Tottenham are looking to raid the Serie A market to address their creativity issue.
Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer picture looks much brighter heading into the summer transfer window after beating the drop on the final day of the past season.
The North Londoners have started rebuilding their squad under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. Liverpool star Andy Robertson has agreed to join De Zerbi’s squad once his contract expires next month. Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi is also on the verge of joining Spurs on a free transfer. The potential arrivals of Robertson and Senesi will strengthen their defensive ranks, which leaked goals at an alarming rate during the 2025/26 season.
Next on the agenda appears to be addressing the team’s creativity problem. The long-term injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski had a huge impact on Tottenham’s creativity. Last summer’s marquee signing, Xavi Simons, failed to deliver the goods and, unfortunately, sustained an ACL rupture in April.
Keeping that in mind, Tottenham would do well to bring in creative players to improve the quality of their attacking department, and it looks like they have set their sights on raiding Napoli.
Tottenham eye move for Napoli midfielder Antonio Vergara
According to a report from Corriere del Mezzogiorno (h/t Tutto Napoli), Tottenham are interested in signing Napoli midfielder Antonio Vergara. They have been closely monitoring the 23-year-old’s performances in recent months.
Considered one of the most promising prospects in the Italian circuit, Antonio Vergara enjoyed his breakout season in Naples, registering three goals and four assists in 19 appearances in all competitions. Despite missing close to two months with a plantar fascia issue in the second half of the past campaign, the Italian managed to make enough of an impact to catch the eye of the Spurs bosses.
Vergara still has four years remaining on his contract, so Napoli remains in a commanding position if it comes down to negotiations. The 2024/25 Serie A champions could demand a sizeable fee for their academy talent after his breakthrough season in the senior squad. De Zerbi has followed the creative midfielder’s progress over the last year and has now decided to make his move to bring him to Tottenham.
Spurs need players with upside, not just safe signings. Vergara has the raw ability to become a star if he gets regular minutes and proper coaching. Under De Zerbi, the former Italian under-19 international can fulfil his potential and help address a key issue in Tottenham’s midfield. The Napoli starlet would bring creativity, flair, movement and versatility, which is exactly the sort of thing De Zerbi usually likes in No.10s.
To enhance the squad’s attacking depth, Tottenham must test Napoli’s resolve with a cheeky bid for Vergara.
