Tottenham remain keen on re-signing Kyle Walker-Peters on a potential free transfer from Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Thomas Frank as their new head coach. The Dane has replaced Ange Postecoglou and will be looking to bring in his players from former club Brentford.

Yoane Wissa is a player Thomas Frank wants at White Hart Lane, but the new Spurs gaffer is looking at other players as well to strengthen his squad. The North Londoners certainly need some help in defence, especially after last term’s lacklustre performances and injury issues.

Kevin Danso has been signed permanently from RC Lens after he did well on loan during the second half of 2024/25 season, but Cristian Romero’s uncertain future at the club means Daniel Levy is in the hunt for reinforcements in central defence. The Spurs honcho also is eyeing a fresh face in the full-back department after the release of Sergio Reguilon, which has left the current boss with just three recognised players in that position.

Several full-backs have been linked with a move to Tottenham in recent months, including Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.

Kyle Walker-Peters left Spurs in 2020, initially on loan to Southampton before moving there permanently. He has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the Saints. However, the Englishman sees his contract expire on June 30 (Transfermarkt), and then, he will be free to find another club as his Southampton future hangs in the balance.

Now, according to a report from Football London, the main reason behind Tottenham’s willingness to sign Walker-Peters on a potential free transfer from the Saints is to add another club-trained player to their Champions League squad. Currently, they have just one club-trained player in goalkeeper Brandon Austin.

The England full-back was a part of the Tottenham academy from 2013 to 2015 before graduating to the senior squad. He made 24 first-team appearances in all competitions, enjoying his breakthrough under former boss Mauricio Pochettino. At Southampton, Walker-Peters has become one of their best players in recent years. He was one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise torrid campaign for the South Coast club that ended in relegation this past term.

The aforementioned report adds Spurs need a total of four club-trained players in the squad for their Champions League adventure next year, and Walker-Peters is open to a return to his boyhood club. Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in the versatile full-back as they look to take advantage of Tottenham’s immediate priority of reinforcing other areas of the pitch.

As Walker-Peters is interested in a return to North London, Spurs can take their time in getting other areas sorted before landing his signature. On a potential free transfer, the 28-year-old could prove to be an extremely valuable acquisition for Frank.
