Tottenham Hotspur have made initial ‘contact’ with Fiorentina over a potential move for Nicolo Fagioli, according to a report by Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb. They are being linked with a swoop for the midfielder ahead of the summer. Newcastle United have also been mentioned as suitors.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 away by Fulham over the weekend. They are winless in their last 10 league games now. The London outfit sit 16th in the Premier League table.

Tottenham Hotspur linked with Nicolo Fagioli

Spurs’ chances of landing Fagioli in the next transfer window are dependent on what league they find themselves in next season. If they are relegated, they are unlikely to be able to lure him to England. Therefore, they need to stay up in the top flight amid their battle with the likes of West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Fagioli, 25, could be seen as someone to boost their midfield department. If he joined, he would give them more competition and depth in the middle of the park. In addition, he could offer them something different to what they already have at their disposal in his position.

The Italy international, who has seven caps to his name, played for Juventus for 10 years before leaving Turin last summer. He made 69 appearances for the Serie A giants and chipped in with three goals, as well as having loan spells away at Cremonese and Fiorentina to boost his development. The latter then snapped him up permanently and he hasn’t looked back since.

Igor Tudor’s reaction to Tottenham Hotspur loss to Fulham

Speaking after their defeat to Fulham, Spurs’ caretaker boss Igor Tudor said: "It's a complicated situation. A lot of problems. I cannot tell you nothing new. We need to find forces inside each of us. I said to the players. It's always what you are going to do. What do you want to do with yourself? More personality. More wish to do before reacting. Plenty of things.

"We lack when we attack. We are lacking the quality to score the goal. We are lacking in the middle to run. We are lacking behind to stay there and suffer and not concede the goal. An amazing situation."
