Tottenham Hotspur are ready to accept a bargain fee for Cristian Romero amid Atletico Madrid’s interest
Tottenham Hotspur could be set for some major changes in the summer, and they may lose some high-profile players after a woeful 2024/25 campaign.
Spurs are currently 14th in the Premier League, with Ange Postecoglou under huge pressure to keep his job beyond the end of the season. It has been a miserable season for the loyal supporters, especially, and the expectation will be that changes are made in the summer to ensure that next season is a much more positive one.
Unless the North Londoners go all the way in the Europa League and win it, they are set to miss out on Champions League football and this could lead to some key departures in the off-season.
Tottenham star Cristian Romero has been linked with an exit ahead of the summer transfer window. Real Madrid have held an interest in the South American star for some time now, but it is their cross-town rivals, Atletico Madrid, who are reportedly trying to lure him away from the North Londoners. Diego Simeone’s side have made him their top defensive target as the 26-year-old enters the final two years of his deal at the end of the campaign.
Once deemed untouchable, Spurs are now open to entertaining offers for Cristian Romero. It is understood that should the Argentine not accept a contract extension until the end of the season, the Hotspur Way chiefs will cash him in.
Now in a fresh update, an exclusive report from Football Insider claims that Tottenham could accept a £50m bid for Romero when the transfer window reopens in June. The 2022 World Cup winner was valued highly by the club in recent windows but his inconsistent form coupled with injury worries have seen them now ask a fee in the region of £50m.
Indeed, Romero has had an injury-ravaged season, limiting him to only 14 Premier League appearances. The central defender has recently returned to action with club and country, and has worn the captain’s armband for Tottenham in Premier League games against Bournemouth and Fulham.
The aforementioned report adds that the Cordoba-born star wants to play in the Champions League regularly and compete for trophies elsewhere if the North London outfit are unable to match his ambitions.
