Hello and welcome to football.london's live coverage of Tottenham's Europa League encounter against Ferencvaros.

Following four successive victories in all competitions, Spurs will be looking to make it five on the bounce by collecting all three points in Budapest, Hungary.

Ange Postecoglou's side made a very impressive start to their European campaign last Thursday after recording a 3-0 win over Qarabag despite playing with ten men for virtually all of the contest.

The Spurs boss will likely rotate his team once again and it will allow those currently on the periphery of the starting XI the opportunity to make their case for Sunday's game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Tottenham correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest are covering the match with all the build-up and the action as it happens on the pitch and reaction from the supporters and media.

Scroll down for all of our latest updates from the Groupama Arena.

case Dominic Solanke scenario clear with 14

Description

Dominic Solanke has endured an exhilarating first two months at Tottenham following his £65million move from Bournemouth. On his debut for Spurs against Leicester, Solanke was very bright, though he was unable to find the back of the net from several attempts at goal with an unfortunate injury then striking.

Ange Postecoglou's new signing then missed games against Everton and Newcastle, with the Lilywhites particularly missing his presence in the defeat to the latter. His return arrived against Arsenal, and he has now found the back of the net in each of his last three appearances, with Postecoglou full of praise for his recent displays.

"He got injured really early in the game at Leicester and then proceeded to miss a couple, so for him it's probably been a little bit frustrating, but I knew what we were bringing to the football club," Postecoglou admitted earlier this week. "I was really confident that the way we play and his attributes that he was going to be a great fit."

"I could see that from the first day of training, but we had to be patient. He's getting up there now in terms of physical fitness, I think every game he looks like he's getting stronger. It's a demanding role up front for us, it's not just about goals, it’s about his link-up play and pressing.

"We've put a fair amount of workload on him.. Obviously the goals help. He's a striker. He wants to score goals and that helps him to feel better about the beginning of his career here." Asked about the possibility of an England call-up, Postecoglou added: "There are no issues around him from a physical perspective.

"I get enough stick for my own selections, mate so I am not going to get involved in anyone else's selections, but yeah Dom is fine." Though his goals could all be considered easy finishes, his movement to get into those positions has been key and it appears interim head coach Lee Carsley has taken notice of exactly that.

On Thursday, Solanke was named in his Three Lions squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland. If the 27-year-old features over the international break, it will not be his debut with that arriving seven years ago, and the man himself has paid tribute to that in his reaction to being selected on social media.

Alongside a picture of him making his first appearance for his country, he captioned the Instagram post: "It's been a while! [grinning face with sweat emoji]. Delighted to be called up to represent my country again [lion and white heart emoji]."

While Solanke absolutely deserves this opportunity given his performances over the last 12 months, Postecoglou will be fearful of the worst happening. Former Spurs star Harry Kane will likely play most of the two games, but Solanke could still feature, and with that, the possibility of injury striking is a scenario that could play out.

Given Postecoglou's recent comments about his physical condition and interrupted start to the season, he may pick up a fresh injury, and that would be a disaster for Tottenham.

Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear make full debuts

Ange Postecoglou has named Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear in his Tottenham Hotspur side to take on Ferencvaros on Thursday night in the Europa League.

Spurs have plenty of players missing in Hungary, travelling without the injured Son Heung-min, Destiny Udogie, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison, while Radu Dragusin is suspended and Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon, who flew over to train with the team, were both left out of the club's Europa League squad as there was no space for them.

Tottenham play again in two-and-a-half days' time with a trip to Brighton on Sunday afternoon and with that in mind Postecoglou has named only four players who started in the win at Old Trafford.

Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear both coming into the starting line-up with fellow academy youngsters, defenders Alfie Dorrington and Dante Cassanova and 18-year-old winger Damola Ajayi all on the bench.

Archie Gray looks to be at left-back with Ben Davies at centre-back with Lucas Bergvall making it four teenagers in the starting XI.

Here's the team Postecoglou has chosen to face Ferencvaros at the Groupama Arena: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Davies, Gray; Sarr, Bissouma, Bergvall, Moore, Lankshear, Werner. Subs: Forster, Austin, Van de Ven, Dorrington, Cassanova, Bentancur, Maddison, Kulusevski, Johnson, Ajayi, Solanke.

I wanted to sign for Tottenham but Arsenal director stopped me

Tottenham have been linked with plenty of strikers in the past. The reality is that very few of the transfer rumours translate into anything concrete though.

One name that may have been quickly forgotten though is that of Paolo Guerrero. The Peruvian striker, now 40, was heavily linked with a move to Spurs in 2013.

But a deal failed to materialise. That was not for the want of trying on the player's part though, who seemed determined to make the move to north London.

Guerrero had only joined Brazilian club Corinthians in 2012, following spells in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and Hambrug. But by January 2013, he was ready to leave, with Tottenham making an offer to the striker.

Current Arsenal technical director Edu, however, stood in his way. Whether that was to do with his Arsenal connections, or just because he wanted to keep Guerrero in Brazil, only he will know.

Edu was the sporting director at Corinthians at the time. Speaking about his football journey, Guerrero explained what happened in an interview with DyT’s Diego Rebagliati and Talía Azcárate.

As reported by Sport Witness, Guerrero said: "When I arrived at Corinthians, I said to myself: ‘I win the Club World Cup and I’ll go back’ [to Europe].

"Did I have opportunities to return to Europe? Many, but Corinthians didn’t want to sell me or didn’t want to negotiate. The last offer came from Tottenham, which was a loan-purchase [option].”

"I went with the proposal to talk to Edu Gaspar, who is now Arsenal’s director, and I said ‘I have this, please’. His response was: ‘Do you want the crooked thing to kill me, Paolo? Rest assured that here you will be the highest paid footballer in South America’."

Description

Budapest is a beautiful city but it probably did not feel that way for Ange Postecoglou as he stood barking orders in the middle of the Groupama Arena in the torrential rain.

We're talking heavy rain, not your bog-standard English drizzle. It was unusual in itself to see the Tottenham head coach leading a training session. The Australian's style is more to observe, to hand his coaches a philosophy and framework and then allow them to work with autonomy within that.

After each session, he will sit down for a long debrief with them all, going over everything he liked and didn't like about each session and they will all pour over every aspect of each player's performance during the session, both positive and negative.

However, here in Budapest, Postecoglou was slap, bang in the middle of the session, yelling instructions and encouragement to the players. That's not to say it was something completely unusual, the 59-year-old does take the odd session when he wants to get his hands dirty and ensure his messages get directly to his players so it wasn't something purely for the watching media, who were allowed to see the first 15 minutes of the session.

There were a few new faces in the Tottenham group. Postecoglou had added to his two usual academy players Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear with three talented youngsters in defenders Alfie Dorrington and Dante Cassanova, 19 and 20 respectively, as well as exciting 18-year-old winger Damola Ajayi.

Centre-back Dorrington has recently returned after a long recovery from hamstring surgery and is highly rated within the club for his comfort on the ball - think a junior version of Romero's ability to pass between the lines and Van de Ven's running forward with the ball.

Cassanova has proved to be an important and versatile defender within Wayne Burnett's U21s side in recent seasons with his ability to play in the centre of defence or as a right-back. Ajayi is a direct attacker, who can play down the right wing, or in an attacking central role either in midfield or up front. He's full of tricks and flicks and running.

All three of the players have been added to the Europa League B list for youngsters, which had to be submitted by end of the play on Wednesday night. They will all be hoping to be included among the 12 substitutes on the bench for the game, but that's not guaranteed. Tyrese Hall and Luca Gunter were both added to the list for the home match against Qarabag last week, but Postecoglou went with only 10 subs on the night. You would hope that the travelling trio would get the nod for making the journey, although the experience so far with the first team will already have been invaluable.

There was also a more senior player involved on Wednesday, even though they can't play on Thursday, with Sergio Reguilon brought along for the training session in Budapest, while Djed Spence was left to prepare in the UK to be in the perfect shape if called upon on Sunday at Brighton should Destiny Udogie not be available to play with his quads problem.

The training session in Hungary, which would have been lighter pre-game one, the media were only able to witness running, rondos and that big full-sided attacking drill in the opening 15 minutes.

Before it all, both Postecoglou and James Maddison had taken part in separate press conferences within the stadium. Spurs have often held joint press conferences for European games in the past, but having them separate is far better for the media because sometimes players might be less inclined to say interesting things or have big opinions with their manager sitting right next to them.

Maddison is a great person to throw questions at. He's very thoughtful and articulate with his answers and is rarely far from bringing a touch of humour to proceedings. Don't bet against the 27-year-old midfielder becoming a television pundit when he eventually hangs up his boots.

He was great on his hopes of getting back into today's England squad but also on 17-year-old Mikey Moore, who he has taken under his wing this year, and you can tell he sees something special in the young winger.

"Mikey, when he first came up I had to remind myself how young he actually is. When he first came up he was 16 and more of like a man already when I watch him play, he’s very powerful, and he’s only going to get stronger as he develops into his body," he said. "It’s quite scary, he’s got a lot of ability, but I don’t want him to feel any pressure because he’s getting a lot of people talking about him, and rightly so, and that’s down to him training well, getting in the first team and getting exposure which is what he wants.

"Firstly, he’s a great kid… a really polite and well-mannered young man, which is a credit to his family because as a senior player with a young lad coming up that’s the first thing you recognise. You don’t want a young lad coming up with that arrogance, and that who does he think he is… And then his ability on the ball. We’ve seen it in training and the Spurs fans will be keen to see more in games.

"But we see it in training. He’s got bags of ability and it looks to me as if he loves the game, loves playing, gets tackled and sometimes falls on the floor and jumps up as if nothing’s happened and he wants the ball again. So I’m really excited to see how his journey goes and try to help him as much as I can.

"I always try to have a little chat to him because I think ‘what would a 16 year old James Maddison want?’ and he would want one of the senior first team players to put an arm round him and one, treat him like a man, but also give him to advice to try and help him, and accelerate that success and living the journey he is going to have. He has got to go and do it when he gets the opportunity and I’m sure he will, and I’m sure he’s keen and eager to get going and get more minutes. I look forward to it."

Maddison was also open and interesting when it came to his friend Brennan Johnson, telling football.london about the image he posted on social media this week which was the Brazilian Ronaldo with the Wales international's face overlaid perfectly on to it.

"Brennan is first and foremost a very good friend, I’m close with him. I think a lot has made of him coming off social media which to him was probably not such a big thing. He’s the type of guy to have a break from that stuff anyway," he said. "People have maybe read too much into it too much but since then gone four in four I don’t think I’ll be telling him to redownload anytime soon.

"He’s a great kid, a brilliant player. No-one has every doubted that but he’s really showing it at the minute consistently. It’s not easy to score four games in a row. He’s a brilliant lad and a great friend of mine so I’m always there for him.

"That picture was a bit tongue in cheek, we found it funny when it was put in our group chat. But hopefully he can continue this form because he’s a real threat for us. He can do damage to a lot of oppositions in the Premier League and Europe so I like to see him in that rich vein of form."

Postecoglou's press conference featured a reflection upon his three years spent working with the legendary Ferenc Puskas, during which time he was the Hungarian's player, driver and translator in South Melbourne as they swept to the title.

"I was blessed to be able to spend three years in the company of one of the greatest footballers of all time but more importantly for me an outstanding person," said the Australian. "He was one of the greatest people I've ever come across and I feel really fortunate to have had those three years with him, where I was able to sit there and talk to a person who in the football world had done everything but more importantly a person who I had so much respect and admiration for.

"I still think about it and it still feels unreal to me that I got that opportunity being based in Australia. As you get older you keep those experiences even more. I would love for him to still be around today to see where I am because he played a role in me becoming certainly the football manager I am. He played a role in that but also the person I’ve become."

It wasn't just about the Spurs press conferences though. The Ferencvaros head coach Pascal Jansen is a fascinating character as well, having been born in London to an English mother. Sue Chaloner was one half of Spooky and Sue, a musical duo that enjoyed chart success in the Netherlands during the 1970s. She passed away in April this year after a remarkable life, having begun it in foster care and rising to enjoy musical success.

Jansen admitted that while he moved to Holland when he was young, he would return to spend periods of time back with his grandparents in Aylesbury and one of the teams he had an affection for while growing up was a certain Tottenham Hotspur.

There was also a touching moment within the 51-year-old's press conference when one local journalist burst through the door, midway through the questions and drenched by the rain and sweat while completely out of breath, he marched straight through the centre of proceedings to slump into a seat.

Many Premier League managers would have either dished out a stern word or two for the reporter's tardiness or made a joke about it. Jansen instead smiled sympathetically at him, then motioned towards one of the club staff and handed them the water bottle in front of him on the desk, asking them to take it over to the struggling reporter. When the journalist silently thanked him, he winked back. It was a simple gesture but a kind one.

Jansen and his team later surprised the group of travelling English journalists who were working in the lobby of the hotel around the corner of the stadium as the Ferencvaros squad and staff arrived en masse to check in after their training session. Watching them all them all disperse upstairs what must have been most of one of the hotel's floors and some return to relax around the lobby and bar area - nothing alcoholic drunk of course - was an unexpected sight.

Ferencvaros are top of the Hungarian top flight. They've won all six of their league games this season under Jansen, playing attacking football with 12 goals scored and only two conceded. This is not going to be an easy game for Postecoglou's Tottenham side despite their status as favourites.

Away games in Europe are rarely as straight forward as they might seem on paper. This one will be no different with the rain swept conditions and the roar of the crowd inside the Groupama Arena.

Postecoglou will be mindful that when Spurs land back in England late on Thursday night, they will have just two-and-a-half days until they have to go again against a high energy Brighton side at the Amex Stadium. Football does not allow much in the way of recovery nowadays and the Australian's injury-hit squad will be pushed to the limit over these handful of days.

First up though will be a wet night in Budapest and Spurs must focus on that. The club have been involved in too many European upsets over recent years - yes we see you Mura - to go into this game with any sense of complacency.

Ferencvaros vs Tottenham predicted – Brennan Johnson stars again but big opportunity missed

Tottenham return to Europa League action when they make the trip to Hungary to take on Ferencvaros later tonight.

The last few weeks have been kind to Spurs, with Ange Postecoglou's side starting to find some consistency. A fantastic performance saw Spurs beat Manchester United 3-0 in their last outing at Old Trafford, with the victory a fourth in a row across all competitions for the Lilywhites.

Now, Postecoglou's side have the chance to make it five wins on the bounce in all competitions – something Spurs have failed to do since March 2021. Heung-Min Son and Destiny Udogie have not travelled with the squad, while Radu Dragusin is suspended after his red card last week.

So, can Spurs make it two wins from two in the Europa League? Let's take a look.

We simulated Ferencvaros vs Spurs to get a score prediction

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that the hosts could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Dibusz; Botka, Cisse, Szalai, Ramirez; Fani, Rommens; Borges, Zachariassen, Traore; Varga.

We predict that Spurs could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Gray, Davies; Sarr, Bissouma, Bergvall; Johnson, Solanke, Werner.

The hosts started on the front foot in Hungary, and within just two minutes, Ferencvaros had taken a shock lead. After winning possession deep Spurs' half, a one-two between Kristoffer Zachariassen and Barnabas Varga saw the latter break through on goal before slotting under Guglielmo Vicario.

The early goal acted as a wake-up call to Spurs, and after going behind, they started to dominate. Brennan Johnson missed two huge chances to score, but it was third time lucky for the Welshman as the Lilywhites drew level.

A strong challenge from Cristian Romero saw the defender turnover possession on the halfway line, allowing Spurs to hit the hosts on the counterattack. Yves Bissouma picked out the run of Johnson with a perfect through ball, and one-on-one, the winger fired into the roof of the net to make it 1-1.

Dominic Solanke, Timo Werner, and Lucas Bergvall were all guilty of missing big chances in the second half, with Postecoglou's side doing everything right but scoring. They were unable to find a winner, meaning they had to settle for a point on the road.

EA FC 25 pre dicted final score: Ferencvaros 1-1 Spurs

New role for Archie Gray as big Mikey Moore call made

Tottenham Hotspur have plenty of absent players to work without as they take on Ferencvaros on Thursday night in the Europa League.

Spurs have travelled to Hungary without the injured Son Heung-min, Destiny Udogie, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison, while Radu Dragusin is suspended and Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon, who has travelled to train with the team, were both left out of the club's Europa League squad as there was no space for them.

Ange Postecoglou has brought along a smattering of academy youngsters who could make the squad for the game in Budapest in the shape of Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear, who both train regularly with the first team, as well as defenders Alfie Dorrington and Dante Cassanova and 18-year-old winger Damola Ajayi.

Archie Gray played as a centre-back during pre-season and the £40million 18-year-old could get a competitive start in the position if Postecoglou decides to rest Micky van de Ven on the rainswept pitch after the Dutchman played plenty of football over the past week.

James Maddison held a press conference on Wednesday in the Hungarian capital, but that does not always guarantee the player is in the starting line-up for the next day's match.

Postecoglou must also be wary that Tottenham travel to Brighton three two and a half days after the game in Budapest for a high energy Premier League game.

Here's the team we reckon Postecoglou could select to face Ferencvaros at the Groupama Arena.

Timo Werner could be about to be granted Tottenham wish by Ange Postecoglou

Description

Timo Werner will be praying that more starts come his way after getting the nod in last Sunday's 3-0 win over Manchester United. A huge day for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham as they put the Red Devils to the sword at Old Trafford with a dominant performance, the German played his part in the victory with a good display down the left in Son Heung-min's absence.

Werner did have a couple of really good openings to add to the scoreline but both attempts lacked the conviction required to beat Andre Onana. Aside from those missed chances, it was not hard to see why Postecoglou plumped for the 28-year-old in his starting XI as it allowed Spurs to keep the same shape, start with two pacey wingers in the team and it also stopped them taking Dejan Kulusevski out of a position he has thrived in of late.

Performing well at Old Trafford on his Spurs debut back in January, Werner was once again bright against United and linked up really well with Destiny Udogie and others down his side. Doing an awful lot of things right but just missing the final action at key times, it is those moments that some fans unfortunately remember.

One of those came late on in the contest after twice getting the better of his marker down Tottenham's left, only to then pull the ball behind a couple of his teammates, including Dominic Solanke, who were free just on the edge of the area. The initial play from Werner was excellent but again it was the last action that let him down.

Going back to his first effort on goal, perhaps having too much time to think on the ball proved to be a bad thing for him or it could be put down to a complete lack of confidence or even a lack of sharpness. Such a prolific goalscorer in his time in Germany after scoring 113 goals in 213 games for RB Leipzig, goals have been so much harder to come by for the attacker since moving to the Premier League.

Unfortunately for him, all the talk has been about some high-profile misses rather than putting the ball in the back of the net. What Werner does bring to the team is hard work and energy, though, and sometimes that can be overlooked.

The ex-Stuttgart man did make an impact at Tottenham immediately after joining on loan from RB Leipzig in January, contributing two goals and three assists in 14 games. It was no surprise to see why Postecoglou wanted him back for the 2024/25 campaign as he gives the team more experience, cover for Son down the left side with a lot more games on the calendar this time around and he also possesses the qualities that the head coach looks for in a winger.

Werner has so far made six appearances this season, with four of them coming from the substitutes' bench. The player has tended to be introduced in the final 10-15 minutes of Premier League matches and that is barely enough time to get up to the speed of the game let alone make a big impact on proceedings.

His first start of the season at Coventry City was one to forget but his showing at Manchester United, aside from those two missed chances of course, should help give him a confidence boost that he quite clearly requires. Another start looks likely to come his way on Thursday evening when Tottenham take on Ferencvaros in their second Europa League game.

In terms of helping him get a much-needed confidence boost, this could possibly be the game with opportunities likely to be there on goal for him. Whether he scores a 30-yard screamer or the ball comes off his backside from one-yard out, a goal could make all the difference to Werner right now.

A shrewd signing for the club back in January, the Stuttgart-born player still has a big role to play for Tottenham over the course of the season. Postecoglou brings out the very best in his players and he will be determined to get even more out of Werner, starting in Thursday's game at Ferencvaros.

Ange Postecoglou will be without three key Tottenham players for the Europa League clash away at Ferencvaros. Spurs head into the game off the back of four consecutive victories in three different competitions with the most recent triumph arriving at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke were all on target with Spurs delivering an impressive attacking display, even with the absence of Son Heung-min. Timo Werner was the man to replace him in the starting XI for the clash with Postecoglou otherwise naming an unchanged team.

A midfield three of Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski has been thriving in recent weeks with the latter capable of also playing out wide. His switch into a central position has left Spurs somewhat light on the wings with Wilson Odobert, like Son, also currently absent through injury.

There was hope he could recover from the hamstring issue picked up against Qarabag but he was left out of the squad to face Man United and Postecoglou has now also confirmed that he and two others have not travelled to Budapest and are thus unavailable.

"Destiny hasn't travelled," the Tottenham boss revealed on Wednesday. "Nothing significant, but didn't makes sense to bring him if he wasn't going to play. Radu is suspended and Sonny is back in London doing rehab." Radu Dragusin is suspended for the clash after picking up a red card the previous week.

As a result of those three names, that were all in the squad to face Qarabag, Postecoglou looks set to call on more youngsters. Will Lankshear and Mikey Moore have both been included in recent matchday squads with the latter putting in a bright cameo against Man United.

With that said, football.london has taken a look at the Tottenham squad, which can include up 22 players, Postecoglou could select for the Europa League clash in Hungary.

Midfielders: James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Dante Cassanova.
