‘This’ defender’s transfer is expected to go through on July 1 as Tottenham secured Premier League survival.
Following Tottenham‘s survival, the transfer of Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi now set to be completed on July 1 when the transfer window officially opens, according to Spurs Daily.
The Argentine international’s move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium had been contingent on the club securing Premier League survival, a condition that was emphatically met on Sunday when Roberto De Zerbi’s side beat Everton to confirm their top-flight status for another season. With that obstacle removed, the deal can now proceed as planned.
Senesi arrives on a free transfer after confirming his departure from Bournemouth at the end of his contract, making him one of the most financially astute pieces of business Tottenham could have completed, given the quality and experience he brings.
The 29-year-old spent four years at the Vitality Stadium, establishing himself as one of the more reliable and technically accomplished defenders in the Premier League before losing his starting position to Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi, both of whom have since departed for Real Madrid and PSG, respectively, allowing Senesi to reclaim his prominence in the final stretch of the season.
Senesi aside, Tottenham will execute a rebuild
For De Zerbi, who spoke emphatically after the Everton victory about the need to complete the squad with first-level players, a free transfer centre-back with Premier League experience and international pedigree represents exactly the kind of low-risk, high-value addition the rebuild requires. Senesi’s arrival will also help address the defensive uncertainty created by doubts over the futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, both of whom have been linked with summer exits.
The rebuild De Zerbi promised has begun. Senesi is the first piece of the puzzle, and July 1 cannot come quickly enough.
