Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero may have played his final game for the club with Ange Postecoglou confirming that the centre-back will not be in the squad to take on Brighton this weekend.
Ange Postecoglou and his side got their hands on the Europa League trophy this week and parties have followed, but the season is not quite over yet for Spurs. The final round of Premier League fixtures takes place on Sunday and Tottenham Hotspur host Brighton.
There’s nothing riding on that match for the London outfit, who sit 17th in the division. Brighton, however, will be keen to get a result and keep Brentford below them with the slim chance of Europa Conference League football being handed to eighth place.
Ange Postecoglou provides Tottenham Hotspur injury update
Brighton will be confident of getting points against a Spurs team who have spent time since the win in Bilbao celebrating rather than training. When asked about his team selection for the weekend, Postecoglou said: “We'll field a team. As I've got older, I used to be different, I think you need to celebrate your achievements properly. That was my message to the boys. Important for them as they've achieved, important for those around them and important to make experiences as memorable as possible.
“There will be a couple of absences. Romero has been struggling with his toe for quite a while so we'll leave him out and probably Sonny because his foot has still not healed. They've both sort of made a massive effort to get to the final. Bissouma got a knock in the game and he's kind of 50/50 at the moment. The rest of them, physically anyway, are ok.”
Having fretted about injury news all season, those blows will now not worry Tottenham Hotspur supporters but news that Romero will be absent is significant. The 27-year-old has been a mainstay in the starting XI when fit this season but has been linked with a move away from the club.
Cristian Romero teases La Liga transfer
The Sun last week claimed that Real Madrid are weighing up a move for the Argentine. Romero could partner Trent Alexander-Arnold in a new look back four at the Bernabeu under incoming boss Xabi Alonso.
Atletico Madrid have also been linked with the player. Spanish journalist Rubén Uría has claimed in recent weeks that Romero has given the green light to a five-year contract offer from the Spanish outfit with the player himself explicitly outlining his desire to play in La Liga. Shortly after the Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest, quotes shared with Argentine journalist Gastón Edul on his TV show 'Los Edu' started to circulate.
Romero said: “I’d love to play La Liga. I’d love to, honestly. It depends on a lot of things. We’ll see after the [English] championship is over. The truth is, I haven’t spoken to my agent yet, but I’m open to anything. My goal is always to grow and go to new places to continue developing.
“Above all else, I try to take one day at a time. There are two months left until the end of the season and I’m always thinking about performing at my best. We’re in the Europa League semi-finals. It’s an important step for the club which hasn’t reached this stage for so many years. I’d like to win it.”
