Ange Postecoglou reveals sweeping behind the scenes changes at Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou has told football.london that a whole host of summer changes behind the scenes at Tottenham Hotspur have contributed to a fresh feeling at the club.

The Australian has freshened up his coaching staff by countering the departure of assistant boss Chris Davies to become Birmingham City manager by promoting Matt Wells and bringing in two new coaches to Spurs in Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo.

The duo worked together at both Hibernian and Central Coast Mariners, with Montgomery the manager and Raimundo his assistant at both clubs. They won the A-League title with the unfancied Mariners and are now helping Postecoglou and Tottenham.

There have also been changes in the recruitment side of the north London club. Rob Mackenzie is now the head of scouting, having been promoted from chief scout this summer.

His former chief scout position has been taken by Alex Fraser, who joins the growing contingent that have made the move to Tottenham from Aston Villa. Fraser spent almost three years at the Midlands club, having worked previously for Brighton and for a spell seven years ago as a recruitment analyst at Spurs with Mackenzie.

As part of technical director Johan Lange's restructuring of Tottenham's recruitment team, Max Legath was also brought in as a first team scout, having been head of scouting at Basel and before that the chief scout of Bayern Munich's academy.

It's not just in recruitment either that big changes have occurred. Spurs' long time Head of Medicine and Sports Science Geoff Scott has left the club after 20 years. The New Zealander had become a familiar face at matches as a physio and at Hotspur Way.

Both Dejan Kulusevski and Destiny Udogie told football.london during the club's pre-season tour to Asia that they have noticed a change in training sessions this summer compared to last. The Swede felt that more tactical layers were now being given to the players and the Italian believed it was because the Postecoglou philosophy was now ingrained in them so there was more confidence during sessions.

football.london put this to Postecoglou and reminded him that he said last season that first he had to get the players to live and breath and trust his way and then he could add the tactical detail.

The Australian pointed to the whole environment as being responsible for the change, part of which he always looks to engineer.

"Potentially [it's about adding the layers], but I think it's something I've always been conscious of. Everybody says you should feel fresh and it helps we’ve got new staff, new coaches in and new voices, new sport science, new head of medical, so I think that helps, because I have always been a bit wary of players coming back from pre-season and knowing what to expect," he said.

"We want to improve, and if you’re going to improve, you can’t just sort of recap and dish out what we dished out last year, so I like things with a bit of freshness to it, but you do add layers. Obviously, that’s the foundation we built last year, the players have an understanding of our game, and we have to be progressing in the areas we need to."

So what has the arrival of two new coaches and the departure of one meant in terms of changing who does what on the training pitches?

"Nothing too sort of radical. Again, I’m really keen on them working as a team, and they’ve been really good," he said. "I mean, the guys who were here last year have been fantastic in kind of indoctrinating the new boys into how we work and giving them the time to adjust.

"But in that context, I’ve always been sort of encouraging of all of them to take responsibility, and how that gets divided up during the year, we’ll see how that develops, but at the moment we’re working really well.

"Like I said, I think the players are appreciating having a couple of different voices, different skillsets coming into the coaching group, and hopefully that means that the players get more information about what they need to do."

There is the potential for a change to the dynamic though in transplanting a manager and his assistant into the middle of another manager's coaching staff and working under a younger assistant boss. So did Postecoglou have any concerns about that?

"No, not really. I’ve never sort of worried about that stuff. To me, it’s just about what kind of people they are: if they’re the right kind of people, they’ll fit into the structure. Ultimately, I lead that, so it all kind of falls under my responsibility," he said.

"The guys who’ve come in don’t see themselves as the manager, assistant manager, they see themselves as part of a coaching group that will hopefully bring some success to the club, and they want to contribute to that. For all of them, hopefully it’s an opportunity to learn, an opportunity to develop, and as I said, an opportunity to contribute."

Postecoglou's second seasons at clubs are often spectacular affairs with the players having fully bought into his philosophy and with the added extra tactical layers, the goals, points and silverware follow.

The Spurs boss admitted he couldn't say yet how far he is along that process at Tottenham but he feels things are moving in the right direction.

"Look, it’s hard to say, because it’s not something I play up. For me, it’s always just about sticking to the process of what I believe are the things that should be put in a place to be successful," he said.

"I think we laid some basic foundations last year, we’re trying to build on them this year, and the one thing you can’t control is the competition, because they’re doing their own thing.

"From our perspective, it’s about building on the foundations of last year, making sure our players are better prepared this year than last for what’s ahead, and we’ll see where that takes us."

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham player at risk of losing undroppable status ahead of new season

Yves Bissouma watched on from the substitutes' bench for the second game in a row as Tottenham wrapped up their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea. Following victories over Vissel Kobe and Team K League, Spurs this time tasted defeated as Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 victory at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Following that entertaining game against Team K League, Ange Postecoglou made three changes to his starting XI as Radu Dragusin, Djed Spence and James Maddison came into the side. Maddison joined Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr in midfield, with Postecoglou keeping faith with his new signing in the No.6 role.

Initially starting pre-season at centre-back due to the lack of options at the heart of defence, Gray has pushed upfield and into his natural role in the middle of the park in the past two games. His place in midfield has come at the expense of Bissouma, who has instead had to contend with minutes from the bench.

The Mali international has been an undroppable in the Tottenham team ever since Postecoglou's arrival at the club ahead of the 2023/24 season, starting in 26 of the 28 Premier League games when he was available. Outstanding in the first few months of last term, Bissouma's performances did start to tail off from November onwards but he still maintained his place in the starting XI even when he wasn't at the top of his game. That may not be the case from August onwards, however.

The Mali international appears to have real competition for his place in the team from Gray, who has already more than demonstrated in his first few Tottenham appearances that he can be a big player for the Lilywhites over the coming years. Putting in a good display in his first outing in midfield against Team K League, the 18-year-old was given more of a challenge on Saturday coming up against Joshua Kimmich and Co. in the Bayern Munich fixture.

Feeling the impact of the South Korean heat and also a training schedule where Postecoglou and his coaching staff have really pushed the players since their arrival in Asia, Gray, who was even spotted trying to catch his breath at one point in the first half, did struggle in the middle of the park as Bayern controlled proceedings. The Durham-born ace did attempt to get Spurs moving but unfortunately played a couple of loose balls, with one sparking a Bayern attack that resulted in Son Heung-min clearing the ball at the back post as Gabriel Vidovic waited to convert.

An undoubted step up in quality for Tottenham, Gray was not the only Spurs player who struggled to impact the game as he would have liked. Bissouma entered the fray in place of Gray at the start of the second half, with Tottenham much better in the closing stages of the contest as youngsters such as Alfie Devine and Lucas Bergvall came on and influenced the play.

The sides will meet once again next Saturday in what is Tottenham's final summer friendly before the 2024/25 Premier League season commences. Just who Postecoglou decides to start in the No.6 role could potentially drop a hint in regards to who plays there against Leicester City in the team's opening fixture.

A start for Gray and we may well see the youngster make an immediate Premier League debut rather than Postecoglou easing him in to begin with. Regardless of who starts or not, Bissouma does now appear to have a real challenge on his hands for the No.6 role and his previous undroppable tag is certainly not guaranteed, especially if Rodrigo Bentancur is considered for the role as well and rediscovers his form of old.

Maybe not having that last season, it could be something that brings out the very best in Bissouma across the 2024/25 campaign. Postecoglou will be hoping that is the case as he now he builds for a brighter future in north London.

Tottenham Hotspur went down 2-1 to Bayern Munich in the final match of their pre-season tour of Asia and here are our player ratings from the second half.

Ange Postecoglou had handed Djed Spence his first start of pre-season, albeit asking the right-back to play on the left, and he was involved in an early mix-up with Guglielmo Vicario, with the Tottenham goalkeeper under-hitting a pass to the full-back and it was cut out in the Spurs box before Gabriel Vidovic volleyed it through the legs of the Italian.

Leon Goretzka doubled Bayern's lead after his first shot was saved by Vicario but he poked home the follow-up. Spurs grabbed a goal back though with a powerful effort from Pedro Porro that flew past the keeper.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings from the second half as they suffered their first defeat of pre-season.

Guglielmo Vicario

Was unfortunate with the second goal, his first save poked back in by Goretza. A decent second half showing from the Italian until he came off as he'd made a good save before that goal. 6

Pedro Porro

Scored a lovely goal to get Tottenham back into the game, driving forward and smashing a shot past the keeper from outside the box. Played longer than anyone else in a Spurs shirt and worked hard. 8

Emerson Royal

Still continues to give his all for the club despite the links to Milan and he did well in the central role on the whole. 7

Ben Davies

Didn't do much wrong in the centre-back role again. 6

Djed Spence

After that mixed first half, he tried to drive on in the second and created an attack that led to Kulusevski firing just wide. 7

Pape Matar Sarr

Another hard-working performance in the second half before coming off. Was denied by the keeper after having to dig out a shot with Son's ball in front of him. 7

Yves Bissouma

Brought a bit of calm to the midfield and got the assist for Porro's goal. 7

Lucas Bergvall

A very positive performance from the young Swede, with creativity and workrate and he should have scored with a chance he created. 8

Brennan Johnson

Some loose touches and he took a whack halfway through his time in the half which left him hobbling for a while. 4

Dejan Kulusevski

Incredible stamina even when he looks tired. Sent a chance just wide in the half and made one great chase back and interception later on. 7

Son Heung-min

Gave his all down the left even though he was clearly tired, which showed in a pass to Sarr when Spurs broke up the pitch. 6

Subs

Oliver Skipp

Came on in the centre of defence and did well again. 6

Alfie Devine

Another really promising display from the young midfielder who dictated much of the tempo with Bergvall. 8

Jamie Donley

Replaced Spence and other than one early mishit pass, he didn't do much wrong. 6

Timo Werner

Caused some problems but without the quality required. 5

Will Lankshear

Worked hard up top and put himself about around the penalty area. 6

Mikey Moore

Another bright little cameo, again coming on ahead of Solomon. 6

Brandon Austin

Made some really good saves as the half wore on. 8

George Abbott

Replaced Porro for the end stages of the game and did well. 6

Tottenham first half player ratings vs Bayern Munich

Tottenham Hotspur are up against Bayern Munich in the final match of their pre-season tour of Asia and here are our player ratings from the first half.

Spurs were taking on the German giants in Seoul, having arrived from Tokyo, before taking on the Bundesliga side again next week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 10. Former Spurs man Harry Kane will be back for that game but on this occasion ex-Tottenham defender Eric Dier was on the bench.

Postecoglou handed Djed Spence his first start of pre-season, albeit asking the right-back to play on the left of the back four. The 23-year-old was involved in early mix-up with Guglielmo Vicario, with the Tottenham goalkeeper underhitting a pass to the full-back and it was cut out in the Spurs box before eventually Gabriel Vidovic volleyed it through the legs of the Italian.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings from a first half in which Bayern looked like a team that have just turned up in the heat while Spurs have trained hard for a fortnight:

Guglielmo Vicario

Made a mess of the pass to Spence early on and then although he saved the initial shot that came back at him, Vidovic's follow-up went through his legs. He did save from Tel before the 20 minute mark and made a comfortable claim before the break. 5

Pedro Porro

Played a lovely ball into the path of Johnson in the opening stages. Was putting in the yards down the right trying to cover both ends. 6

Radu Dragusin

His first start of pre-season and he showed what having a natural centre-back there was like as he looked steady. He only arrived last weekend and looked fresher because of it. 7

Ben Davies

Back in central defence alongside the young Romanian and had plenty to do alongside him as Bayern swept forward. 6

Djed Spence

His first start of the summer and it came as a left-back. Was involved in the early mix-up with Vicario, which was more the keeper's fault than his own. Looked a little nervy early on but he started to find his composure as the half wore on. Picked up a yellow card five minutes from the break during a clumsy attempt to chase back. Overall he battled away on his unnatural side. 6

Pape Matar Sarr

Looked much better than in recent games and was Spurs' driving force through the centre of the pitch, setting up Kulusevski for an early chance. 7

Archie Gray

Looked knackered at times, with his hands on his hips trying to catch his breath. Played a couple of off-target passes as he tried to get things moving from the number six role. It's easy to forget that this is a whole new level of training for him and especially in this heat as Postecoglou has worked them hard. 5

James Maddison

Quiet for much of the half until late on when he went on a couple of of dribbles. 5

Brennan Johnson

Very little impact on the half from the Wales international. 4

Dejan Kulusevski

Twisted Kim inside out before having a shot blocked early on. Worked hard and took a few knocks. 6

Son Heung-min

The Spurs skipper curled one shot over the bar and made a great interception in his own box midway through the half. Tried to get things going. 6

Score updates as Porro nets after Goretzka and Vidovic goals

Porro scores!

Spurs get one back and it's a lovely goal from Pedro Porro! He smashes a rocket into the net from outside the Bayern box.

Spurs chance

Sarr denied by the keeper after Son plays a ball through. Tired pass from Son in front of him and Kulusevski was struggling to keep up. I'd imagine we'll see a few changes soon.

GOAL!

Goretzka doubles the lead for Bayern after converting past Vicario at the second time of asking.

Tel with the assist for his teammate as the German side add a second of the game.

Close

Spurs go close. Great driving run from Spence through the centre of the pitch before playing it to Son. His shot is blocked by Kulusevski sends the follow-up inches wide.

Wide again

The chances keep on coming for Bayern after some more good play from Kompany's side.

The move ends with Tel poking wide of the target after Vicario had come out to close him down.

Wide

Tel goes very close to doubling Bayern's lead after taking in Vidovic's pass before firing just wide of Vicario's far post.

Moments later Gnabry goes even closer with a curling effort that just goes wide.

A little help

Quick drinks break and senior assistant coach Matt Wells comes over to Djed Spence to give him a few instructions and pointers.

Save

Bayern go close with a powerful effort from Tel that is well saved by Vicario.

The Bundesliga club moved the ball really well there to fashion a chance on goal.

Kulusevski denied

Good interception from Sarr and he raced up the pitch and played it to Kulusevski, who turned inside and out, before having his shot blocked.

GOAL!

Vidovic gives Bayern the lead after only four minutes.

Really poor goal to concede from a Tottenham perspective as Vicario passes to Spence who is under pressure on the edge of the box, with Bayern then winning possession and Vidovic scores after their initial effort was saved.

Players who could still leave before deadline day

August should be a very busy month in the transfer market at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Incomings are certainly needed before the month is out, with Ange Postecoglou desperately needing a new striker if Spurs are to challenge towards the top of the Premier League table.

Outgoings will also take place prior to the 11pm deadline on Friday, August 30 as a host of players currently in N17 either need to leave permanently or secure loan moves to play regularly elsewhere.

But who exactly could depart in August?

Read here.

Hi, Eric!

Eric Dier has had the opportunity to catch up with a number of his former Tottenham teammates ahead of kick-off in Seoul.

Solanke answers Spurs question but only one one condition

It's fair to say that Tottenham supporters are very much split over a potential summer transfer move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

The Lilywhites are understood to have Solanke among their list of potential striker targets with the 26-year-old, who could possibly cost as much as £60million, having scored 21 goals last season for the Cherries.

Solanke very much answers Postecoglou's Tottenham transfer question but only on one specific condition.

Read here.

Davies on Dier reunion

Tottenham come up against a familiar face at Seoul World Cup Stadium today with Eric Dier now a Bayern Munich player.

Although the former Spurs man starts on the bench for the German side, the 30-year-old will very likely come on in the second half against the Lilywhites.

Ben Davies is someone who knows Dier very well after both made the move to north London in the summer of 2014.

You can find out what the Welshman had to say ahead of the match about Dier and also Harry Kane by clicking here.

Guglielmo Vicario explains his new job at Tottenham and makes set pieces claim for next season

Guglielmo Vicario believes he has a new bigger job with more responsibilities within Ange Postecoglou's young Tottenham team this season and has also made it clear that he will not be seeking clarification on set piece rules.

The 27-year-old enjoyed an excellent first season in the Premier League at Spurs, replacing long-term stopper Hugo Lloris with aplomb. Vicario was nominated for the competition's Save of the Month most of the months of the campaign and earned himself a place in Italy's squad at the Euros. He became a growing voice in the Tottenham dressing room and now he admits that he has a new expanded role this season.

That is because Ange Postecoglou's side now have so many talented young players, including new 18-year-old arrivals Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, with plenty of the club's academy starlets impressing as well, 16-year-old Mikey Moore among those starring on the pre-season tour to Japan and South Korea.

Vicario told football.london that his job this season will be to help the team's captains guide the young group.

"Yeah, I'm getting older. I'm one of the oldest players of this group. It's just my second season, but I feel like I have more responsibilities than last season. It has to be like this. I would like to take that. It's a big honour for me also to have this this opportunity to be with and to speak more with the young players," he said.

"So I'm very, very happy with that new role inside the dressing room, but I have always to do that in a humble way and to try to just give them good advice so that they are in a great mind for the team.

"We have a lot of young players who are very talented and we just have to work and follow the the instructions of the gaffer. We all have the same thoughts and the same mindset. So yeah, now we are putting some fuel in our legs during this period. It’s very important as there are very big games ahead. So, we’re trying to find our best for the beginning of the Premier League."

Vicario's experience at the Euros was a new one for him and will have helped his development as a top level goalkeeper, even if the Udine-born stopper did not manage to get any game time in the end as Luciano Spalletti's reigning champions exited at the round of 16 to Switzerland.

"As a human being it was a very, very good experience and it was my first big tournament with my national team," he explained. "I was very proud of that. Of course, the outcome was not great and we know that. We’ll take responsibility and go again in the September games."

One man who caught plenty of people's eyes at the Euros was Radu Dragusin as Romania also battled to the round of 16 with the Spurs centre-back at the heart of their defence.

"Radu is a great player, of course, and also he's a great human being. He's a hard worker. He did very well for Romania and so I'm very happy for him," said Vicario. "They had a big, big tournament, of course, they were not among the favourites, but they won the group and they had a tough game against the Netherlands.

"So for him it has been a good window and now he is back with us and we are ready all together to try to do our best in the new season."

Vicario's one tough spell last season came when teams started targeting him from free-kicks, which led to Tottenham seeking clarification from the PGMOL about what was deemed a foul or not when it came to challenging a goalkeeper. The Spurs stopper sees it all as part of his process when asked what surprised him about life in the Premier League.

"There are some situations you have to face where maybe it takes a bit more time for you to adapt. I can say the set pieces, maybe also the strength of the players and the speed of some of the attacking play," he said. "Of course, it is all about the process. So you have to remain confident in yourself, have to believe in your process, just that of course, and then you have to train a lot, you have to train hard and then get better and better.

"You have to give yourself that time to adapt. You know, life is like this. Sometimes you want to learn something new and you have to give time to yourself to adapt."

On those set pieces he added: "It's a part of the process. Maybe sometimes you don't understand why [there’s a problem] and you don't want to give yourself enough time to adapt, because you want to be ready as soon as you can.

"But I just can say that with a lot of work and, not just personally, but with the team, we can overcome these problems....but these are not problems. It’s about football and we just need to adapt to be ready for the season."

So has Vicario been given any clarification about how much contact is allowed on him at set pieces for the coming season? The answer was unequivocal.

"I don't care. I don't care. It’s about trying to find the best way to deal with that," he said. "So I will be ready this season much more than the last one. I don't want to find excuses and speak about referees. They do their work, I do my work the best way I can."

The Spurs goalkeeper also got a good view in Wednesday night's 4-3 win against Team K League in South Korea of new signing Yang Min-hyeok, who will join the club in January from Gangwon. The 18-year-old winger was up against Vicario in the first half, putting one shot over his crossbar after a mazy dribble.

"Yeah, I just saw him. I think he's a good player, a good prospect for our future," he said. "It’s great that he chose to join us, so we're looking forward to have him in January. Of course for the first month, you have to adapt when you come from another culture. Europe is different, but we are with him and we will try to do our best."

Tottenham predicted team vs Bayern Munich as Postecoglou drops midfield hint

Tottenham will bring a close to their pre-season tour of Asia with part one of their double header against Bayern Munich.

Spurs have won every game so far in Ange Postecoglou's second pre-season with four official friendlies and two behind-closed-doors games and their final game in Seoul is the first friendly match up against the Bundesliga side, the second coming at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 10.

On this occasion in South Korea, Bayern will also be missing a few players, including former Spurs man Harry Kane but ex-Tottenham defender Eric Dier should be available.

Postecoglou will have to be mindful of the workload of some of his players with plenty of double training sessions in the heat and humidity of Tokyo and then South Korea and only three days since the 4-3 win against Team K League on Wednesday evening. Players like Jamie Donley have had a lot of game time, including an hour in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Japan U20s last week.

James Maddison and Yves Bissouma only got 45 minutes in Wednesday's match compared to many other senior players getting an hour in the game. Radu Dragusin got 25 minutes or so of action that night and that could be increased to 45 minutes this time around against the club he rejected to join Tottenham in January.

Postecoglou's midfield could begin to hint more towards the one that will start at Leicester in just over two weeks' time with a decision to potentially be made over whether Archie Gray or Pape Matar Sarr starts this match, while Destiny Udogie should get some minutes in the game after returning to training this week.

Here's the Tottenham team we reckon Postecoglou might select against Bayern: Vicario; Porro, Emerson, Dragusin, Davies; Gray, Bissouma, Maddison; Johnson, Kulusevski, Son.

Will Lankshear and 10 Tottenham players who could still secure transfer moves before deadline day

The final month of the summer transfer window is now upon us. Tottenham have been active in the transfer market ahead of the 2024/25 campaign but more still needs to be done in terms of addressing Ange Postecoglou's playing squad.

Attention is very much on bringing fresh faces in as Spurs look to add that bit more quality that can see them challenge towards the top of the Premier League. Outgoings over the next four weeks are also going to be vital as the 11pm transfer deadline on Friday, August 30 edges ever closer.

So who exactly could leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the month is out? football.london takes a look below.

Sergio Reguilon

Sergio Reguilon is available to find a club for the third year on the trot. Not part of Tottenham's squad for their summer tour and remaining back in the capital to explore potential transfer moves, the left-back is still a Spurs player for the time being.

All concerned would no doubt like a move to be agreed upon sooner rather than later instead of it leaving it until the very last minute.

Richarlison

Richarlison has yet to feature for Tottenham so far in pre-season with injury keeping him on the sidelines. The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia but it would perhaps be more beneficial for Postecoglou to keep him at the club due to what he can offer and also because of the lack of options up front.

Richarlison went on a prolific run of form between December and February last season and Spurs just need to keep him fit after a number of injury issues.

Emerson Royal

Emerson Royal has been heavily tipped to join AC Milan this summer but as of yet he still remains a Tottenham player. The Italian club are going to have to submit an offer that Spurs deem acceptable if they are to lure the right-back to the San Siro.

If not, Emerson could stay in north London and provide cover across defence for Postecoglou.

Giovani Lo Celso

Giovani Lo Celso really needs to secure a move away this summer after playing an extremely bit-part role for the Lilywhites last term. The Argentina international was often only given minutes towards the end of games even though others in his position were struggling.

After impressing for Spanish side Real Betis prior to his Tottenham move in 2019, the Copa America winner has been tipped to return to La Liga.

Manor Solomon

Spurs could possibly also have a decision to make over Manor Solomon before the summer is out, especially if another wide option comes in. It does appear that 16-year-old Mikey Moore may have just nudged ahead of Solomon if Postecoglou's selections in pre-season are anything to go by.

The Israeli's football at Tottenham could potentially be limited this season if that is the case, which in turn could raise questions about his future going into the campaign given Postecoglou has choice on both wings.

Ashley Phillips

Ashley Phillips finished last season playing on loan in the Championship for Plymouth Argyle. With a number of options ahead of him in the pecking order at centre-back, another temporary move could be best for all parties in 2024/25.

Alejo Veliz

Tottenham will be hoping for better luck in the loan department this season if Alejo Veliz is to head elsewhere again. His loan switch to Sevilla proved to be an absolute nightmare and it may have served him better remaining with Tottenham in the second part of last term.

Veliz has just not got a look in during Tottenham's last two summer friendlies, with Will Lankshear appearing to be ahead of him in the pecking order as things stand. For that reason, a loan move would suffice for Veliz.

Dane Scarlett

Dane Scarlett is also in a similar boat to Veliz after not featuring in the Vissel Kobe and Team K League games. The academy graduate barely played in his time on loan with Ipswich Town in 2023/24 and it is vital that Spurs pick the right loan club for him if he is to depart on a temporary basis.

Alfie Devine

Alfie Devine has certainly given Postecoglou something to think about going into the new season after a strong summer campaign. The attacking midfielder looks to have benefitted from his two loan spells and that can be seen in the performances he has delivered so far in pre-season.

While there could be opportunities for him in the Europa League from September onwards, a loan move probably is more worthwhile to him right now so he can play week in, week out.

Will Lankshear

Tottenham youngster Will Lankshear has grabbed the headlines this summer after scoring in the Hearts and Team K League games. His performances have done him no harm at all when it comes to potentially featuring in the first-team squad this season.

As things stand, it probably is beneficial keeping Lankshear at the club due to Tottenham's lack of options in the striker department. However, if the Lilywhites do sign a new frontman then Lankshear could be in line to exit on loan as Spurs do have cover for the position with players such as Son Heung-min, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski able to play there if required.

football.london has previously reported that a long list of clubs in the Championship and across Europe are keen on a loan move for Lankshear. If he is to depart on loan, Tottenham will certainly have options galore for the hotshot.

Jamie Donley

Tottenham will also have plenty of offers for Jamie Donley this summer if he is to exit on loan. After wowing for the club's youngsters in 2023/24, the versatile player has caught the eye in pre-season when playing as a left-back.

Like a host of the other young players at the club, a loan move really would help Donley as he needs to get that experience of playing first-team football week in, week out under his belt.

There is one month of the summer transfer window left. Well, four weeks to be exact. The summer transfer window closes on Friday, August 30.

It has been open for more than two months already and plenty of business has already been completed in the Premier League. At Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou is remaining patient.

But the Spurs boss knows further reinforcements are required, although he is well aware everything will not be fixed to his desires this month, more transfer windows will be required.

Speaking to football.london in South Korea, Postecoglou said: "I don't think it'll all get done [in this window]. I've never believed in quick fixes and I think I said that it would have been great if we had done our business already, but I've always maintained a discipline not to go off and sort of get too emotional through these times.

"It's a difficult time. This is the part of the season where I've probably got the least control over decisions and I've learned to stay disciplined and make sure that we do what we set out to do. We've added the two young guys, but I also think there's been growth from other guys from last year, which naturally makes us stronger this year.

"But yeah, we obviously still got a hand in this window, but I think we'll go beyond this window. This was wasn't just tinkering around the edges when I took over, it needed, you know, a big shift from where it was. I was just thinking about last year's pre-season, you know, I reckon 50% of the people who were on that tour are probably not here now."

So where are Spurs in the transfer window thus far and what still needs to be done? football.london takes a look...

Incomings

Tottenham acted quickly in signing off another season-long loan for Timo Werner, having had the German on loan for the second half of last season from RB Leipzig. He adds much-needed depth in the forward line.

Spurs had already signed one young player in February, upon the turn of his 18th birthday - Lucas Bergvall joining up with his new teammates in July after signing from Djurgarden. And another 18-year-old soon followed.

Spurs beat off competition from a number of other clubs to secure the services of highly-rated midfielder Archie Gray from Leeds United for a fee of around £30million, with Joe Rodon going in the other direction for around £10millino, making it a £40million package for the teenager all told. He is expected to go on to be a superstar and Spurs could very well have got themselves a bargain.

Another 18-year-old - Yang Min-hyeok was also signed from Gangwon FC, but he will not arrive at the club until January 2025, staying with his K-League team until then.

Outgoings

Getting players out of the door was a big thing for Postecoglou to do this summer and he has succeeded in many ways. The aforementioned Rodon headed out to Leeds but he is the only one Spurs have picked up a fee for.

Tanguy Ndombele has his contract cancelled, while Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic's loan moves to Bayern Munich and Hajduk Split respectively turned into permanent deals upon the conclusion of their Spurs contracts.

Bryan Gil has gone out on loan to Girona in La Liga for the season, while Japhet Tanganga and Ryan Sessegnon also left at the expiration of their contracts.

Spurs will get money from the sale of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but he has initially moved on loan to Marseille in France, with that obligation to buy kicking in at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Still to be done

So, with four weeks of the window remaining open, what is still to be completed in N17? Supporters are crying out for a new striker, with Postecoglou admitting it is an area they need to strengthen.

"It's still the area of the park we're really probably the thinnest when I talk about squad-wise at the moment," he admitted when asked about signing a frontman. "So obviously that's a focus for us."

The likes of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres, Lille's Jonathan David and RB Leipzig's Lois Openda have all been linked. They all vary in terms of transfer fee and none would be particularly easy deals to get done.

Signing a striker is of the utmost importance during these final four weeks of the window. Get one - and a good one - through the door and the summer window can be deemed a success.

Richarlison remains at the club despite heavy links with Saudi Arabia, although he remains sidelined through injury - something which has led to Spurs needing to look elsewhere for a forward.

Sergio Reguilon was left at home while the club went on their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea to look for transfer opportunities, and he still needs to move on. Emerson Royal has been linked with a move to AC Milan but remains at the club, with Giovani Lo Celso another who could yet move on.

It's so far, so good, despite there not being too much action in terms of incomings in N17 this summer. A forward will make things even better, while further defensive cover would probably make it an excellent window.

Description

When Antonio Conte left Tottenham in March 2023, it would have been fair to assume there was hardly anyone queuing up to become the club's next head coach.

Quite frankly, Spurs were a mess both on and off the pitch during the first six months of last year with no European football secured for the 2024/25 campaign and yet another interim manager spell occurring. However, Ange Postecoglou has done wonders in just one year with numerous key transfers sealed and the fans wholeheartedly back onside.

There is, of course, still plenty of work to be done with the ongoing trading period and upcoming campaign set to be decisive in his project. Archie Gray and Timo Werner are thus far the only players to have been signed and with just a few weeks remaining of the summer window, the Lilywhites want more reinforcements.

So, with that being said, football.london has taken a look at how Postecoglou can navigate the next few weeks alongside technical director Johan Lange.

Sign Gyokeres

Though £86million is a significant amount of money, there is surely no doubt that Gyokeres would make it worth every penny.

Having scored a staggering 43 goals last season for Sporting CP, there is perhaps no better striker for Spurs and Postecoglou than the Sweden international. Links to Jonathan David and Dominic Solanke make sense, as cheaper but still quality alternatives to Gyokeres, however it is so crucial Spurs spend big in this position to make the next step.

From Postecoglou's own comments, it is abundantly clear he knows that is where further depth is needed but rather than signing an understudy, break the bank and acquire the services of a true marksman to propel Spurs forward.

Win Eze transfer race

This may be asking a lot, but if Tottenham can also convince Eberechi Eze to join from Crystal Palace, we would be looking at an all-timer transfer window. Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been linked to the England international, though Spurs appear best-placed to acquire his signature.

It would create somewhat of a starting XI dilemma but to actually compete with the top teams, quality depth is needed and those sorts of decisions would be a luxury.

Last summer, many Tottenham fans believed the addition of James Maddison was big and thus signing Eze 12 months is a real statement of intent. It could cost Daniel Levy upwards of £65million, with that value said to be in the region of his release clause, but you pay big money for the best players and it is about time that Tottenham really started acting like a big club.

Complete at least four exits

Tottenham would likely need at least £150million to sign both Eze and Gyokeres. So, to make that far easier to stomach, some first-team exits will be needed.

Joe Rodon and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have already sealed moves to Leeds United and Marseille, respectively. However, plenty more will be required to further trim Postecoglou's squad with Emerson Royal to AC Milan transfer talks ongoing.

Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon are others that will be moved on but the big funds will arrive with a departure for Richarlison. If Gyokeres comes in, with Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski able to play centrally, parting ways with Richarlison is acceptable especially if a significant offer arrives.
