Tottenham turned down transfer bids from Chelsea and Aston Villa for Lucas Bergvall during the January transfer window. The 20-year-old proved instrumental at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season under Ange Postecoglou and claimed the club's player of the year award after contributing to their Europa League triumph.

Under Thomas Frank, who left his role as manager earlier this week, Bergvall featured from the start in only 16 matches and has sometimes been deployed in wider positions. According to The Athletic, Chelsea and Villa are amongst the long-standing admirers of the Sweden international and established direct communication with Spurs last month.

The report suggests they explored a potential transfer, but Spurs are understood to have firmly rejected any departure. Villa allegedly made their approach after Spurs secured the signature of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid ahead of them.

Chelsea's pursuit came after their modest interest in Douglas Luiz, who made his return to Villa Park. Bergvall is now anticipated to attract attention in the summer at Spurs, particularly if they fail to qualify for European competition.

The midfielder arrived at the club in June 2024 from Djurgarden and penned a fresh contract merely 12 months afterwards. His existing deal extends until the summer of 2031.

Before his transfer to the Premier League, Barcelona tried to thwart Tottenham's bid to lure him to Spain. However, Bergvall chose to relocate to north London and he has been a steady performer under various managers.
