Tottenham Hotspur saw three points drop to one in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, as Thomas Frank’s struggles in front of a home crowd continue.
The former Brentford boss has struggled to find consistency since moving to North London but is expected to be backed with transfer funds during the window this month. That revelation came even before the club pocketed £35 million for the sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace.
While Johnson was somewhat of a bit-part player under Frank, the forward had picked up four goals and played 912 minutes for Spurs. With the London outfit struggling for attacking output, the need for incomings is evident.
RB Leipzig winger on Tottenham Hotspur ‘radar’
talkSPORT report that Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who is ‘on the radar’ of the club. The German outfit reportedly do not want to sell the 19-year-old in the middle of the season but it is a deal that a rival could look to broker.
Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also namechecked as interested parties. Any move this month would come with the added complication that Diomande is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations.
RB Leipzig are said to want £87 million for a sale midway through the season but clubs such as Spurs believe that a £52 million offer would be enough to sway the Bundesliga club. Diomande has registered seven goals and four assists in all competitions this season and only joined Leipzig from Leganes last summer.
Spurs see £8m defender bid rejected
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are clearly also looking to strengthen at the back with The Athletic reporting that Santos have rejected an £8 million bid from the club for left-back Souza.
The full-back is just 19 years old but could be an important signing for the club with Frank currently deploying the right-footed Djed Spence, who struggled against Brentford on New Year’s Day, in that position. Destiny Udogie is currently out injured.
However, Santos are said to believe in the potential of the youngster and are not wanting to engage in talks over a sale right now. Souza does have a release clause of around £87 million in his contract, only applicable to clubs overseas, which gives the Brazilian side a strong negotiating power.
Souza made 24 appearances for Santos in the league last season, helping the club avoid relegation, and is also capped at Brazil under-17 level.
