‘Really scary’ – Tottenham set for ‘massive’ player exodus

Tottenham Hotspur face massive changes to their squad to prepare for life in the Championship if they are relegated from the Premier League.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after it was revealed Spurs do have salary reduction clauses in player contracts.

The north London club face the prospect of relegation from the Premier League for the first time in their history, with Igor Tudor having lost his first two games in charge.

Tudor’s side sit just four points above the relegation zone, and Spurs would face financial challenges if they dropped into the second tier.

Tottenham must ‘rebuild their squad’ in the Championship

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states the Championship would be “very tough” for Spurs to get out of.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the club are “lucky” to have extra revenue streams to benefit from.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “You’re also going to have to rebuild your squad to do well in the Championship, because a lot of those Premiership players do not work in the Championship effectively given the heavy schedule and the type of football that’s played there.

“It’s a long battle. It’s a very, very tough season in the Championship and it takes a certain type of mindset and quality of player to get through it. So Spurs would have to reorganise, but they’re going to have to do it with a lower cost base.

“Certainly the parachute payments are only there really effectively for one or two seasons and that’s the only thing that makes a difference for you. They’re lucky they have got the other revenue streams coming from the stadium.

“Overall it’s a really scary proposition, and they will definitely need those massive player reductions to be able to keep the cost base and put together a competitive squad.”

Igor Tudor facing Tottenham pressure

Sources have told Football Insider that Tudor could leave Spurs before the end of the season if their poor run of form continues.

Performances have yet to improve alongside results in his first two games in charge, whilst Tudors’ comments in press conferences have also been concerning.

The club want to bring Mauricio Pochettino back to north London, but their managerial search in the summer will depend on whether they remain in the Premier League.
