Tottenham have reportedly identified a new winger target as they look to strengthen out wide this summer, regardless of whether Ange Postecoglou is at the club or not. It has been a dire campaign for Spurs, although they could still bail themselves out by winning the Europa League and qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Even that might not be enough to save Postecoglou, who has overseen what could still turn out to be a record-setting campaign in all the worst ways. Tottenham are yet to surpass their worst-ever Premier League points total, and they are going to need eight points from a possible 12 in the league to surpass that total.

In the meantime, there will already be planning ongoing for next season, with Postecoglou’s future yet to be decided, with the recruitment process needing to start early given the intense competition between clubs for new players. One area Spurs need to strengthen is out wide, with Timo Werner headed back to RB Leipzig, while Heung-min Son is in the final years of his time at the club - and potentially his career.

Tottenham have an option to buy on Mathys Tel, who is on loan from Bayern Munich, and reports home and abroad suggest they will try to reduce that option fee, but they do seem to be keen to land the youngster at the right price. Elsewhere, it has been reported by TuttoSport that Spurs are interested in signing Juventus winger Nico Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is also reportedly being eyed by Brighton having hit form of late. The 27-year-old has made 31 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring four and assisting as many. He scored last time out against Monza, and he is being touted as a player who could be moved on by Juve.

He is currently on loan with Juventus but with a fee of around £23.8million already agreed with Fiorentina. The transfer links suggest Juventus may already be regretting that deal, potentially looking to instantly offload the winger as Igor Tudor looks to put his own stamp on this squad having taken over from Thiago Motta, who signed Gonzalez.

Tottenham also have an option to buy Werner, but Postecoglou has been openly critical of the winger at times, and it seems certain that he will be headed back to Leipzig. Postecoglou said of one of Werner’s performances earlier this season: "When you've got 18-year-olds [in the squad], it [that performance] is not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo, he's a German international. In the moment we're in right now - it's not like we've got many options - I need everyone to at least be going out there and trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn't acceptable.

"We need everybody, including him, to be contributing because we don't have the depth to leave people out if they perform poorly. I expect a level of performance from some of the senior guys, and tonight wasn't that." Those comments said it all.
