(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump is set to pardon billionaire Joe Lewis, whose family owns a majority stake in the London-based Tottenham Hotspur soccer club.

In 2024, Lewis, 88, pled guilty to insider trading and was fined $5 million by a New York judge. He wasn’t sentenced to prison but was given three years of probation.

The decision to issue the presidential pardon was influenced by his age and the fact that he didn’t personally profit from the insider trading, as reported by The Athletic.

The pardon will allow Lewis to enter the United States for the first time since his sentencing. Lewis requested the pardon to receive medical treatment and visit his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the U.S.

“I am pleased all of this is now behind me, and I can enjoy retirement and watch as my family and extended family continue to build our businesses based on the quality and pursuit of excellence that has become our trademark,” Lewis said in a statement.

Lewis hasn’t been heavily involved with Tottenham since 2022, the year he transferred his majority ownership in the club to his family through a trust.
