The day is almost upon us: the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway at the Estadio Azteca tomorrow, when joint-host nation Mexico take on South Africa in a repeat of 2010 opening fixture. It’s set to be an enthralling 39 days of footballing action, as the expanded tournament sees a whopping 48 teams battle it out over a total of 104 matches to become world champions.

Argentina, France and Spain look to be the big favourites, with England aiming to go far despite fears they’ll melt in the searing heat of North America. Thomas Tuchel’s side are ranked number four in the world, but poor form heading into the tournament and a left-field squad selection has left fans feeling a touch pessimistic ahead of their opening fixture against Croatia next week.

Meanwhile, Premier League clubs are racing to get deals done ahead of the big kick-off, with many players set to fully focus on the tournament rather than look to engineer their next big move. Newcastle United have already brought in a hefty £70m for Anthony Gordon, while Spurs have signed both Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi for free.

We’ll kick off today’s transfer news at Old Trafford, where the failings of Manchester United’s past recruitment strategy have been brutally exposed once again. The Red Devils have released their end-of-season retained list, which also shows the players who have been released. Included among them is Jadon Sancho, who cost United £73m back in 2021.

The former Borussia Dortmund star endured a dismal spell at the club, failing to impress at Old Trafford, becoming isolated by past manager Erik ten Hag, and leaving the club on three separate loan spells with Aston Villa, Chelsea, and back at Dortmund. Once tipped as a generational talent, Sancho’s career is once again at a crossroads.

The 3AM Verdict: With Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia included, that’s £150m worth of investment United have seen no return on. It’s probably the best thing for Sancho, however, who at 26-years-old still has time to turn his career around. Where he goes next is anyone’s guess, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in Dortmund’s vibrant yellow shirt again, or indeed at Villa.

Newcastle United lead race for Serie A gem

Over to St. James’ Park next, where Newcastle’s recruitment will also be under serious scrutiny this summer. While they’ve not let a load of big-money signings leave on free transfers, they have struggled to find the right signings in recent window, with Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade among their recent big-money flops.

According to Italian outlet Messaggero Veneto, the Magpies are in “pole position” to sign Udinese midfielder Arthur Atta, who is said to be valued at around £35m by his club. The report suggests that Turkish giants Galatasaray are also in the mix, but Newcastle are keen to push through a move for Atta who could be an ideal replacement for Sandro Tonali.

It’s worth noting that the report mentions a strong pre-existing relationship between Galatasaray and Udinese, with the former soon to sell the latter ex-Aston Villa loanee Nicolo Zaniolo. It could well come down to where the player himself wishes to go, should both Newcastle and Galatasaray meeting the Serie A side’s asking price.

The 3AM Verdict: We get the feeling that Newcastle are ready to spend big this summer, having already taken strides towards signing a 20-year-old Ligue 2 goalkeeper for close to £20m. If Tonali does go, the Magpies will get a sizeable fee for him, and Atta looks like a good candidate to reinvest the funds in. He’s got the physicality necessary to thrive in the Premier League, and would slot into Eddie Howe’s all-action midfield with ease.

Tottenham enter race for Trafford

We’ll round things off in north London, where Tottenham are looking to put a bruising 2025/26 campaign behind them and brush that final day relegation escape firmly under the carpet. New manager Roberto De Zerbi is on a mission to get his strengthen his squad significantly, and a new goalkeeper looks set to be among his desired additions.

Team Talk report that Spurs are “primed” to make a move for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, who is said to be disillusioned at the Etihad Stadium after being replaced by Gianluigi Donnarumma as number one little over a month after making his £27m move from Burnley. The news comes amid claims Tottenham stopper Guglielmo Vicario is keen to leave the club and return to Italy.

The report notes that Aston Villa are likely to pose serious competition for Trafford, while the likes of Newcastle United and Leeds also hold serious interest in the England stopper, who is part of the Three Lions’ three-man goalkeeper contingent in North America for the World Cup, alongside starer Jordan Pickford and fellow backup option Dean Henderson.

The 3AM Verdict: This feels like a deal Spurs need to get done quickly. Tuchel has already said he’s open his players doing medicals while on World Cup duty, so it would be possible to get the deal done over the next few weeks. Trafford is a top class goalkeeper, and far too good to sit on the bench for another season. With Villa still unsure over Emi Martinez’s future, Spurs should make their move while they can.
