One Tottenham star appears to have caused some trouble on social media, and it’s not Cristian Romero. Romero has made headlines more than once this season for his social media posts, regularly criticising the way the club is run, but he has stayed out of trouble this week.
The same can’t be said of Xavi Simons, who has upset some of his old fans from RB Leipzig with his use of social media over the weekend.
Saturday saw Simons’ old club RB Leipzig come mightily close to beating Borussia Dortmund only to concede an equaliser five minutes into stoppage time. Fabio Silva scored the goal, and he celebrated it on Instagram after the game with the caption “Until the last minute.”
Simons, who is friends with Silva from his PSV days, liked the post and commentated “brindemos”, which is Portuguese for “let’s raise a toast”.
Of course, Simons was just celebrating his friend’s success, but in doing so, he has appeared to rub salt in the wounds of his former club, who were the victims of that late goal. Fans soon spotted the comment and spread it around social media, leading to reactions from many.
Bild then ran a story detailing the story and the reaction to Simons’ social media activity. No longer a Leipzig player, the Dutchman doesn’t have to worry too much about fans there being upset, and when it comes down to it, he can have faith that reasonable-minded fans will know it was a case of him supporting his friend and that it had nothing to do with Leipzig being on the receiving end of the scoreline.
Simons regularly said that he felt ‘at home’ at Leipzig and that he enjoyed his time there, so he is not going to hold ill-will towards the club, and even if he did, it’s unlikely he would be so petty as to express it through social media comments.
