Tottenham made it four wins on the spin with a convincing 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Ange Postecoglou's side were dealt a blow ahead of the game with captain Son Heung-min missing out after sustaining a hamstring injury in the midweek win over Qarabag.

Heading to Old Trafford in confident mood following their upturn in form, Spurs made the best possible start to the game with Brennan Johnson converting Micky van de Ven's cross after three minutes. It was in fact the winger's fourth goal in as many games after previously going through a bit of a tough period with criticism coming his way.

Johnson was a matter of inches away from doubling his tally on 20 minutes after striking the post following some excellent work involving Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner and Dejan Kulusevski. United were very poor in the first half but they almost restored parity ten minutes before the break as Alejandro Garnacho struck the post, with Werner then missing a glorious one-on-one chance for Tottenham moments later.

Things were to get even worse for the hosts before half-time as Bruno Fernandes was given his marching orders for a high lunge on James Maddison. Needing to get that second goal to stop United from finding a way back into the contest after such an insipid display, Spurs doubled their tally two minutes into the second half with Kulusevski finishing off Johnson's pass in some style.

It could have been even better for Spurs not long after with Werner again wasting an opportunity when played clear through on goal once again. They did manage to make it three in the 77th minute with Dominic Solanke getting his name on the scoresheet with a finish from point-blank range.

Here are five things we spotted in the game at Old Trafford.

Moore wait goes on and no Davies

Amid the huge question marks over Son's fitness going into the Manchester United fixture, plenty of Tottenham fans made their feelings known over his replacement in the team ahead of the game. Having the choice of either pushing Kulusevski back into the attack or giving Werner a go from the off, some Spurs fans wanted Postecoglou to be brave and opt for another option altogether.

Many believed it was the perfect opportunity to unleash Mikey Moore from the off in the Premier League after four substitute appearances for the club so far. Postecoglou thought otherwise and opted for Werner from the start, which was maybe a decision that didn't go down too well with quite a few.

The German may have missed two golden opportunities in his game time but he played his part in the win with some good link-up play with Udogie and others. Moore was introduced in his place late on in the contest and Johnson could be seen have a bit of a pep talk with him before he entered the fray.

Moore's time in the Tottenham starting XI will come. Continue to develop at his current rate and it may be sooner rather than later.

Due to the absence of Son and with Richarlison and Wilson Odobert currently out injured, Will Lankshear came into the Tottenham squad in the Premier League for the very first time but there was to be no league bow for the hotshot. One player who did miss out altogether was Ben Davies, who was once again the defender omitted with Radu Dragusin, Djed Spence and Archie Gray preferred as defensive options.

The Welshman has performed well in his playing time this season but Postecoglou's decision highlights his place in the pecking order as things stand.

That Van de Ven run

Van de Ven has more than made his mark in a Tottenham shirt since moving to north London from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023. Coming to the attention of all in the Premier League following an incredible debut season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Dutchman once again made everyone stand up and take notice on Sunday with a sublime piece of play inside the opening three minutes at Old Trafford.

Seizing upon Marcus Rashford's heavy touch, Van de Ven sprinted upfield and he kept going and going and going. Using his pace to breeze beyond four Manchester United players and get to the byline, he then pulled the ball back and Johnson was on hand to tap home at the back post.

Johnson, as he always does in a Tottenham shirt, looked to attack the back post when Spurs were attacking down the left and he reaped the rewards as a result. While of course the winger will get the credit for his goal, it was all down to Van de Ven after that majestic run from his own half.

The Tottenham way

Everything appears to be clicking into place for Postecoglou's Tottenham side after initially struggling during the opening weeks of the season. Failing to create clear-cut opportunities on goal on a number of occasions, Spurs don't appear to have those issues now as they could have left Manchester with a lot more than the three goals they scored in their win.

Manchester United just couldn't live with them for the vast majority of the contest at Old Trafford as Spurs created chance after chance. As pleasing on the eye as Johnson's goal was from Van de Ven's pass, Spurs did create some very good openings from some excellent moves, including the one that saw Johnson strike the post after some fine play between Udogie and Werner before Kulusevski played in his teammate.

Werner was then unlucky midway through the first half with Noussair Mazraoui on hand to clear at the back post with another Spurs move cutting the host to ribbons. Despite missing Son, Spurs caused Erik ten Hag's men constant issues with Kulusevski and Maddison pushing and probing in midfield as they sensed so many opportunities in the final third.

No Udogie chances

Tottenham were given a scare midway through the first half at Old Trafford with Udogie going to ground and needing treatment. It did appear that the Italian's day was over as he sat on the floor and received treatment as Spence waited to come on.

The ex-Middlesbrough man was all kitted out and ready to go but Udogie managed to get back to his feet to carry on. The left-back would see out the remainder of the first half but he did not reappear after the break as Spurs decided to take no chances with him as they wanted to avoid him joining Son on the sidelines.

Spence made his mark immediately after coming on as he caused United some issues down their right flank with some positive runs forward. It was a good outing for a player who has fought his way back into Postecoglou's plans after his two loan spells away from the club last term.

The battle of Uruguay

Rodrigo Bentancur gave everyone a timely reminder of his quality when the sides last met at Old Trafford at the start of 2024. Scoring a good goal on the day as Spurs left Manchester with a point following a 2-2 draw, the Uruguay international once again delivered a brilliant showing at the Theatre of Dreams.

Tottenham fans have had to wait a long time to see Bentancur at the top of his game following an injury nightmare over the past 18 months but he does appear to be getting back to his previous levels if his past few performances are anything to go by. The classy midfielder set the tempo and dictated play in the middle of the pitch as Tottenham ran riot against United and cut them open with ease.

Bentancur was coming up against fellow countryman Manuel Ugarte at Old Trafford, with the ex-Sporting CP man, who cost Manchester United £50million, handed his first Premier League start for the Red Devils. There was only one winner in that battle, however, with Bentancur and Tottenham outstanding on a very good day for the football club.

Tottenham came away with a 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday in the Premier League and here are our Spurs player ratings from the game.

Ange Postecoglou was forced into one key change from Tottenham's previous Premier League game with Son Heung-min missing out with a hamstring issue and Timo Werner came in to take his place on the left-hand side of the visitors' attack. Spurs arrived in Manchester with three wins to their name in eight days following their last-gasp Carabao Cup victory at Coventry City, followed up by a dominant Premier League win against Brentford and then a 3-0 triumph with 10 men against Qarabag in the Europa League.

Tottenham were ahead within three minutes. Micky van de Ven made a great interception in his own half before embarking on a long run up the pitch and he kept going until the byline where he pulled it across the six-yard box for Brennan Johnson to slam home his fourth goal in four games.

Spurs pummelled the United goal and the home side's day got worse when captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a high lunge on James Maddison.

The visitors doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half. Dominic Solanke showed strength before heading on a ball for Johnson to race down the right flank. The Wales international's cross was deflected up and the unmarked Dejan Kulusevski touched it past Andre Onana.

Postecoglou made a triple change with 15 minutes to go and two of them made an instant impact with another set piece goal as Lucas Bergvall whipped in a great corner, Pape Matar Sarr flicked it on and Solanke slid home his third goal in as many games.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings from the game:

Guglielmo Vicario

Made an important close range first half save from Zirkzee. His handling was excellent throughout even if he didn't have that much to do. 8

Pedro Porro

The Spaniard was superb both in defence in dealing with Garnacho and in getting forward and he should have had a late assist for Solanke. 9

Cristian Romero

Captain in Son's absence, the Argentine sent an acrobatic scissors kick just wide after the half hour mark. He was dominant throughout. 8

Micky van de Ven

Great interception and long run up the pitch to set up Johnson for his early goal. Kept frustrating United with his ability to race back and get the ball back off them. One of the best defenders in the Premier League. 9

Destiny Udogie

Fired over after being picked out by Kulusevski in the box. Went on a good run that ended with Johnson hitting the post before appearing to have an injury with Spence set to come on, only for the Italian to decide he was fine to continue. Had another effort deflected over the crossbar around the half hour mark. Really impressive first half but came off at the break. 8

Dejan Kulusevski

Some lovely early interplay set up chances for Maddison and Udogie. A constant bundle of energy and doubled Spurs' lead early in the second half by touching home Johnson's deflected cross with a clever flick. He's found his groove in the deeper midfield role and Tottenham are benefiting hugely. 9

Rodrigo Bentancur

The Uruguayan was excellent at Old Trafford last season and he repeated the trick this time around. He absolutely bossed the midfield with his calmness on the ball as an outlet for the defence. 9

James Maddison

Played a great one-two 10 minutes in with Kulusevski only to be denied by Onana's shoulder. Was on the receiving end of the lunge that resulted in Fernandes being sent off. Another really good instrumental deeper performance. 8

Brennan Johnson

The fourth consecutive game he's scored in. as he slammed home Van de Ven's low cross. Struck the foot of the post before the 20 minute mark after a swift Spurs break. Put a couple of great low crosses into the box and one was deflected to Kulusevski to touch home. Worked really hard defensively in helping Porro out with Garnacho. He's found his rhythm and his confidence and it's great to see. 9

Dominic Solanke

Another good focal point performance and his strength and header to set Spurs away for their second goal was key. Fully deserved his late sliding goal to make it three goals in three games. Should have had a second goal late on when Onana got a foot to his shot as he ran through. 8

Timo Werner

His first Premier League start of the season and he was bright down the left. However, once again though he had a big chance after being sent clear and Onana saved with his legs. Had another moment before the hour mark when Onana foiled him, although his shot again wasn't particularly convincing. Does so many of the right things and he was good on the whole throughout this display, including working back to defend, but when it comes to the final part at the other end his confidence is shot, as shown with a pitch-long run that ended with him pulling the ball back behind his team-mates. 7

Subs

Djed Spence

Came on for the second half and did a good job down the right in keeping United at bay while getting up the pitch himself. 7

Mikey Moore

A bright cameo and curled a last-gasp effort just wide of the left-hand post. 6

Lucas Bergvall

Whipped in a great corner for Spurs' third goal and sent a shot over in the 86th minute which had Postecoglou telling him he should have passed to Moore. Had the boss screaming at him again for another misplaced pass. 6

Pape Matar Sarr

Great movement to flick on Bergvall's corner across to Solanke to score. Could have netted himself with a header wide from Solanke's saved shot. 7

Radu Dragusin

Replaced Van de Ven for the final minutes. N/A

Something unusual happened in Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur Premier League clash

The big Super Sunday clash in the Premier League came at Old Trafford where Manchester United took on Tottenham Hotspur. Both sides have started the season in indifferent form, with both teams locked on seven points from their first five games.

Both sides will be aiming for a top four spot come the end of the season and a place in next year's Champions League. Challenging for the Premier League title may be beyond both this year.

Given the pair will be battling for the Champions League places at the end of the campaign, matches betwen the two sides will be crucial. Even this early in the season.

Tottenham took the lead early on at Old Trafford, thanks in no small part to the work of defender Micky van de Ven. The Dutchman picked up the ball midway inside his own half and proceeded to run the rest of the length of the pitch unchallenged before sliding a ball across the six-yard box for Brennan Johnson to tap home.

But before a ball was even kicked in earnest, there was something unusual about the clash. Spurs captain Son Heung-min was deemed unavailable for selection, having gone off early in the Europa League match with Qarabag on Thursday night.

Timo Werner was his replacement in the starting lineup, but that meant for an unusual sight on the Spurs teamsheet. We cannot tell you exactly when it happened before, but for the first time in probably a long time there were no single-digit outfield players on the pitch.

No. 7 Son is often on the pitch, given his influence on the Tottenham team, as he will have been for a number of seasons prior to this one too.

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Son Heung-min "just wasn't right for today" after he was left out of the Tottenham squad for Sunday's game at Manchester United. Spurs were left sweating over the fitness of their captain going into the match at Old Trafford after he was replaced in the closing stages of the Europa League tie against Qarabag.

Postecoglou did make a handful of changes for the game against the team from Azerbaijan but Son remained in his starting XI. He would not play the full 90 minutes, however, after coming off in the 71st minute due to a hamstring issue.

The Australian admitted in his pre-match press conference that Son had "felt fatigue in his hamstring" during the match and the club had to determine whether that was actually an injury or just fatigue. With Son's fitness up in the air prior to the trip to Manchester, Son in the end did not travel north with his teammates as injury kept him on the sidelines.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the match about Son's fitness, Postecoglou said: "Short turnaround obviously from Thursday night and he just wasn't right for today so we're going there without him."

On how big a blow it is for Tottenham, also due to his leadership qualities, the 59-year-old added: "Yeah but we've had to sort of suffer those things a fair bit during my time here with key players missing out. We just have to learn to cope without him."

Son's absence does give Timo Werner a chance in the team as the German was preferred in attack to Mikey Moore and Dejan Kulusevski.

"Timo it's his position, it's where he's the most comfortable and that's why we brought him to the club for situations likes this and he gets an opportunity today," said Postecoglou.

Always one of the first names on the teamsheet for Tottenham, Son has already had a busy start to the 2024/25 campaign for both club and country. He has already played 549 club minutes and another 180 minutes across two South Korea matches this season.

Son's level of playing time is just not sustainable and Postecoglou knows it himself.

"No," admitted the Australian during his time with the media at Hotspur Way on Friday. "I would have wanted to ease his workload this early part of the season, but we lost Richy and we lost Dominic [Solanke], then we lost Wilson [Odobert]. Sometimes, it’s not the amount of injuries, but the kind of injuries you get.

"So he’s played more than I think than I certainly want him to and the idea of signing Dom and bringing in Wilson and extending Timo [Werner’s] loan was that we could manage his load because he's got international football as well.

"It's something that I'm mindful of but it's just the circumstances so far, and Sonny always wants to play, that’s his attitude, but we’ve got to be sensible about it. I don’t think it’s got so much to do with his age because I haven’t seen that affect him. It’s more I just don’t think that kind of workload in the modern game is sustainable.

"We’ve spoken a lot about fixture overload and part of that responsibility lies with us to try to protect our players and certainly with Sonny we’re going to have to be mindful of that."

Later in that encounter, Tottenham captain Son Heung-min had to come off with a hamstring issue and the South Korean star has not been passed fit to play in this latest game against United.

Son Heung-min is not part of Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham squad for Sunday's Premier League game against Manchester United at Old Trafford, football.london understands. Starting on Thursday evening in Spurs' 3-0 win over Qarabag in their Europa League opener, the 32-year-old was only on the pitch for 71 minutes after sustaining a hamstring injury in the match.

Not the news the north London club wanted ahead of such a big game at Old Trafford, Postecoglou revealed in his pre-match press conference at Hotspur Way on Friday afternoon that he didn't think Son was "too bad" and that his captain wanted to train on Saturday. The Australian went on to add that the reason Son went to ground was because he "felt fatigue in his hamstring" but they had to determine whether that was actually an injury or just fatigue.

Amid the question marks over his place in the Tottenham team at Manchester United, football.london understands that Son has not travelled to Manchester for the game. That in turn opens up the door for Timo Werner to come into the attack or possibly Dejan Kulusevski moving into the front three from his midfield berth.

During his time with the media on Friday, Postecoglou did mention that Son's level of playing time, which stands at 549 club minutes and another 180 minutes across two South Korea matches this season, is not sustainable.

"No," admitted the Australian. "I would have wanted to ease his workload this early part of the season, but we lost Richy and we lost Dominic [Solanke], then we lost Wilson [Odobert]. Sometimes, it’s not the amount of injuries, but the kind of injuries you get. We’ve spoken a lot about fixture overload and part of that responsibility lies with us to try to protect our players and certainly with Sonny we’re going to have to be mindful of that."

Postecoglou did go on to explain that Son will be left out of the team from time to time, although that is not a situation he will be discussing with Tottenham's No.7.

"No. I tend not to make decisions by consensus," he said. "I think when you've got a player like Sonny, I’ve had experience of working with guys like that before and they’re always going to want to play. Do I want to dull that competitiveness by having a reasoned discussion with him over a cup of tea and saying ‘Sonny, this is going to be great for you, great for me’?

"No, I’d rather I leave him out and he’s disappointed with me because I think that’s what you want in him, and sometimes it’s doing something for someone’s own good and that’s my decision, my responsibility and I’ve got to take that on board."

Jamie Carragher reckons Tottenham Hotspur are in danger of being seen as flat-track bullies.

The former Liverpool defender claimed in his column with The Telegraph that this notion 'must change' for Ange Postecoglou's side, who face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs came away with just four victories in 18 matches against sides that finished in the top-nine last season. This term, the trend has continued with victories against bottom-half outfits Everton, Crystal Palace, and Leicester City coupled with defeats against Newcastle and North London rivals Arsenal - as if to justify Carragher's thinking.

The stats surrounding this afternoon's fixture are not happy reading for Tottenham supporter. United have beaten Tottenham 24 times at Old Trafford, in the Premier League alone, and only Arsenal have beaten an opponent more at home (Everton) since the competition was rebranded in 1992.

Carragher, 46, went on: "Cynics will say the chairman has been proven right.

"Under [Ange] Postecoglou, Spurs are pleasing on the eye, but inconsistent, miles off being a title contender and their best chance of a successful season is winning a cup."

Carragher did concede that he would 'never turn the TV off' due to the entertainment value the north Londoners bring at both ends of the pitch. With Spurs, then, comes the classic debate; Would you rather win more games or be entertained?

For now, Postecoglou's name is, often, heard reverberating around the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium and, for the most part, fans appear pleased with an expansive, attacking style of football even if, at times, game-management has come under question.

Supporters who pay big money want to look forward to watching their side on the weekend. At what point does this overtake the importance of three points? Last season, Spurs' wait for a trophy went on; their last one came in 2008 and they also missed out on a coveted fourth-place finish.

Description

Ange Postecoglou is facing a significant Son Heung-min dilemma for this afternoon's Premier League clash against Manchester United. The Tottenham captain played 71 minutes in Thursday's 3-0 Europa League triumph over Qarabag, though his early departure looked to be because of a possible injury.

In the wake of Dominic Solanke scoring Tottenham's third goal, after reacting quickest to Son's effort that was saved, the South Korea international was captured in a heap on the floor. Physios quickly entered the pitch before it was decided no risks would be taken and he would be replaced by Timo Werner.

Under 24 hours later, Postecoglou was asked for an update on Son before Spurs' trip to Old Trafford at the weekend for a Premier League clash against Man United. "I think obviously it is still early days from last night, he admitted in a press conference.

"Fair to say the boys are fairly tired, the ones who put in a shift. Apart from Sonny everybody is okay and Sonny I don’t think is too bad. He wants to train tomorrow and we will see how it goes and make a decision from there. We have another day up our sleeve to give him every chance."

With Spurs vs United as one of the final games of the weekend, Son has ample time to recover from the issue that left him stricken at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this week. However, he remains a huge injury doubt for the clash with it unknown if Postecoglou will risk him for such an important game.

In terms of potential replacements, with Wilson Odobert injured, Werner is the most natural option but both Brennan Johnson or Dejan Kulusevski could fill in if needed. The Germany international made his Spurs debut in this exact fixture last year and picked up an assist for Rodrigo Bentancur's strike that levelled the game at 2-2.

However, if Son is deemed fit and available it will come as a huge boost with Tottenham perhaps inadvertently hinting he will be involved. On Instagram, promoting the fixture, Spurs posted their pre-match graphic and right in the centre alongside Pedro Porro, Johnson and Kulusevski, is Son.

Being included in such a graphic, often hints at a players' involvement and therefore that could be good news with Son among the four stars included.

Following the clash against United, Spurs remain on their travels as they head to Hungary for a European tie against Ferencvaros before then heading to the south coast on Sunday for a Premier League game against Brighton before the October international break commences.

We simulated Manchester United vs Tottenham to get a score prediction for Premier League clash

Tottenham will be looking to make it four wins on the bounce in all competitions later today when they travel north to take on Manchester United in the Premier League.

Despite going down to 10 men after just eight minutes, Spurs picked up a 3-0 win over Qarabag in the Europa League midweek to give them a perfect start to their Europa League campaign. Next up for Ange Postecoglou's side is a tough test in the Premier League, with Spurs taking on United at Old Trafford.

Spurs took four points from their two games against the Red Devils last season, winning 2-0 in north London before being held to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. So, can Spurs continue their unbeaten run against Man Utd later today? Let's take a look.

We simulated Man United vs Spurs to get a score prediction

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that United could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Ugarte, Mainoo, Fernandes; Amad, Hojlund, Rashford.

We predict that Spurs could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bentancur, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Johnson.

Spurs had the worst possible start at Old Trafford, with an early United corner seeing Matthijs de Ligt rise highest and head home to give the hosts an early lead. The goal gave Erik ten Hag's side a huge confidence boost, and 20 minutes in, United managed to double their lead.

After scoring the opening goal, De Ligt was involved again, winning back possession with a challenge on Brennan Johnson before sending a long ball forward. His pass beat the Spurs high line to send Rasmus Hojlund through on goal, and the striker kept his composure to fire home and make it 2-0.

Pape Sarr intercepted Kobbie Mainoo's pass deep in the United half, allowing Spurs to hit the hosts on the break. Sarr carried the ball forward before placing the ball into the path of Dejan Kulusevski, and after cutting back onto his left, he curled his strike into the far corner to make it 3-1.

With a goal under their belt, Spurs started to push forward as they looked to muster up a comeback, but it was too little too late as they fell to defeat at Old Trafford.

EA FC 25 predicted final score: Man United 3-1 Spurs
