Tottenham Hotspur have allegedly opened talks over a late deal for Atalanta BC's Ademola Lookman following the collapse of his proposed move to another European giant.
The Lilywhites paraded new signing Xavi Simons around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium turf before their clash with Bournemouth on Saturday, but the mood was quickly soured as the Cherries deservedly beat Spurs 1-0 in North London.
Thomas Frank's side did not have a single shot on target until the 68th minute of the match, as the formerly dangerous trio of Richarlison, Brennan Johnson and Mohammed Kudus were nullified.
To make matters worse, record signing Dominic Solanke missed the defeat to his former club due to an ankle injury, although there is optimism that he will return following the September international break
Simons will add a new dimension to the Spurs attack in a couple of weeks' time too, but Frank remains without Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison for a long while owing to their respective knee injuries.
Tottenham 'open talks' for Lookman as asking price revealed
Frank's side remain in the market for late attacking additions and pushed hard for Manchester City's Savinho earlier in the summer, but the Sky Blues have refused to entertain offers while they have been unable to secure a replacement.
However, Tottenham have supposedly sourced an ideal alternative, as TBR Football claims that talks have now begun over a deal for Lookman, who has become the Lilywhites' 'priority target' before Monday's 7pm transfer deadline.
The Nigeria international is pining for a move away from La Dea and has been offered to Tottenham alongside several other clubs, and he would welcome the chance to join the Europa League winners in the coming hours.
Lookman is supposedly prepared to fly to London imminently to complete a possible switch to Spurs, who will have to pay £43m to bring the former Fulham and Leicester City, Everton and Charlton Athletic attacker back to England.
Alternatively, Atalanta are supposedly willing to consider a loan with an obligation for a permanent deal in 2026, by which time Lookman will only have one year left to run on his contract with the Serie A side.
The Lookman transfer saga explained amid Tottenham links
After underwhelming spells in England and Germany, Lookman blossomed under Gian Piero Gasperini in the Atalanta attack and now boasts 52 goals and 25 assists in 118 appearances for La Dea across all competitions.
Following three productive seasons in Bergamo, Lookman feels that this summer is the right time to explore a new adventure away from the Gewiss Stadium, and a move to Inter Milan appeared to be on the cards earlier in the window.
However, Atalanta rejected an opening proposal from the Nerazzurri that Lookman felt was fair, leading the attacker to express his frustration at "months of broken promises" from his current club in a heartfelt Instagram statement.
There is now seemingly no way back for the 27-year-old in Bergamo, but Inter Milan have dropped their interest, instead signing Luis Henrique and Ange-Yoan Bonny from Marseille and Parma respectively.
Now, Lookman's camp are desperately searching for new destinations for the Nigeria international, who faces a few months out in the cold if he cannot secure an exit before Monday's deadline.
