Wayne Rooney has said it would be an ‘absolute disaster’ if Tottenham Hotspur were relegated to the Championship. The London outfit are fighting for their lives with seven fixtures left to play before the end of the season. They are one point above the drop zone in 17th position.
Spurs sit just above West Ham in 18th, with Burnley and Wolves making up the rest of the bottom three. They were beaten 3-0 at home by Nottingham Forest last time out. Next up is a clash away at Sunderland after the international break.
Wayne Rooney delivers verdict on Tottenham Hotspur
Ex-Manchester United and England favourite Rooney has had his say on Spurs on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show: "Getting positive results against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, it felt like they were getting back on track - then to play the team you're fighting against relegation at home and lose 3-0 is an absolute nightmare.
"Obviously, West Ham losing helps them a little bit, but it couldn't have been a worse day for Tottenham. You think only a few years ago they were in the Champions League final and won the Europa League last season. To be on the brink of getting relegated is an absolute disaster. I can't believe they're down there, to be honest."
He added: "One win changes everything. One win brings Leeds and Forest back into it. [Of Spurs' remaining opponents] they could beat any of them on their day. I think the big thing is confidence. We've seen in the last week, they get a point at Anfield and then beat Atletico. A lot is on confidence and belief, not just from the players, but from the fans as well, and that just seems to be as low as it can get at the minute."
Spurs turned to Thomas Frank as their head coach last summer. Prior to his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he caught the eye at Brentford. However, he struggled for results and was subsequently sacked.
Igor Tudor was then named as their manager on a short-term basis. The former Juventus man hasn’t been able to inspire his players to an upturn in form. As a result, he is now starting to feel some intense pressure regarding his own position.
Wolves and Burnley look gone and it is between Spurs, West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United for the final relegation position. Tudor’s men need to show a response against Sunderland in their next match. Their upcoming opponents will be feeling confident though after their victory against rivals Newcastle United.
