Tottenham transfer news: Gray to Tyneside? Spurs block huge Newcastle transfer move

Tottenham transfer news: Newcastle United have thrown a massive cat among the transfer window pigeons. Reports coming straight from Fabrizio Romano on 1 July 2026 confirm that Johan Lange has already slammed the door on the Magpies’ opening gambit for Archie Gray. The North Londoners rejected the initial approach out of hand.

But Tyneside aren’t backing down. Far from it.

Eddie Howe’s recruitment team still have an enormous appetite for the 20-year-old midfielder. Right now, Tottenham are digging their heels in, briefing that they won’t even look at an offer unless someone turns up with astronomical money. After finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League last May, Newcastle desperately need elite blood. They want Gray.

Midfield reshuffle sparks North-South bidding war

Money talks, though. The former Leeds starlet saw his valuation peak at a staggering €72.5 million not too long ago, though current industry estimates put his actual market price closer to €58.2 million. Newcastle want a high-energy engine room operator, especially with Europe’s elite continuously sniffing around Bruno Guimarães.

Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi used the England Under-21 international sparingly last term. Gray only got nine minutes of action in the final-day clash with Everton, yet his season stats tell a different story. He clocked up 32 total appearances across all competitions, including 24 Premier League outings where he made 18 starts and racked up 1,479 minutes on the pitch. Along the way, the midfielder chipped in with two goals and three assists in domestic and European fixtures, whilst putting in a shift defensively with 133 total interventions across the campaign.

Even with limited minutes, a 83.1% pass accuracy rating shows the kid has composure well beyond his years. Howe thinks he can mould Gray into a senior international superstar. Spurs just splashed out £85 million on Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, so competition in the capital is only going to get meaner. Rumours are already swirling that both clubs might try to negotiate a wider deal involving Sandro Tonali moving the other way to grease the wheels. It depends entirely on whether Newcastle can find the cash to test Tottenham’s resolve a second time.
