham’s chance creation from central areas of the pitch, while the likes of Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Joao Palhinha aren’t really known for their ability to dictate games and dominate possession.

This is exactly why the Hotspur Way bosses are keen to revisit their interest in a Premier League midfielder.

Tottenham make enquiry for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes

Tottenham were looking out for a possible replacement for Yves Bissouma last summer, and one of their targets was Wolverhampton Wanderers star Joao Gomes.

Joao Gomes played a key role in Wolves’ safety in the top-flight last season. After helping Wolves secure their top-flight status, he decided to pen fresh terms at Molineux until 2030, pouring cold water on speculation. However, with the Wanderers now destined to go down to the Championship, there is speculation again surrounding the Brazilian’s future.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham have made an enquiry for Gomes as they continue tracking his development. The midfielder’s commanding displays in recent victories over Aston Villa and Liverpool has highlighted his potential to top clubs. Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are all interested in the 25-year-old, who is expected to leave Wolves in the summer.

Gomes has racked up 29 Premier League appearances, registering a goal and an assist apiece. The deep-lying playmaker’s consistent displays in a Wolves shirt has earned him a place in the latest Brazil squad selected by coach Carlo Ancelotti. Despite the growing interest, he remains focused on finishing the season on a high and clinching a spot in the World Cup squad.

Tough to win Gomes’ signature amid hefty interest

Tottenham have been exploring options to bolster their midfield unit, someone who can make an immediate impact. They are looking at Gomes as one who can bring that technical ability to unlock rigid defences from deep and help the team dictate the play.

While Gomes has the technical ability, game awareness and experience, it would be extremely difficult for the Lilywhites to compete with their Premier League rivals for his signature, especially if they go down along with Wolves. So, the first and foremost objective of Tottenham is to preserve their top-flight status. Once that is achieved under Igor Tudor, the club bosses can become serious about pursuing South American talent.
