Tottenham have offered Mikey Moore a new contract and negotiations have begun over the final deal, football.london understands.
The 17-year-old attacker is one of the brightest talents in Spurs' academy and really made his breakthrough last season under Ange Postecoglou, with 19 appearances around a period of illness late last year, including 10 in the Premier League with three of those starts.
Moore, who can play on either wing or in a central attacking midfield role, played his part in Tottenham's run to the Europa League trophy, starting three games and coming off the bench in another two.
He scored his first goal for the club with an excellent individual effort to put the seal on the 3-0 win against Elfsborg in the group stages and it was his performance against AZ Alkmaar earlier in the same stage of the competition that really got everyone talking.
Spurs midfielder James Maddison told TNT Sports after that game: "From minute 45 to 65 I thought we had Neymar on the left wing. He was brilliant. Just demanding the ball and fearless. [He has] that young, fearless mentality and you never want to take that away from him. He’s a young kid, a brilliant lad, a lovely boy.
"He takes in information, and he’s got bags of ability, so I’ll be there as an older player, hopefully with some wise words to help along the way. He’s got all the ability. It’s just about knuckling down and working hard, which he does to be fair to him."
Spurs boss Postecoglou said of the player: "It’s exciting. Every challenge we throw at him he thrives on. He’s a great kid and working hard every day. It's exciting for us and the football club."
Now football.london understands Spurs have offered Moore, who was at the European Under-19s Championships with England this month, a new contract to replace his current deal until 2027 ahead of his 18th birthday in August, which has kickstarted negotiations between all parties.
There is plenty of interest in Moore both in terms of a loan for next season from clubs in England and across Europe and also clubs lurking for something more permanent down the line in case a deal cannot be agreed, with Juventus among those linked in recent weeks. Tottenham are expected to ensure that is not the case with a long-term contract.
New head coach Thomas Frank will decide what happens next season for Moore and whether he gets a loan move to get him regular football, but Tottenham's lack of homegrown players could dash any such thoughts with the teenager able to be used in both the Premier League and Champions League without taking up a squad place due to his academy status.
One thing is clear, though, and that is that Spurs want Moore to remain and become the talent they expect him to in the years ahead.
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min told football.london about Moore last season: "He's a fantastic boy and obviously he's coming from the academy. You as a club, you look after him even more. Everybody is so welcoming and looking after him, so do I, because he's such a lovely kid and working hard every single day, coming with the first team with that age it's not easy, you know, like sometimes you're very shy.
"But he's showing good personality and working hard, which is very important to me. When you see the young players are working hard in the first team and you just want to help, you just want to help him. When I was young, and now he's coaching at Manchester United, Ruud van Nistelrooy, he was helping me a lot in my Hamburg time.
"Now I want to be that guy as well, you know, just having him around me and just talking about things, because we are playing in a similar position that if I can help him a little bit with advice, then I'm always open to it.
"Mikey is also coming to me most of the times and asking questions, which is very fun. I enjoy talking to him. He's a fantastic boy and then I'm definitely sure that he can be a fantastic player. There's no doubt because he has such amazing quality.
"As we always say about young players, let's don't give him too much pressure on his shoulders. Just let's enjoy how he develops, how he improves every single day, every single season and as a fan, as supporters, we should just enjoy watching him and he will be, I think, one of the top players."
