Tottenham has been linked with a shock move for Liverpool forward.
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to bring in reinforcements when the transfer window reopens in the summer.
After a disastrous campaign, which could end up in the unthinkable relegation, the club bosses will have their task cut out to rebuild the squad. Relegation to the Championship could lead to a squad overhaul, where several international players end up leaving the club. They would not want to waste one precious year of their careers playing in the second tier of English football.
If Spurs end up retaining their top-flight status, they will still have an opportunity to attract some quality players from the Premier League and beyond. As the Lilywhites continue to struggle with creativity and goals from wide areas, the club bosses will certainly be in the market for a new winger in the summer.
Tottenham linked with shock move for Liverpool star
The club made a baffling decision to sell Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace at the start of the winter transfer window, and then failed to bring in a replacement. Johnson’s exit, coupled with long-term injuries to Mohammed Kudus and Wilson Odobert, has left Tottenham with a lack of quality and depth in wide areas of the field. This is perhaps the reason why the N17 chiefs have started looking at wingers to improve the squad.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Cody Gakpo has been offered to clubs in the Premier League, including Tottenham, and around Europe as Liverpool attempts to gauge interest in their forward through third-party representatives.
The Reds are interested in signing Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon in the summer, and the exit of Cody Gakpo could make way for the England international. Gakpo has endured an up-and-down season in Merseyside, racking up eight goals and four assists in 42 appearances. Despite his questionable performances, manager Arne Slot continues to keep faith in his fellow Dutchman.
Considering his failure to produce consistent displays, even after getting a prominent role in the team following Luis Diaz’s exit to Bayern Munich, Liverpool bosses are now weighing whether a change would benefit their budding attacking setup. The likes of Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig, Napoli and AC Milan are monitoring Gakpo’s situation closely, while Tottenham are an option, as long as they successfully manage to stay in the Premier League, the report adds.
Perhaps we have seen glimpses of Gakpo’s potential at Anfield, but that has not been enough, given how much Liverpool fans expect from him. In addition to his Premier League and European experience, the Netherlands international can create something out of nothing and score all kinds of goals. Truly, he’d be an adequate replacement for Johnson, raising the Lilywhites’ quality and depth in the attacking unit.
That said, if Tottenham preserve their top-flight status, our bosses must try testing Liverpool’s resolve for Gakpo in the summer.
