Tottenham have announced the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

Tel originally joined Spurs on loan on February from Bundesliga Champions Bayern until the end of the season. The Frenchman has now signed a six-year-contract until 2031 when his current loan deal expires on 30 June.

The 20-year-old is currently with the France squad at the European Under-21 Championship alongside current club teammate Wilson Odobert. He made 20 appearances for Spurs last season, scoring three goals, and was an unused substitute for their victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Spurs have agreed to pay £30 million for Tel, having already paid an £8.5 million loan fee, and he becomes the first signing made by the north Londoners since Thomas Frank was announced as manager earlier this week.

Tel moved to Bayern from Stade Rennes at the age of 17 ahead of the 2022/23 season. He made 83 appearances in all competitions for the German side, scoring 16 goals and winning two Bundesliga titles.

After the announcement, Bayern board member Max Eberl said: “Mathys Tel came to FC Bayern as a very young player and mastered his first steps at the top level of European football here. He was a popular figure in the squad, who always gave his all for the club and the team.

“The move to Tottenham has turned out to be the right one for his development. He’ll now continue this journey with Spurs. We thank him for his commitment in the FC Bayern shirt and wish him all the best for his future. Merci, Mathys!”

After confirming Tel, the Mail report Frank is understood to want Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo to join him at Spurs.

Frank signed Mbeumo for Brentford from French Ligue 2 side Troyes in 2019 and the 25-year-old has scored 70 goals in 242 games for the Bees — including 20 in the Premier League last season.
