Ange Postecoglou made history at Tottenham during his two-year stint at N17.

Tottenham created history last season under Ange Postecoglou as the club ended its 17-year wait for a major trophy in spectacular fashion. The Lilywhites defied the odds to win the Europa League by defeating Manchester United in the final in Bilbao. It was a historic achievement that also secured Champions League football for the ongoing season. It is fair to say that Big Ange played a significant role in restoring the club’s pride after a prolonged period of underwhelming performances.

The Australian tactician had promised to deliver a major trophy in his second season at N17, and he stayed true to his word. Big Ange placed full focus on the Europa League midway through last season, effectively writing off the Premier League campaign. The entire club rallied behind the European competition as they aimed to end the North London club’s long-standing trophy drought.

However, fans were left stunned when Spurs announced the departure of Ange Postecoglou just days after the Europa League final. The Lilywhites stated their intention to compete strongly on all fronts this season, something they did not believe was achievable under the Australian manager. As a result, they appointed Thomas Frank as his successor. In hindsight, it is fair to suggest that the North Londoners made a costly mistake by bringing in the Dane last summer.

Ange Postecoglou is not looking to return to Tottenham in the coming days

Thomas Frank’s tenure at N17 proved to be short-lived, as he struggled to get the best out of his players this season. Under his guidance, the Lilywhites found themselves stuck in the bottom half of the league table, hovering just above the relegation zone. He gradually lost the support of the fans, and the players also appeared disillusioned with his tactical approach. Consequently, the club decided to part ways with him just seven months after his first game in charge.

Igor Tudor, his interim successor, has also been unable to make an immediate impact. The Croat arrived at N17 earlier last month following Frank’s dismissal, with the primary objective of stabilising the situation at Hotspur Way and helping the club avoid relegation from the Premier League. However, the 47-year-old has failed to win any of his six league matches in charge of Spurs. It now appears that the recent defeat against fellow relegation candidates Nottingham Forest could prove to be the final blow for Tudor.

Recent reports suggested that Ange Postecoglou could make a sensational return to N17 on an interim basis until the end of the season. The Australian tactician was recently asked whether he would ‘go back to his ex’ if the right opportunity arose. He did not dismiss the idea entirely, offering a response that sparked hope among Spurs supporters of a potential reunion with the manager who ended the club’s trophy drought.

However, Paul O’Keefe has since reported that Big Ange is unlikely to return to Spurs anytime soon and is not among the names being considered if the Lilywhites decide to part ways with Igor Tudor. Taking to X, O’Keefe said,

“I don’t see it (Ange Postecoglou returning) myself.”

Spurs arguably should not have parted ways with Ange Postecoglou in the first place. He understood the essence of the club and what it stood for. The Australian tactician was admired by the fans, and the players were fully committed to his vision. It never seemed logical to dismiss a manager who played such a pivotal role in ending the Lilywhites’ trophy drought and bringing silverware back to the club. He ‘dared to do’ and was ultimately sacked by Daniel Levy as a consequence, leaving the North Londoners struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League now.
