Tottenham Hotspur isn't even playing football matches right now, but they've gotten some bad news this weekend.

As 20-year old midfielder Lucas Bergvall plays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for Sweden, he has also made it clear he wants to leave Spurs.

The Athletic reported Sunday on Bergvall's preference to leave the club.

It's tough news for Tottenham, which picked up Bergvall from Djurgarden in 2024 and has watched him quickly develop into a key piece.

Why does Lucas Bergvall want to leave Tottenham?

Bergvall is looking for a new opportunity.

It's "his preference to seek a new challenge elsewhere, with strong interest in the midfielder from sides in England and across Europe," writes David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Reports have circulated on this possibility for months.

Tottenham has certainly benefited from Bergvall, who was their player of the season in 2024-25 under Ange Postecoglu as they went on to win the Europa League.

Bergvall played less in this most recent season, and the constant shakeup at Spurs may have contributed to his discontent.

Tottenham is also pursuing new midfielders, so Bergvall may have seen the writing on the wall of a tough uphill climb to come for consistent playing time.

Still, it's tough for Tottenham to lose a player of Bergvall's talent and youth.
