TOTTENHAM 1-1 LEEDS: Dominic Calvert-Lewin's penalty ensured that Roberto De Zerbi is still looking nervously over his shoulder after Mathys Tel went from hero to zero

Just when you thought Tottenham were beginning to look safe, they pressed the self-destruct button.

Tottenham forward Mathys Tel played hero and villain as he scored a sensational opener and then conceded a crazy penalty which means they are still firmly in danger.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin smashed home an equaliser from the penalty spot after Tel’s reckless challenge on Ethan Ampadu to bring the nerves back among the home fans.

Tottenham and West Ham have got two games left each, only two points separate them and this scrap for survival is still not over. Incredibly, Tottenham have yet to win at home in the Premier League in this calendar year and you fear for the home fans if they need a win against Everton here on the final day.

West Ham have to go to Newcastle on Saturday but they know a win would take them above Tottenham and suddenly Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have been given a lifeline.

West Ham face Leeds on the final day while Tottenham have got Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and then that meeting with Everton. Imagine that. Everton boss David Moyes coming to West Ham’s rescue one more time - and suddenly it does not look quite so difficult.

And that is because Tottenham’s back-to-back wins over Wolves and Aston Villa pulled them out of the relegation zone but have definitely not cured all their ills.

This game was there for them but their home form is the root of all evil because they have still yet to win in their own stadium in this calendar year. That is a staggering stat and yet no-one can question the home fans because they were brilliant and supportive all night.

They could sense the opportunity after Arsenal did Tottenham and Leeds a huge favour by winning at West Ham 24 hours earlier. That guaranteed Leeds’ safety and also gave Tottenham the chance to put daylight between themselves and West Ham to go four points above their London rivals with only two games left.

Tottenham had lots of first half pressure but actually it was Leeds who had the best chance in the first half as Joe Rodon’s header forced a brilliant save from Spurs keeper Antonin Kinsky.

The home side then got the breakthrough. A corner was not cleared, it fell to Tel who had time to steady himself, control it and then curl a stunning shot into the top corner. What a goal. Tottenham could have made it 2-0 but Richarlison missed a big chance at the near post and how they were made to pay.

It was Tel’s crazy high challenge on Ampadu and referee Jarred Gillett gave a penalty after a lengthy penalty check. Calvert-Lewin smashed home to send the Leeds fans wild. What a weekend they have had.

Then it was Leeds who nearly nicked it. Leeds substitute Sean Longstaff raced through in injury time and his shot was pushed onto the underside of the crossbar by Kinsky. That was a huge moment.

James Maddison came on for Spurs and looked bright after such a long lay-off and screamed for a penalty but a VAR check showed Lukas Nmecha got a touch on the ball.

That was a let-off for Leeds but it is Tottenham now who are still looking nervously over their shoulder and they will know they cannot count on a final day showdown with Everton. Sadly, Tottenham’s biggest lows this season have been at home - and they still have a fight to survive.
