Ben Davies might stay at Tottenham for another year as club trigger one-year extension

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has finally managed to win his first major trophy at N17 this season. The Welshman is the longest serving player in the squad for the Lilywhites and has been a consistent performer for the North London club throughout the years. The centre-back has been through all the ups and downs at Hotspur Way and he also came close to lifting the Champions League in 2019.

However, after a series of near misses during his time at Spurs, the 32-year-old won his first silverware with the club after they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final this season. The Welshman has also played a crucial part for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season after many key defenders were injured midway through the campaign.

As per Sofascore, Davies racked up 28 appearances in all competitions this season for Big Ange’s side. It is also fair to say that the ex-Swansea City star did more than okay while featuring for the Lilywhites and was one of the very few players who performed consistently for the side in what has been a disastrous domestic campaign.

Tottenham have endured a tough domestic campaign under Ange Postecoglou. The Lilywhites have been forced to adopt the ‘sell-to-buy’ policy in the summer due to the poor league position. Amidst all the celebrations of the Europa League success, it is important for the club’s hierarchy to not get complacent in the summer. A major squad overhaul is needed and the club needs to cash in on underperforming players immediately.

As per Mail Online, Tottenham are set to trigger the one-year extension in Ben Davies’s contract in the coming days. The Lilywhites value the defender’s experience and believe the 32-year-old still has something to offer for Ange Postecoglou’s side next season. Daniel Levy is also aware of the fact that Spurs might need defensive depth next season as Ange’s men would compete in Europe as well.

The aforementioned report also states that Leeds United are also interested in Davies’ services and want to bring the defender to Elland Road in the summer. Daniel Farke’s side managed to achieve automatic promotion to the Premier League this season. And they are looking to sign the Spurs centre-back to boost their defensive ranks to achieve their goal of surviving Premier League relegation next year.

It is fair to say that the decision to extend Ben Davies’ contract at N17 is certainly questionable. The Wales international has nothing left to give and he has also failed to make the centre-back spot his own under several managers at the club. Keeping the 32-year-old at Hotspur Way would mean that someone else with more potential and higher ceiling would have to make way in the summer.

But it can also be said that the Ben Davies’ experience will matter a lot heading into next season as Ange Postecoglou’s men will be competing on four different fronts. The Spurs No.33 is known for supporting young players and has a big say in the dressing room. So, losing the ex-Swansea defender would be a risky move as the Lilywhites would lose out on an extra defender next season.
