Tottenham already have their own Martin Odegaard for North London Derby and it's not who you think

The Premier League season may only be three games old but we are already seeing familiar patterns emerging.

Erling Haaland is already the top scorer in the league, bagging an incredible seven goals in three matches - with two hat-tricks in that time. Cole Palmer is leading the assists chart with four, while Liverpool's Alisson is top of the clean sheet list, having yet to concede a goal.

There are certain things, like these, that you can simply rely on to happen in the Premier League. And then there are things that take you somewhat by surprise.

One of the biggest games of the season takes place on Sunday as Tottenham Hotspur host Arsenal for the first North London Derby of the campaign. With four points from a possible nine, Spurs need the win, but Arsenal, having drawn with Brighton last time out, also need the points, having fallen two behind Manchester City and Liverpool already in the title race.

It is going to be a keenly contested clash, as ever, and creativity will be key. Obviously the performance in both boxes will determine the winners, but creating chances for the frontmen to score will ultimately lead to success or failure in those boxes.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is regularly among the top creators in the Premier League and was joint third in the list for most assists last season with 10.

He is yet to provide an assist so far this season, but his first is surely just around the corner. Tottenham will be hoping it is not against them on Sunday afternoon .

It is not for the want of trying for the Norway international though. He has tried more through balls than any other player in the Premier League this season, playing four in three matches.

His closest challengers are four players with three and one of them is a Tottenham star. But it is a Tottenham star you might not expect.

James Maddison would probably be at the forefront of people's minds, considering he has two assists already this season. The likes of Brennan Johnson and Son Heung-min would be high on the list too, given they had the same number of assists as Odegaard last season - 10.

But it is in fact Cristian Romero. The influential vice-captain has played three through balls this season and even though he is a front foot centre-back, that might come as a shock.

He does not have an assist yet this season, although he does have a goal against Everton, but that first assist, like Odegaard, might not be far away.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham get dream transfer green light as Jonathan David makes admission

Jonathan David says he is open to a move to the Premier League despite being in contract talks with Lille. Chelsea were most-strongly linked with the striker this summer but Arsenal and Tottenham were also connected, with Manchester United in the frame too.

The attacker ultimately stayed on in France as Chelsea acquired Joao Felix and Spurs captured Dominic Solanke while Arsenal refrained from signing a centre-forward. Lille president Olivier Letang gave David his blessing in finding a new club over the summer, and so a January exit could yet be on the cards.

The incentive for Lille to tie David down to a short extension would be to retain his market value, with the attacker in the final year of his contract and able to speak to clubs outside of France from January. The player himself has admitted to speaking to several outfits over the summer.

“There were a couple of offers and we just didn’t finish the deal, that’s it,” he told The Athletic. “I spoke to a couple of teams. I spoke with coaches. But ultimately (I) made the decision to stay.”

There is expected to be increased interest in David in the winter window, whether a deal is signed or not. The 24-year-old only finished behind Kylian Mbappe in Ligue 1’s scorers chart, tallying 19 goals, and has netted three times in seven outings so far this term.

Speaking after assisting the equaliser and scoring the winner for Canada in Saturday’s 2-1 friendly win over the United States, David revealed he was speaking to Lille about said contract extension, adding: “We’ll see how that goes.”

When asked about a potential move away in the future, he detailed: “I’m open to anything. I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best leagues in the world.

“And for me, it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges.”

The Tottenham star already facing suspension risk ahead of North London Derby vs Arsenal

Tottenham are already staring down the barrel of a potential suspension risk, just three games into the new Premier League season.

Spurs have started the season well, although results have not entirely gone their way for the impressive football they have played. The Lilywhites dominated the first half against Leicester City on the opening day, but could only come home with a 1-1 draw.

They did similarly throughout the match against Everton, and this time things went entirely to plan, winning 4-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But it was a tale similar to the one at the King Power Stadium, when they went to St James' Park, dominating for large periods against Newcastle, but going down to a 2-1 defeat.

It leaves Spurs with four points from the first three games, when their performances could easily have garnered a full nine. Next up is the North London Derby at home to Arsenal - always one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season.

And heading into that clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, head coach Ange Postecoglou may already be worrying about a potential suspension risk. All of the talk in the build-up to the match has been around Declan Rice and his absence from the game in N17.

Rice was shown the first red card of his career in the 1-1 draw with Brighton before the international break, in controversial circumstances. The England international nudged the ball away from Joel Veltman as he went to take a quick free-kick and was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Tottenham do not have anyone suspended for the contest, but could run into trouble with a suspension in the coming weeks. That is because midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is already walking something of a suspension tightrope.

Just three games into the season, the Uruguayan has already picked up two yellow cards. Premier League players who pick up five yellow cards in the first half of the season will be suspended for one game, and Bentancur is already almost halfway to that mark.

The fastest player at Tottenham this season and it's not Micky van de Ven

The Premier League season is only three matches in but various Tottenham Hotspur players already feature among the top statistics from the competition.

Spurs have so far secured a mixed bag of results in the English top flight in the 2024/25 campaign with a frustrating 1-1 draw at Leicester, a resounding 4-0 at home against Everton and then a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle despite dominating the game at St James' Park.

The Premier League released a bundle of stats this week and in the main categories of goals and assists, Tottenham have players in joint third with captain Son Heung-min having scored twice and James Maddison having provided two assists.

Spurs can also boast the second fastest player recorded in the Premier League this season so far and it's not Dutch centre-back Micky van de Ven, who topped the race in the competition last time around. At this point in the campaign, it's German winger Timo Werner, who recorded a top speed of 35.69 km/h. He was beaten only by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who was clocked ever so slightly faster at 35.74 km/h.

Son turned up again in another category, coming joint second in shot conversion rate from more than five shots, with 40% of his efforts. He was tied with Brighton's Joao Pedro and Aston Villa's Jhon Duran. That category was topped by Haaland and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo with 50%.

Tottenham have a defender in the most passes completed category with Cristian Romero having made 226 successful passes to place him sixth. City's Manuel Akanji sits top with 289. Romero is also joint second for tackles won in the Premier League so far this season with nine. Leicester's Abdul Fatawu and Fulham's Antonee Robinson lead the way with 12.

The Tottenham vice-captain is also joint second in the league's stats for through balls, having played three, with Arsenal's Martin Odegaard leading the way with four.

Maddison also turns up again in the successful crosses category, coming in sixth place with six. Everton's Dwight McNeil leads the way with 13.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou will be hoping his players will be high up across plenty of the categories as the season goes on because it will mean collectively the club are moving in the right direction.

Arsenal and Tottenham get fresh Eberechi Eze transfer update as Premier League rival joins race

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major blow to their hopes of signing Eberechi Eze. The 26-year-old winger was heavily linked with an exit from Crystal Palace in the summer, but a move failed to materialise.

Eze, who sees his contract at Selhurst Park expire in June 2027, featured 27 times in the Premier League last season, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists. Playing a key role in Oliver Glasner's side, he helped the Eagles pip their rivals, Brighton, to a top-half finish in the Premier League.

After catching Gareth Southgate's eye, Eze was called up to the England squad for the European championships. Despite losing his right-hand man, Michael Olise, to Bayern Munich, the Three Lions international has picked up from where he left off last term.

As a result, he's now attracted interest from Old Trafford, according to the Manchester Evening News. The report states that Eze, whose £68m release clause will activate next year, is among several players that the Red Devils are monitoring as Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his options in the wing.

The Manchester Evening News adds that Manchester United also want to sign a defender and a midfielder. Nevertheless, in an interview with Sky Sports, Steve Parish revealed he was surprised by the lack of interest in Eze during the summer transfer window.

"I was really worried from a club point of view of losing Michael and Ebbs in the same window and we didn't have in Ebbs the interest that I thought we would have," said the Eagles' chairman. "I was astounded. Genuinely astounded. I mean, the guy's just an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person."

Parish added: "We're proud of the fact that Michael Olise's gone to Bayern Munich. We want to be selling to the top clubs, or to clubs like Newcastle who've got great aspirations and have recently been in the Champions League. So we have to manage all of those things. We won't get really great young talent to come to us if they think they're going to be stuck."

Desperate to keep hold of Eze, and Palace's other exciting players, Parish targeted Champions League qualification. He said: "We want to be playing in the Champions League. The reality is we don't right now. That's what players want to achieve in their career and we respect that and we respect the fact that sometimes we're going to be a pathway to that."

Every Tottenham player's contract status as Levy, Lange and Postecoglou face four huge decisions

The summer transfer window is now closed and full focus is on what happens in the Premier League. At least it will be once the dreaded first international break of the season is over.

Ange Postecoglou has cleared the decks at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, getting rid of a lot of deadwood and replacing them with young, hungry stars for now and the future.

Sixteen players left the club, either on loan or permanently during the summer, with six coming in. It has streamlined Postecoglou's squad and given the Australian a bit more balance.

Spurs are likely to do more business in the January transfer window and then again next summer and there will be some more pressing issues to oversee than others when it comes to the group already at the club.

football.london has taken a look at the contract statuses of all the current Tottenham squad and who could be waiting on fresh terms to be offered by the club ahead of transfer talks.

Spurs have six players whose contracts are expiring in the summer of 2025, with one of them a very important one.

Son Heung-min - Let's start there, with the captain. The South Korean's contract comes to an end next summer, but Spurs do retain an option of extending for a further year, which you would expect to happen if they cannot come to an agreement over new and improved terms.

Sergio Reguilon - The Spaniard is not in Postecoglou's plans and had been expected to leave this summer. Will depart the club on a free next summer unless Spurs find a buyer in January.

Ben Davies - Tottenham's 10-year man is also out of contract next summer. He is well-liked in the dressing room, but could he be moving on?

Fraser Forster - Goalkeeper seen as back-up to Guglielmo Vicario. Could get minutes in the cup competitions this year, but it could be his last season in N17.

Aflie Whiteman - Signed a one-year extension this summer and looks to be on something of a rolling deal. One of Spurs' few 'club-trained players' for the Europa League squad.

Timo Werner - On loan from RB Leipzig for the season and will return to the German club at the end of the campaign if Tottenham do not take up the option to sign him permanently.

This is not so much of an issue for Spurs with only two players in this category.

Rodrigo Bentancur - Spurs will be looking to open talks over a new deal with the Uruguayan during this season, if they want to keep him. They risk losing him for a cut-price next summer if they cannot come to an agreement.

Yves Bissouma - Looking good once again at the start of this season under Postecoglou, the Malian will also be one looking for new terms to be offered during the 2024/25 campaign.

These are not pressing issues, but ones Daniel Levy and Johan Lange might have half an eye on, with one player in particular.

Cristian Romero - The important defender has three years left on his current deal but is likely to be one Spurs would like to tie down even longer.

Richarlison - Has been linked with a move away but has stated he is happy where he is. If more offers come in in January or next summer, Spurs are in a good position to sell if they feel that is the right move.

Djed Spence - Rejuvenated somewhat under Postecoglou but has been left out of the Europa League squad. Could drive his price tag up further with some good displays in the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

Five key players here who are tied down to long contracts, which will make Postecoglou and the Spurs fans happy.

James Maddison - £40million signing from Leicester is a bit of a talisman and one of the club's vice-captains.

Dejan Kulusevski - Great signing from Juventus, has taken to Premier League football like a duck to water and can play a variety of positions.

Brennan Johnson - Has shown he has the quality to be a match-winner. The youngster has plenty of time to get better and better.

Pedro Porro - The right-back has made the position his own and is integral to Postecoglou's system.

Guglielmo Vicario - First choice goalkeeper and will not be going anywhere any time soon.

Four players whose futures are well and truly at Tottenham...unless big-money offers come in.

Micky van de Ven - Centre-back who has become a firm fans' favourite. He is going nowhere.

Wilson Odobert - The summer signing that came out of nowhere. Has already proven his quality.

Lucas Bergvall - Slowly integrating into first team football, the 18-year-old has a bright future at the club.

Brandon Austin - One of Spurs' other club-trained players. The goalkeeper looks set to be a lifer.

Big contracts here for some very important players.

Pape Matar Sarr - Just recently signed a new long-term deal. The young midfielder has been a revelation.

Radu Dragusin - May be finding it hard to break the Romero and van de Ven partnership now, but has plenty of years on his side.

Archie Gray - New signing from Leeds he is already being tipped to a be a superstar. Spurs could have signed a gem.

Destiny Udogie - Left-back is only 21 and is tied down to a long contract. Another who is integral to Postecoglou's system.

Tottenham will soon add three players to Ange Postecoglou strongest matchday squad

Description

Ange Postecoglou knows all about not having his best side available to him at Tottenham. Having spent almost all of last season without at least three (and at times many more) of his most important players.

He often turned to previously unwanted and unneeded fringe players. Only able to overhaul part of his first-team group in one summer, a compromise was needed.

For Postecoglou, who would not offer a second way of playing for his team, it left a lot of square pegs in round holes. Players who were not part of the ideal 14-man core group to be used regularly ended up with more minutes than expected.

Ben Davies started 13 league games, playing in 23. At times some of those were at centre-back next to Emerson Royal, who himself got 22 matches, 11 from the off. Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg is a long way from an ideal Postecoglou midfielder, yet he featured in all-but-two of the 38 league matches. There were occasions when Giovani Lo Ceslo was needed as well.

Tottenham's January business - when very few teams could afford to do anything - has helped them strengthen and flesh out a squad that needed more work to come into alignment with Postecoglou's demands. The commitment to ensuring everyone is on the same level, or at least part of the same goal, was demonstrated further this summer.

Oliver Skipp was sold, so was Emerson and Lo Celso. Ivan Perisic and Eric Dier were allowed to walk for free, joining them were Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon, and effectively Hojbjerg, as he leaves on loan after not extending his contract beyond 2025.

Not all of them were around to act as backup for Postecoglou last season but together they represent a changing of the guard. In their place, Spurs doubled down on youth investment with big pressers and speed.

Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke, and Wilson Odobert were all signed. Lucas Bergvall joined after an agreement was reached to bring him in over the winter. It leaves Postecoglou's squad looking much more like a Postecoglou squad should.

The early weeks of the Premier League season haven't necessarily reflected the best of the Australian, though. Forty-five minutes of brilliant football against Leicester City was followed by a second half that carried all the concerns and red flags of the worst of Postecoglou.

He will believe (or hope, or a mixture) that over time this still relatively young group will gel and results like the 4-0 win over Everton flow more continually. Given that just over 12 months ago, ten of the matchday squad against Newcastle had never started a league game for the club, it is no surprise that time will be needed in such a specific and intense Postecoglou playstyle environment.

Even the last match against Newcastle showed the two sides of Tottenham and Postecoglou. Without Solanke, who has only played 90 minutes since moving from Bournemouth due to injury, there are still adjustments to be made.

The striker was close to featuring at St James' Park before the break after missing Everton with an ankle injury. He will be keen to get back into contention for the North London Derby against Arsenal on Sunday.

For Tottenham, it comes with their fierce rivals facing problems of their own heading into the match. Postecoglou will be focused on his own squad though and the addition of Micky van de Ven back into the team would be a huge boost.

He was another who missed out against Newcastle due to a knee knock but will have had two weeks to recover after not being called on by Ronald Koeman for matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany.

There is certainty that Richarlison will be ready. He has struggled with a variety of injury issues in the last 12 months and was dealt a big setback in training before the break. Spurs will hope he can get back to provide support up front in the coming weeks.

What this shows is that with injuries and change to the squad, Postecoglou is still yet to land on his best XI or group available on a matchday. The return of Solanke, Van de Ven, Richarlison, and then continued integration for Gray, Odobert, and Bergvall will leave things in a much stronger position.

Tottenham strongest 20-man matchday squad

Starting XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Maddison, Kulusevski*; Johnson, Solanke, Son

Substitutes: Forster, Dragusin, Gray, Bergvall, Bissouma, Bentancur, Werner, Richarlison, Odobert

*Yes, this is Kulusevski in midfield as a No.8, like Maddison. Tottenham have played their best football so far this season with the pair operating centrally.

Latest Arsenal injury news amid Riccardo Calafiori worry before Tottenham clash

Description

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has several injury worries to deal with in his squad ahead of next Sunday's North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Riccardo Calafiori has withdrawn from the Italy squad in a worrying blow. Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele accidentally caught the Arsenal centre-back on the leg during Friday's Nations League fixture against France with Italy manager Luciano Spaletti substitutingCalafiori in the 71st minute in Paris.

In more reassuring news for the Gunners though, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Calafiori's injury is just a knock and not serious. He claims that the withdrawal was just precautionary.

The news allays fears that Calafiori could join fellow summer signing Mikel Merino on Arsenal's injury list. The midfielder, who sustained a shoulder fracture during his first training session, will have to wait for the conclusion of the October international break before making his debut.

Meanwhile, Takehiro Tomiyasu will miss out on the Tottenham clash as he continues to recover from a knee injury that has sidelined the Japanese defender since pre-season. In more positive news, Gabriel Jesus and Kieran Tierney may return.

Tierney is back in training following his recovery from a hamstring injury which prematurely ended his Euro 2024 participation with Scotland, while Jesus could finally see significant minutes with a groin strain that has limited him to just five minutes of play this season troubling him. His return looks likely post-international break.

There was also a sigh of relief for Jurrien Timber, who has been training with the Dutch squad after being taken off for Arsenal against Brighton due to cramping, according to Arteta. Concerns had arisen over Martin Odegaard as well, but the Norwegian skipper managed to complete a full 90-minute game against Kazakhstan.

Arteta will be desperate to have more players fit within his squad ahead of the Tottenham game. The Gunners drew 1-1 at home to the Seagulls last time out with title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool both maintaining their 100 percent starts to the season.

Arsenal will also be without the suspended Declan Rice for next weekend's fixture against Ange Postecoglou's team.

min contract extension and whether Tottenham will sign free agent this week

Description

A big week lies ahead for Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou as he plays the waiting game with a number of situations.

The Australian is waiting and hoping that all of his Spurs players return fit and healthy from their international exploits ahead of the first North London Derby of the season. He is also waiting to see whether Sergio Reguilon agrees a move away from the club before the Turkish transfer window closes next week and the Tottenham boss is also waiting to see whether Dominic Solanke and Micky van de Ven will be fit to face Arsenal.

As that week begins, our Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold answered your questions about the club and you can find them all below.

josephspursfan: "Are Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke doing fine and are they going to be ready for the North London Derby?"

Alasdair says: "We can only go on Ange Postecoglou's words and he said Dominic Solanke will be ready to face Arsenal. He said last Friday that he was close for Newcastle but they wanted to "err on the side of caution" and had previously dispelled any suggestion he would miss the North London Derby. It sounded the same with Micky van de Ven as he said he was "close in training this week but with the international break he's not quite 100%". With a further two weeks of recovery and work under their belts you would imagine both will be in a position to face Arsenal, but we'll get the final word on Postecoglou on Friday."

alexsmith2000t: "Djed Spence was left out of Tottenham’s Europa League squad, yet impressed in pre-season with his attitude and performances. Is he in Ange’s plans for the future? And why was he left out the Europa League squad?"

Alasdair says: "Spence has done really well this summer and impressed everyone inside the club, including Postecoglou. I think he's just been really unfortunate in that the squad choice would suggest the Spurs boss does not trust his back-up goalkeeper options enough to leave out the experienced Fraser Forster. That means Spence was the odd man out.

"It's a very risky decision because it leaves the defensive cover very light for the group stages. Romero is suspended for the first game against Qarabag and an injury or two more and there's going to be some problems. Spence was able to cover both right and left-back spots.

"How the 24-year-old will react is going to be interesting. He's come on in two of the first three Premier League games and will likely play in the Carabao Cup, so he should still get game time. It's just a massive shame because he would have played a lot in Europe.

"Overall it's a big red flag against the squad management Spurs have overlooked in recent years with not a single outfield club-trained player in the first team now. They have made moves to change that but it's been a problem they should have sorted a long time ago."

Tom: "We've just added the likes of Solanke, Gray, Bergvall and Odobert to the squad. Some great additions but arguably not enough for a team that Ange suggested last season would be part of a title push this year. Realistically how far do you think Spurs can go? I'd love to think we have a real shot at the Europa League and maybe some real pushes in the domestic cups but as a Spurs fan of 30 years, it's the hope that kills you!"

Alasdair says: "I think it's a stronger squad that's far better suited to what Postecoglou wants. Solanke in particular will be the missing piece for me in the Australian's system. He's going to score a lot of goals.

"It's a very young squad, so there will be some inconsistent moments but it's also a squad that Postecoglou can shape into what he wants it to be with good options in most positions, albeit not quite all of them.

"I think the Europa League has to be a strong target. There are some tricky teams in there but no more will drop down from the Champions League now. Overall I'd expect the reverse of last season in that this Spurs squad should get stronger and sharper as the Premier League campaign goes on but it will have the options in plenty of positions now to get through the number of games and injuries.

"I think the results haven't reflected the performances so far, so Spurs are probably going under the radar at the moment. The Arsenal game will be tough but I think there's a lot of exciting displays to come when Postecoglou can get an actual striker, a fit and sharp one, up front in his system."

SimonBadger: "How much rotation do you see happening in the Europa League? Are we seeing Brandon Austin in goal and Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin at centre-back?"

Alasdair said: "I think naturally there will need to be a hefty dose of rotation although much will depend on the opposition. With games every three days for much of the coming months, Postecoglou can't afford to just put out his strongest team in every match otherwise they will tire quickly or even worse, get injured. He has already spoken about keeping his main men fresher this season with more rotation.

"I would think Fraser Forster will play in goal for most of the games, otherwise the decision to include him instead of Spence looks a bit daft. Radu Dragusin will play plenty but Davies may be needed at left-back at times.

"It's a good competition to give Bergvall and Gray - perhaps at right-back - plenty of minutes in as well as others like Timo Werner and the many central midfielders who will be vying for spots in all the games. Richarlison, when he returns, will likely be able to get his sharpness and goalscoring on point in the competition and we'll get to see youngsters like Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear hopefully."

alexthfc: "Given the past links and the Paratici connection, would Adrian Rabiot on a free not be of interest? Appreciate he would come with big wages but we've cleared so much off the wage bill in the last 12 months?"

Alasdair says: "Unless there are any injuries, on international duty or in training, in the next week before the Premier League squad registration needs to be made, I'd be surprised if there was a free agent signing. Mainly because Postecoglou is always talking about not signing short-term, stop-gap players for the sake of having another body. He only wants players that fit his very specific system and if he'd wanted any of the available free agents then they'd have gone for them beforehand. He made a big point when I asked about centre-backs of saying that they didn't just sign anybody because there was nobody available that he wanted. Like I say, I think it would take an injury and big squad cover issues to make them move for anyone with the likes of Rabiot, Martial and Depay out there."

pidgemond: "I know very little about journalism and ‘sources’ but I've always been intrigued about who the sources are at clubs? Are there people at clubs who's actual job it is to provide journalists with snippets of info or is it like my preferred notion of a say a ‘kit man’ or ‘Janitor’ that over hears transfer gossip through a glass cup to their ear against an office wall?"

Alasdair says: "There's definitely not someone with the job of giving journalists info. It would be wonderful if there was! It's just contacts built up over years of covering the game. It can people inside the club in various departments or it can be those outside the club, around the players or staff, or at other clubs who interact with those inside Spurs. The key thing is to piece it all together and always, always double check info with a second source rather than going on something one person says. It's the latter that spews so much rubbish and rumours out across transfer windows in particular as people push agendas or simply misinform."

cal272: "What do you make of Alfie Devine's loan move to Westerlo? Good choice or not?"

Alasdair says: "I think it's the best option that was left on the table. Alfie Devine had plenty of Championship interest this summer but clubs were initially told that he was not available for loan. That changed late in the window when many of those clubs had moved on to other targets. I'm still surprised something wasn't tied up late on before the English window closed, but the Westerlo move is still a good one. The Juliper League will suit Devine's technical ability and give him plenty of minutes and first team experience. He also gets to know Luka Vuskovic and help him prepare for his move to Spurs next year. It will certainly be an interesting club for Spurs fans to keep an eye on."

Alasdair says: "As I mentioned above, I think the decision shows Postecoglou just doesn't have enough trust in their other goalkeepers backing up Vicario and feels he needs Forster's experience. As you say, Austin and Whiteman are club-trained so their involvement doesn't impact other spots. It's pretty harsh on Spence though and leaves holes in the defensive cover. "

AdamJamesHarris: "Are Spurs still open and looking for outside investment?"

Alasdair says: "I don't think that's changed from their initial public statement. Seemingly nothing has yet tempted them enough."

positop: "Do you think that Djed Spence missing out on the Europa League squad will affect him moving forward and does Ange still not believe in him?"

Alasdair says: "Hopefully it doesn't as I'm sure he'll still get minutes in the Premier League and Carabao Cup. I think it's just an unfortunate by-product of Spurs not managing their squad properly over the years and the need for a revamp without having club-trained players ready to step up."

miin: "Do you think Sonny will get a contract extension soon?"

Alasdair says: "I would hope so. Spurs know how much he means to them, he's still a wonderful player in his 30s as well as their biggest star and Son seems to be relishing being the captain. The club have got the security of the extra year option but it's a deal that surely gets done if both parties want it."

impostercoglou: "Alfie Dorrington - do we know how soon he'll be fit again? We might need him in the Europa League as we're a bit short at the back there."

Alasdair says: "Alfie suffered two hamstring injuries last season that hampered his development. He's only just returned to training following the second injury in May, which required surgery, and is yet to play this season. He is expected to be gradually introduced back into matches as this month progresses before hitting his stride again in October as the games come thick and fast. He may well end up getting minutes in Europe with the lack of cover in the months ahead."

Tottenham dealt transfer blow after brutally honest admission

Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi has delivered an honest response amid transfer rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham. football.london have previously reported that Tottenham were big admirers of the Ukraine international before his switch to the Cherries.

After missing one Premier League game under Andoni Iraola across his first full season, Zabarnyi received some rave reviews which has certainly explained why Tottenham and Arsenal were interested in signing him when he was at Dynamo Kyiv.

The Lilywhites have significantly strengthened at centre-back since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, with Radu Dragusin following Micky van de Ven through the door. Despite that, Spurs have been linked to signing another new defender after departures for Eric Dier and Emerson Royal.

Tottenham could rekindle their interest in Zabarnyi over these next few trading periods, although it's likely he will cost much more than the £24million transfer fee Bournemouth paid 18 months ago. However, there's no guarantee that he even wants the move, especially judging by his latest comments regarding his future.

"There have always been rumours, but I haven't talked to my agents about it," he told Dynamo Kiev.UA.

"I'm focused on playing at Bournemouth. Then we'll see, I don't know anything yet."

Zabarnyi has refused to entertain speculation but he could, perhaps, be tempted to make the transfer following Dominic Solanke's big-money switch to north London. The striker was on Tottenham's shortlist with Postecoglou quickly identifying him as a priority target. As a result, negotiations reached an advanced stage with Spurs swiftly wrapping up a £65million deal to sign him from Bournemouth.

Depending on how Solanke gets on over the coming months, having picked up an injury on his debut, Zabarnyi may potentially become keen to join him. The centre-back has played every minute so far in the Premier League, with Bournemouth unbeaten in the first three games.
