Tottenham were ripped to shreds by angry England fans for a social media post made just minutes after Wednesday’s World Cup semi–final. The Three Lions had taken the lead early in the second half to put them on the brink of a first World Cup final since 1966.

However, a late collapse from Thomas Tuchel’s side saw them ship two goals inside seven minutes as Argentina turned the game on its head. It left England reeling and once again asking “what could’ve been” as they missed out on a place in the World Cup final.

The reaction to the result has sparked plenty of controversy, with some Argentina players risking the wrath of FIFA after displaying a Falkland Islands-related banner. But closer to home, Tottenham are among the clubs coming under fire for congratulating their Argentine players on reaching the final.

It’s a move that riled England fans, with many responding to criticise the Premier League side for the post. @robbyyy replied on X: “Admin, you need to remember you’re English. The club is English. It’s owned and operated by English. Sick of this.”

@WestHam_Central wrote: “Of course you'd celebrate it weird club.”

@jwayball kept it simple with: “Get in the bin.”

While @BluePompey67975 added: “Sometimes its better to say nothing.”

It comes after England fans had fumed over a similar post made by Liverpool in the build-up to the match, which wished Alexis Mac Allister good luck in the semi-final. Meanwhile, Chelsea had posted a congratulatory message for Enzo Fernandez, but deleted it following the backlash.

Elsewhere, Romero was involved in a back-and-forth with Gary Neville, after the ex-Manchester United ace called him and his defensive partner Lisandro Martinez “the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world".

Commenting after booking a spot in back-to-back World Cup finals, he told DSports: "The only thing that I hope for is that when I retire, I am not that stupid. Hopefully, I won't criticise a player or anyone.

"Because at the end of the day, we are doing our best for our national team. Sometimes it goes right for us, sometimes badly, but we are just happy to be in a World Cup final again. I think we are making history, for us it is something really huge, and we feel the significance of this shirt like no one else."
