From start to finish, Enzo Maresca's side were in control at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. We defended well, limiting the home side to very little, and carried a threat when we progressed into the final third.

It was Joao Pedro who proved our match-winner; the Brazilian struck clinically in the 34th minute of the game after excellent work from Moises Caicedo.

We fashioned further chances that weren't taken – denying us a greater margin of victory – but come the full-time whistle, it was those in the away end who were jubilant.

This visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium wasn't quite as dramatic as in the previous two campaigns, but that was partly because the Blues were in control from start to finish.

We limited the home side to very little while creating several chances of our own. Only one was taken, Joao Pedro firing home in the 34th minute after excellent work from Moises Caicedo, but it proved enough for Enzo Maresca's side.

The Chelsea players and staff celebrated passionately in front of the away supporters after the full-time whistle – winning at Spurs will always mean more than just three points.

We have picked out 40 of our favourite images below, so scroll through and enjoy!

Description

Chelsea dominated the first half and were good value for the one-goal lead we held at the break, after some fine Moises Caicedo pressing resulted in Joao Pedro opening the scoring.

In truth, the Blues were rarely troubled by our hosts and we could have added another in the second half, as Pedro Neto twice forced saves from Guglielmo Vicario in normal time, Jamie Gittens missed a great chance late on and the Spurs goalkeeper produced a stunning save to deny Joao Pedro deep into injury-time.

We had to settle for the solitary goal but it was enough to secure another victory over Tottenham and move us into the top four, level on points with Spurs in third.

Ten changes

Having made ten changes to the starting line-up for Wednesday's Carabao Cup win at Wolves, Maresca made another ten alterations today, which included two changes to the side that lost to Sunderland in our last Premier League clash, with Wesley Fofana and Malo Gusto starting instead of Josh Acheampong and Marc Guiu.

Robert Sanchez was back in goal, Gusto started alongside Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah, with Marc Cucurella on the left.

Reece James started in central midfield alongside Moises Caicedo, as Enzo Fernandez played in the more advanced role, with Pedro Neto on the right, Alejandro Garnacho on the left and Joao Pedro leading the line.

As for Spurs, Thomas Frank made two changes to the starting XI that faced Everton, with Pape Sarr and Lucas Bergvall coming in for Xavier Simons and Brennan Johnson.

Just three points separated the Blues and third-placed Tottenham heading into the game.

There was little to talk about in the opening ten minutes as both teams were sizing each other up. The Blues did have a few corners early on but the closest we got to troubling Vicario in goal was a blocked Cucurella shot when a cross was half-cleared.

The Blues had dominated possession in the opening 20 minutes and were carrying the greater threat. We continued to probe but could only muster a wayward long-range effort from James and a relatively tame Garnacho strike which was easily held low to Vicario's left.

The first clear-cut chance came just after the half-hour mark when some good pressing from Garnacho saw the winger divert a pass into the path of Joao Pedro inside the penalty area but his first-time shot on the angle was saved by the legs of Vicario.

Spurs went straight up the other end and had their best opportunity so far, as Mohammed Kudus shot over the bar from outside the area, but a few minutes later and we had taken the lead.

Blues ahead

Caicedo's ability to win the ball back is arguably unrivalled in the Premier League and our opener was almost all down to the Ecuadorian. Deep in the opposition half, Caicedo first tackled Djed Spence, before pressing Xavi Simons to the point he had to pass back to Micky van de Ven and the midfielder then dispossessed the Spurs captain on the edge of his own box. The midfielder then dived in to flick the ball to Joao Pedro, leaving the Brazilian with a relatively simple finish into the top corner.

Chelsea could have doubled our advantage before the break when Gusto crossed from the right and Joao Pedro's first-time effort was struck powerfully but was too central and was palmed over by Vicario.

For all of our dominance, Tottenham had the chance to equalise deep into injury-time when Kudus looked to curl a shot inside the far post but Sanchez produced a smart save, as he parried the ball away from the on-rushing Spurs attackers.

Chelsea started the second period brightly, as Caicedo turned well to beat the Spurs' press and set Enzo on his way. The Argentine had a couple of options either side but opted to shoot, forcing Vicario into a save low to his left.

Chelsea were doing well at keeping Spurs penned in their own half and had three chances in quick succession. Enzo headed over from James' cross, good strength from Joao Pedro led to Neto having a low shot saved and moments later, the Portuguese just couldn't direct the ball goalwards from close range following Garnacho's low delivery across the face of goal.

The Blues went close to a second with just over a quarter of an hour remaining when Gittens passed to Joao Pedro, his flick went into Enzo's path and his pass was followed by a powerful drive from Neto at a tight angle, which had to be parried away. James then curled an effort over from the resulting play.

Chelsea had two glorious chances in injury-time. First a breakaway move ended with Gittens firing over the bar and then Joao Pedro would have scored a second had it not been for an outstanding save by Vicario from point-blank range.

But it wasn't to matter as Chelsea recorded yet another victory against Tottenham. The Blues have now won 11 of our last 14 games against Spurs.

What it means

Chelsea are now up to fourth place on 17 points, level with Spurs in third, Sunderland in fifth and sixth-placed Manchester United - although the Black Cats do have a game in hand. Bournemouth, who also have a game in hand, are one point above in second.

What's next

The Blues' next game comes on Wednesday in the Champions League when we face the long trip to Qarabag.

Our next Premier League fixture sees us back at the Bridge where we face Wolves once again.

Enzo Maresca on his squad’s 'fantastic' evolution and development

Description

Development is never linear; there are often ups and downs along a journey. Maresca is more than aware of that.

As his players continue to grow and refine their talent, the Blues head coach is prepared to deal with those peaks and troughs, and he pointed to our 4-3 win over Wolves as a perfect example.

We showed our quality in spades at Molineux by racing to a 3-0 lead before the break. But after the interval, we struggled to maintain our grip on the game as the home side fought back. We eventually claimed a 4-3 victory.

That secured our place in the final eight of the Carabao Cup, and Maresca feels that his side will only improve from experiences such as that against Wolves.

Speaking ahead of tonight's trip to Tottenham, he said: ‘During Wednesday’s game, the first half was completely under control. The second half, probably after the first goal we conceded, we panicked a little bit. I think it’s part of the learning process of this squad and this team.

‘Wednesday night, we had one player born in 2007, three players from 2006, four players from 2004, one player from 2003, another from 2002, and the oldest player born in 1997. So, it is all part of the learning process.

‘We took some risks, and I was told after the game that we had an average age of 21. So this is normal. They are young and they need to improve, they need to understand, and they need to live some experience to get better. For sure, in the future we are going to be fantastic.’

Our head coach did, however, point to our success over the summer as proof of the ability within the Blues’ squad.

‘No one expected us to win the Club World Cup because of our age, and we did it,’ he explained. ‘In the Premier League, it’s about consistency during the season, and the main target is to be consistent during the season.

‘We played against Wolves and we achieved a place in the quarter-final, and now we have Tottenham in the Premier League.’

Description

There are few better ways for the Blues to right the wrongs of last weekend's defeat to Sunderland than by claiming victory on Tottenham soil and leapfrogging Thomas Frank's side in the Premier League table.

Spurs have the best away record in the top flight this term but have not been as convincing on their own patch, with two defeats in their four matches in north London.

On Wednesday, both the Blues and Tottenham were in Carabao Cup action. Spurs were knocked out at Newcastle United, while Chelsea survived a second-half scare to win 4-3 at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Enzo Maresca’s side will take on Cardiff City of League One in the last eight, the club’s fifth quarter-final appearance in 10 seasons.

The first Saturday in November usually means fireworks, and Chelsea will be confident of putting on a display equal to the one across the borough at Ally Pally.

The west Londoners have completed the league double over our N17 neighbours in back-to-back seasons, and we are the most successful visiting side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, claiming five victories in our six matches.

The world champions are also unbeaten in our previous seven London debies, and our most recent turnout in this Saturday evening slot brought the thrilling victory over Liverpool.

Chelsea team news

Cole Palmer remains sidelined as he continues to recover from a groin issue. Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Dario Essugo are also ruled out due to injury. Liam Delap is suspended due to the red card he was shown in midweek.

Joao Pedro didn't feature at Molineux as he continues to be managed by the Blues coaching staff, while Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo were second-half substitutes. Yet Maresca confirmed the trio are ready to feature in north London if called upon.

'They are okay, they are available,' he said. 'The reason why Joao didn’t play against Wolves is that we tried to protect him. It was the same thing with Moi and with Enzo, just giving them some minutes, but the idea is to protect these players.

'Game by game, we can’t plan with them because of their problems, their situations. So, it's about taking it game-by-game and seeing how many minutes we can use them. We try to use the whole squad because, at this moment, we need the whole squad.'

The history

Chelsea have won 68 of the league matches in this 115-year-old cross-town rivalry, the most against any club.

Twenty-nine of those have come at the Cockerels’ home, which has, after a 12-year unbeaten run between 1989 and 2001, been known to Blues supporters as ‘Three Point Lane’.

The west triumphing over north London bias continued after White Hart Lane was demolished in 2017, with a fine Marcos Alonso securing a 2-1 win at Tottenham’s temporary Wembley home.

Since a defeat at the national stadium in October 2018, the Blues have won five of our six league fixtures in N17, starting with our debut appearance at their current ground in December 2019.

Two goals from Willian without reply delivered the early Christmas present of three points – and the next two visits were wins to nil.

A 2-0 loss under Graham Potter in November 2023 was followed by Chelsea’s biggest win on Tottenham's own patch since the legendary 6-1 in December 1997.

A string of VAR decisions, disallowed goals and sending-offs made for irresistible drama and the Blues' 4-1 victory came despite Dejan Kulusevski’s opener.

Last season’s encounter was almost as strange. Again, Spurs took the lead, and were two up before the west Londoners got into gear.

Jadon Sancho pulled one back, but it was past the hour before the impressive Cole Palmer levelled with the first of two penalties. Enzo Fernandez put Maresca’s side ahead before Palmer’s second from the spot with five to go. Son Heung-Min's last-minute strike was not enough and Chelsea stayed second with the win.

The one-sided nature of this derby in the Premier League era is reflected in a disparity of 116 in goal difference between the two sides from our meetings ( +58 for the Blues; -58 for the Lilywhites).
