Daniel Levy is making a strong play to keep Cristian Romero at Tottenham Hotspur beyond this summer’s transfer window.

Romero has been linked with a transfer to Atletico Madrid, and the Spanish giants are expected to make a big push to land him this summer.

But Daniel Levy is likely to make things very tricky for the Colchoneros to get one of Diego Simeone’s top targets and here’s how.

Cristian Romero could be priced out of Tottenham departure

Cristian Romero could be priced out of a move away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to Alasdair Gold.

At this stage, the Spurs journalist struggles to see which club will pay what would be required to prise the Argentine defender away from N17.

Simeone has been frequently contacting Romero about making the switch to Atletico Madrid, however, the Spanish club will need to pay up.

Romero proved his importance to Spurs as he won the Man of the Match award for his display against Manchester United.

Gold told Football.London: “With Romero, I remain to be convinced that any club will pay the sort of money required to prise him away from Tottenham. We’ll see.”

TBR Football understands that Levy is offering Romero a new contract, but the 27-year-old does seem to have his heart set on leaving.

But, the issue which he could face is that the Tottenham chairman may well stand firm over his asking price for his vice captain, which could prove tricky for Atletico to match.

Thomas Frank loves Cristian Romero

Thomas Frank is the man who will be tasked with trying to change Romero’s mind about leaving this summer and to get him back on side.

Romero was unhappy about Ange Postecoglou’s sacking and made that clear by posting his farewell message right after the new Danish head coach was announced.

Frank thinks Romero will be ‘crucial’ for his Spurs team next season, and he will be hopeful that the defender can yet be convinced to stay.

The World Cup winner’s departure would be a major blow, not only because of his brilliant defensive abilities, but also due to his importance in Spurs’ build-up play. There aren’t many better defenders on the ball than Romero.

Tottenham think they already have Cristian Romero’s replacement

But, if the defender were to leave, TBR Football sources can reveal that Tottenham believe Kevin Danso could replace Romero.

Tottenham just signed Danso permanently for £21 million in what could prove to be one of the best value signings of the summer.

The Austrian defender was excellent in the Europa League final as he came on to form a back three in the final stages of the match.

He stepped up during Romero’s injury last term and now he could do the same again next season if the defender does leave the North London club.
