The European Under-19 Championships are over for Mikey Moore and Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny after England were eliminated in the last match of the group stage on Friday night.

A 4-2 defeat to the Netherlands in Romania, coupled with Germany’s late win over Norway, sent the Young Lions home.

England, who drew 2-2 with Norway and 5-5 with Germany in their opening two matches, would have qualified for the knockout stages if the latter nations had drawn on Friday, but Germany’s stoppage-time winner sent them through in second place, while the Netherlands topped the group.

Central midfielder Reiss played the full 90 minutes against the Dutch – his second start of the tournament after scoring against Germany – and saw a late effort saved when the score was 4-1.

Attacking midfielder Mikey was forced off injured in the latter stages of England’s opener against Norway just after scoring a penalty to make it 2-2. He missed out on the Germany clash but was named as an unused substitute against the Dutch.

Germany play Spain and the Netherlands face hosts Romania in the semi-finals.
