Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be planning a late push to sign six-time England international Morgan Rogers after a dramatic twist at Aston Villa.
The Lillywhites have strengthened their attacking options with the signings of Mohamed Kudus from West Ham on the right-wing and Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich in the striking department, but they are still yet to sign a central attacking midfielder after missing out on a deal for Nottingham Forest gem Morgan Gibbs-White despite meeting the 25-year-old’s £60m release clause earlier in the window.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis issued a legal complaint over what they deemed to an illegal move from Tottenham at the time before ultimately convincing Gibbs-White to sign a fresh one-year extension at the City Ground ahead of the club’s Europa League campaign.Tottenham’s problems in this area have since been further amplified by James Maddison’s ACL injury in pre-season which is expected to rule him out for the majority of the campaign.
Tottenham plot late swoop for Morgan Rogers
Football Insider understands that Tottenham are planning a late push to sign Morgan Rogers before the end of the summer window.
Rogers only joined Aston Villa 18 months ago from Middlesbrough in a deal worth £15m but is now widely believed to be on the most valuable players in Unai Emery’s team after a terrific breakout campaign which saw him score 14 times in 54 matches across all competitions while also claiming 13 assists.
Villa have maintained a strong stance that Rodgers is not for sale despite their difficulties with Profit and Sustainability this summer. However, it’s now claimed that this stance may well have changed as Unai Emery aims to use any funds generated from Rogers’ departure to enhance his squad’s overall squad depth. The report says that Tottenham are hoping to take advantage of the Midlands club’s financial problems and strike a deal for Rogers.
What would Morgan Rogers bring to Tottenham?
Morgan Rogers is a versatile attacking midfielder with the ability to play out-wide on the right or in the NO.10 role as a central playmaker. He’s blessed with excellent pace, tenacity, good work rate and a tremendous eye for goal. Rogers is 23-years-old and approaching what’s likely to be the peak years of his professional career. Rogers has already become an England international but will hope that another solid season will leave him in contention to be a starter at North America next summer.
The former Middlesbrough man is also Champions League proven with four goals and two assists from 12 appearances in the competition last year as the West Midlands club made it all the way to the quarter-finals. Rogers became the first player in Champions League history to score two goals in the opening five minutes of a match before finishing off his hat-trick in stoppage time against Celtic during last year’s competition.
The midfielder has the potential to make a huge difference for Tottenham but is likely to cost them a significant amount, with The Independent claiming Villa will only listen to offers in the region of around £80m.
