Wilson snatches later winner as Hammers pile misery on Frank

Wilson, who replaced January signing Taty Castellanos in the 90th minute, snuck in to smash the ball into the roof of the net, leaving Frank and his Spurs players in a state of dejection.

Preceded by a frantic beginning to an otherwise underwhelming opening few minutes, January addition Spurs Conor Gallagher’s return to the Premier League came with an aerial clash with West Ham’s Pablo. Both players received treatment for head injuries, but were then swiftly back to their feet

It was a typically unimpressive start from both sides. Spurs forward Mathys Tel was presented with a wonderful opportunity to open the scoring after Konstantinos Mavropanos’ error saw the ball deflect back to Xavi Simons, who scuffed his attempted effort towards goal.

The ball somehow then landed at the feet of Tel, who got his judgment all wrong and volleyed well over from just yards out.

West Ham then had the ball in the net, with the away fans roaring out in a cheer, before hearing the ironic jeers of the Spurs home support as Jarrod Bowen was adjudged to have fouled Micky Van de Ven before Crysencio Summerville tapped into an empty net.

Spurs’ home form has, for the second season running, been brought into question this season, and two wins from their last ten in the Premier League have seen considerable pressure mount on Thomas Frank.

Like many other home fixtures this season, Spurs inevitably went behind early on.

Crysencio Summerville was allowed time and space on the edge of the Tottenham box to turn away from both Pedro Porro and Conor Gallagher before unleashing an effort towards goal and past Vicario to give the Hammers the lead. Replays showed a considerable deflection off Micky Van de Ven, who directed the ball beyond the helpless Italian, who could only stand and watch his team go behind.

In fairness to Frank’s side, their heads didn’t drop. The lively figure of Mathys Tel was once again among the thick of the action as he looked to get Spurs back level. After 28 minutes played, the former Bayern Munich forward picked up the ball on the left-hand touchline before driving towards the West Ham box and hitting a sweet strike just wide of goal.

The visitors then had the ball in the Spurs net for a third time as Jarrod Bowen reacted quickly enough to prod home from close range after a goalmouth scramble, but the VAR ruled that the England forward was clearly standing in an offside position to spare Thomas Frank’s blushes.

The start of the second half showed the hosts in a better light as they looked to gather some momentum and pile the pressure on the West Ham block.

Hammers forward Jarrod Bowen was booked for a late challenge on Xavi Simons following a topsy-turvy sequence of events, but produced nothing from the resulting free-kick as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were able to regain their shape and clear the danger.

Thomas Frank’s decision to replace Mathys Tel with Dominic Solanke was met with loud boos – not the first time the Dane has been on the receiving end of unwanted jeers from his own fans this season.

But the hosts managed to restore parity after 64 minutes through Cristian Romero’s thumping header. Pedro Porro latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the West Ham box prior to producing an excellent cross to find the Argentine, who powered a header into the top corner to draw Frank’s side level.

Espirito Santo responded by instructing his side to push further up the pitch and land further blows on the hosts. Taty Castellanos nearly put the Hammers back in the lead with an acrobatic effort, although the January signing was disappointed to see the ball fly wide.

As both sides pushed for a late winner, the game quickly turned into a basketball-like contest.

Tottenham fans let out a collective roar in protest of what they thought should have been a penalty as Jean-Clair Todibo appeared to push Xavi Simons inside the West Ham box.

The VAR then once again intervened to review whether Ollie Scarles had touched the ball with his hand as he tried to chase down Conor Gallagher’s deep run into the visitors’ penalty area, but referee Jarred Gillett signalled for the match to resume after Scarles was deemed not to have committed an offence.

In the 93rd minute of added time, West Ham remarkably found a winner.

Vicario failed to deal with the initial inswinging corner before a goalmouth scramble saw Hammers substitute Callum Wilson find space at the back post to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.

Unsurprisingly, the Spurs fans directed relentless boos towards Frank and his players, bellowing, “You’re getting sacked in the morning,” at the Dane.

Jarred Gillet then blew his whistle for full-time, and the displeasure immediately intensified.

Spurs had the chances to win this game, and with no wins in eleven, Tottenham provided the perfect opportunity for Nuno Espirito Santo to reignite some belief in his West Ham players to close the gap to just four points between themselves and survival.

The Hammers obliged on Saturday afternoon, but for Thomas Frank, time seems to be running out to convince the Spurs hierarchy that he is the man to turn things around.
