Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham side officially get their 2024 pre-season fixtures underway on Wednesday evening when they travel to Edinburgh to take on Hearts. Back at their Hotspur Way base for just over a week now, Spurs did in fact play a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side Cambridge United last Saturday.

The Tottenham boss did elect to use a different team in each half, with those playing in the first half running out 5-0 winners and those involved in the second 45 minutes playing out a 2-2 draw. Brennan Johnson hit a hat-trick in the first half as Son Heung-min added a brace, with Spurs youngster Mikey Moore netting after the break when operating on the right-wing.

The behind-closed-doors game at Hotspur Way did give new signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall the opportunity to play alongside their Tottenham teammates in a game for the very first time. Timo Werner, who has rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan, also featured in the match and forced the other goal in the second half.

Playing their first official pre-season match against Hearts at Tynecastle on Wednesday, it will give Postecoglou the opportunity to take a closer look at his players as they prepare for the new season. The games will start coming thick and fast for the team once they have played in the Scottish capital, with a trip to QPR on the calendar for Saturday before they head off on their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

Postecoglou is going to have the vast majority of his players available for the Hearts encounter but a handful will be missing due to their international participation this summer. Destiny Udogie is not expected to be fit to play just yet after undergoing surgery to his left quadriceps towards the end of last season, with question marks over Richarlison's fitness levels at present after he also sat out games in the final few weeks of 2023/24.

The Brazilian was spotted watching on at the training ground from the bench for the Cambridge fixture, although it unclear whether he entered the fray at any point after his recent injury rehab work. Postecoglou does have a number of options in the attacking areas as things stand, though, with Alejo Veliz and Dane Scarlett also potential candidates to start through the middle.

Tottenham reject two Emerson Royal transfer bids as AC Milan offer revealed

Tottenham have let a number of players leave the club already this summer. But they have only made money from one of them.

Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic, who went on loan for the second half of last season, came to the ends of their contracts, signing permanent deals with Bayern Munich and Hajduk Split respectively. Ryan Sessegnon did not have the option for an extra year taken up by Spurs, while Japhet Tanganga also left at the expiration of his deal.

Tottenham also came to a mutual agreement with Tanguy Ndombele to end his contract a year early. The only one Spurs have made money on has been Joe Rodon, leaving for Leeds United in a £10million deal, although, while separate, it did count towards the deal to bring Archie Gray to N17.

More players are expected to leave, with the likes of Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon not having a future under Ange Postecoglou and players like Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal looking at other options for more game time.

Royal is one who had looked set to be on the move earlier than others, with plenty of interest from abroad in his services. Italian giants AC Milan have been heavily linked, but as yet have not been able to get a deal over the line.

And football.london can reveal that is because their bids for the defender come nowhere nears Spurs' valuation of the Brazilian.

Tottenham are looking for a fee in the region of £20million to sell the 25-year-old, who cost the club around £25million back in 2021. Milan do not see him in that price bracket it seems though.

football.london reporter Alasdair Gold has revealed that AC Milan have made two bids for the defender - well, one really because both bids were for the same amount. They made one verbal offer and one formal offer. That bid was for £8.4million.

Tottenham rejected the verbal bid, then rejecting the formal offer too, which is hardly surprising given it was the same figure. Borussia Dortmund are also interested in the full-back, who filled in at centre-back last season too.

Archie Gray has been settling in well so far and impressing following his £40million move from Leeds to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 18-year-old played 52 times last season for Leeds and was named Championship Young Player of the Season before arriving at Spurs this month in a deal which saw Joe Rodon head in the opposite direction. Gray is naturally a central midfielder but played much of last season at right-back, a position Ange Postecoglou used him in during the second half of a behind-closed-door friendly against Cambridge United on Saturday.

However, Gray's future is expected to lie in the heart of midfield and football.london understands that the teenager has already been impressing Postecoglou and his coaches with his efforts in the opening week or so of pre-season training. He was joined this summer by another new face in fellow 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall, with the Swede also looking to make a big impact in his first season in the Premier League following his £8.5million move from Djurgarden in February.

Our Spurs correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest discussed the duo and exactly what happened in the behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday afternoon in the latest episode of their podcast Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham. The reporters also spoke about Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso's Copa America triumph as well as the latest with Dele Alli after Spurs agreed a deal with Everton regarding their former midfielder.

The duo also spoke about the north London club's need to start getting more transfers through the door ahead of the pre-season tour to Asia next week. Postecoglou and the team travel to Edinburgh first to face Hearts on Wednesday before taking on QPR on Saturday afternoon.

Description

Ange Postecoglou returns to Scotland on Wednesday as Tottenham officially begin their pre-season schedule with a match at Heart of Midlothian.

Postecoglou spent two years in Glasgow at Celtic, winning five trophies in two seasons including the domestic treble in his final year. Now he will return across the border to take his Spurs side to Edinburgh for a friendly game at Tynecastle Park on Wednesday evening as they prepare for the new Premier League season.

While Cristian Romero, Giovani Lo Celso, Rodrigo Bentancur, Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Guglielmo Vicario have all been given time off after their experiences at the Copa America and Euro 2024, Postecoglou will still have a strong squad to take on the flight up to Scotland.

Spurs played a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon in which two different Tottenham XIs played in each half, winning the first 5-0 and drawing the second period 2-2. Barring any knocks or reactions from that match, you can assume that the bulk of those players involved in that training ground game will be in the squad to face Hearts.

New summer arrivals Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall both played, as did Timo Werner, who has had his loan spell at the club extended for another season. in the first half, Brennan Johnson scored a hat-trick, while captain Son Heung-min netted twice. Youngster Mikey Moore scored his first goal for the seniors in a right-wing role in the second period, while Werner forced the other goal in that half.

Pedro Porro, Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski all played in the first half while Manor Solomon also got his first minutes of 2024 following his knee issues last season. James Maddison, Werner, Oliver Skipp and Emerson Royal were among those playing in the second half line-up as Postecoglou mixed up the teams.

Alejo Veliz, Dane Scarlett, Ashley Phillips, Alfie Devine, Pape Matar Sarr and Ben Davies are all likely to be included again, while Bryan Gil could also feature despite suggestions that he will depart Tottenham this summer.

Richarlison was spotted watching on at the training ground from the bench, although it unclear whether he entered the fray at any point after his recent injury rehab work. Destiny Udogie is not expected to be fit yet to play as he continues his rehabilitation following his surgery to his left quadriceps towards the end of last season.

Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon have been training with the squad this pre-season but were not included in the game against Cambridge, with their futures lying elsewhere, which would suggest they will not be involved in Edinburgh.

Plenty of youngsters played against Cambridge and Postecoglou will have to decide how many of them need to come with to Scotland. Jamie Donley is believed to have done a fine job in filling as a left-back, but has been linked with a loan move away, while the highly-rated centre-back Jun'ai Byfield, who only turned 16 in March but has been impressing many within the academy, also got a chance to play in front of Postecoglou due to the defensive absences.

Tyrese Hall, George Abbott and Luca Gunter were also among those involved from the Under-21s, along with Yago Santiago and Max Robson.

Postecoglou will have plenty of decisions to make over which players will make the flight with the likelihood that two different Spurs XIs will feature during the game.

Club chief makes Tottenham transfer admission on coveted midfielder

Description

Galatasaray deputy chairman Ibrahim Hatipoglu has said that Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has a lot of potential transfer suitors so his departure this summer from north London could take a while.

The 28-year-old impressed this summer as Denmark reached the round of 16 at Euro 2024, including a man-of-the-match performance against England in Frankfurt. Hojbjerg's value in the final year of his contract will remain high despite relatively few Premier League starts for Tottenham last season because of his tournament displays and the interest in him from potential suitors is equally high as he looks to move on this summer.

The Dane started just eight Premier League matches last season, having been a near ever-present previously since his arrival from Southampton in the summer of 2020. Ange Postecoglou used the experienced midfielder 39 times across the campaign but mostly late in matches to shore things up.

Hojbjerg is expected to move on this summer and Galatasaray are one of the interested parties. Hatipoglu believes that the Spurs man will take his time in deciding the next step in his career.

"Hojbjerg is a very good player. He has many suitors. He says he wants to make a decision after seeing all the options. He may take more time than the others," the Galatasaray supremo said in an interview with CNN Turkey.

Galatasaray signed a midfielder from Tottenham last summer in the shape of Tanguy Ndombele. However, that loan spell proved to be a disastrous one and the Frenchman returned in May after starting only a handful of matches. He and Spurs subsequently agreed a mutual termination of the remaining year of his contract and he has now signed for Nice as a free agent.

Ranking Tottenham's players at Euro 2024 and Copa America

Description

Euro 2024 and the Copa America have now come to an end and so has the involvement of Tottenham Hotspur's players.

Some enjoyed plenty of game time at the two tournaments while others had fewer minutes on the pitch and one none at all. A couple of players lifted the biggest prize on offer to them while others reached the latter stages and some simply gained major recognition for their efforts across the competitions.

We've taken on the tough task of creating a power rankings of sorts for Spurs' players at those tournaments, which is certainly up for plenty of debate depending on how you want to judge what they achieved, whether it's in how far they got in their tournament, their contributions on the pitch or their performances throughout.

Here's our attempt, judged purely on what took place on the pitch:

Cristian Romero

The man at the top - Tottenham's vice-captain. Romero has had an incredible few years at international level, winning the World Cup, lifting the Copa America and now retaining it as well as also winning the Finalissima in 2022, when the Copa America and Euros winners did battle at Wembley.

Romero started five of Argentina's six matches at the Copa America this summer, only rested in the final group stage match with knockout stage qualification already assured. The 26-year-old Argentine played the full 120 minutes of the final against Colombia and lifted the trophy at its end.

Lionel Messi believes Romero is the best centre-back in the world, and who are we to argue?

Giovani Lo Celso

He struggled to get game time at Tottenham but Lo Celso made up for his World Cup injury heartbreak by coming on in extra-time in the Copa America final to provide a first time pass into the run of Lautaro Martinez to score the winning goal against Colombia.

The 28-year-old midfielder only started one match during the competition - that final group stage win against Peru - and got 149 minutes or so under his belt overall, but he made positive contributions and the most important one with that assist on the biggest stage in the 112th minute to ensure he has now lifted back-to-back Copa America titles.

Radu Dragusin

Perhaps a controversial choice to go in at number three as Romania only reached the round of 16 but of all of Tottenham's players, the 22-year-old centre-back will likely return to the club with the biggest boost to his global reputation following Euro 2024.

Dragusin was superb throughout his first major tournament, helping Romania return to the big stage with their run to the knockout stages and the young defender played every minute of it for them.

He got plaudit after plaudit for his performances as the rock in the Romanian backline and with boss Ange Postecoglou watching on as a pundit he won't have failed to further impress the Australian.

Rodrigo Bentancur

Remember we're just ranking this based on matters on the pitch. What happened after Uruguay's semi-final against Colombia is now in the hands of CONMEBOL to decide upon.

When it comes to on-pitch matters, Bentancur could easily have take third spot in this table as Uruguay did just that at the Copa America. After an injury-hit season, the 27-year-old started only two matches for his country at the tournament, coming off 34 minutes into the semi-final with an injury.

However, he did make an impact, scoring twice, including in the third-place play-off against Canada after making a big effort to return from his semi-final injury. In that third-place decider Bentancur also netted in the penalty shoot-out, as he did against Brazil in the quarter-finals, so he played his part for his country.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Another player who could easily be higher up these rankings following an impressive run of performances as Denmark reached the round of 16 at Euro 2024.

The 28-year-old midfielder was an all-action star for his country, including a man-of-the-match performance against England in Frankfurt.

Hojbjerg's value in the final year of his contract will remain high despite so few Premier League starts for Tottenham last season because of his tournament displays and the interest in him from potential suitors is equally high as he looks to move on this summer.

Micky van de Ven

Again, it feels incredibly harsh to place the young Dutchman this far down the list when he reached the semi-finals of the Euros, but this was just his first tournament after only four appearances for his country going into it, and we have no doubt that the speedy centre-back will have a bigger part to play in future competitions.

The 23-year-old made four appearances from the bench, totalling 66 minutes, and some of his compatriots might have been wondering if he'd been used in the semi-final against England whether he would have outpaced Ollie Watkins and prevented that late winner for Gareth Southgate's men.

There is plenty more to come for Van de Ven on the international stage in the years ahead.

Guglielmo Vicario

Another player making his tournament debut was Vicario. Having only made two appearances for Italy in the build-up to the tournament, the 27-year-old would watch on from the bench for the competition as Gianluigi Donnarumma remained the man between the sticks for the Italians as they reached the round of 16.

Vicario will get his chances in the seasons to come and he got a great experience of tournament life while remaining fresh for Spurs' season ahead.

Harry Kane knows only one thing will silence doubters as Tottenham legend endures Euro 2024 pain

Description

Harry Kane might have ended up sharing the Euro 2024 Golden Boot but England's captain and record goalscorer will know that the question marks around him this time were mostly justified.

Kane cut a forlorn figure at the final whistle in Berlin on Sunday night as England were left heartbroken once again as the losing finalists in consecutive European Championships. Gareth Southgate's men had given themselves a chance, but on this occasion it had little to do with their previously talismanic skipper.

They hit back after Nico Williams' second half goal with substitute Cole Palmer's low strike from outside the box. It was not enough though as in the final five minutes, Mikel Oyarzabal popped up in the box with the winning goal for Spain.

Kane struggled on the night in Germany. He managed just 13 touches of the ball, won only two aerial duels and just five of his 10 passes reached their intended target and his one shot towards goal was blocked. The England captain was taken off on the hour mark by Southgate and replaced by Ollie Watkins and England's record goalscorer could have few complaints after a forgettable 60 minutes.

Kane's display means that in the 181 minutes he played across both the Euro 2020 and 2024 finals, the England striker had just one shot, one touch in the opposition box and managed just 58 touches of the ball in total.

Yet with just three goals in the tournament, the 30-year-old still ended up with the top scorer prize as UEFA decided it would be shared. So he will be awarded it with Dani Olmo, Cody Gakpo, Georges Mikautadze, Jamal Musiala and Ivan Schranz. For Kane to have his name on it means that joins Gerd Muller as the only two players to have finished as the top scorer at a World Cup and a European Championship.

Yet the individual awards are not what Kane was seeking in Germany this summer and he may well know that Muller won both the World Cup and European Championships on top of his personal accolades.

This was a tournament in which the country looked towards Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer rather than Kane for their inspiration and Watkins after his dramatic semi-final winner.

For Kane, he did not look right or seem to move freely throughout the tournament. The back injury that hampered the end of a first season in Munich that brought 44 goals in 45 games and 12 assists perhaps was still an issue or if not, the missed games in the month before the tournament could explain a lack of sharpness but not mobility. Southgate mentioned after the final that those missed matches left Kane not in the condition he would have wanted to be in.

Others will point towards Southgate's system and question whether it got the most out of Kane, one of the world's best goalscorers. Tottenham supporters will know that the energetic, high pressing Kane of old became more selective with that sort of movement in later seasons following repeated ankle injuries and a serious hamstring one.

Kane became more and more impactful as a deeper lying playmaker, with fast runners around him, who he could either provide the assists for or the passes to get them behind the defence and then he could sweep in the box for the return ball.

Kane is one of the best finishers around and that is why Spurs and England's record goalscorer managed to smash records with his goals at Bayern. It's what he does. He has won not only the Golden Boot at the World Cup and Euros, but also in the Premier League (three times), Bundesliga and Champions League as well as the Golden Shoe as Europe's top goalscorer.

Kane has scored 351 goals in his senior club career with another 66 for England, making it a ridiculous 417 times he's hit the net for club and country. So there is no doubting his quality in the final third.

What people will continue to question though are his performances in the big matches at the business end of tournaments. Kane has come so close so many times and sometimes, like this year, injuries and a lack of sharpness have played a part and sometimes he has played his part but others haven't. Sometimes he's been part of a sub-par team performance but understandably people look to him to drag his side through the big matches as he does the other ones.

The doubts will linger about his impact in big matches until he wins a trophy. It won't matter that this month he became the leading European scorer in knockout matches in both European Championship and World Cup history with nine goals in 14 matches.

He has contributed in some big tournament games. The England captain netted in extra-time at Wembley against Denmark in the semi-final at Euro 2020 to send his country through to the final. That day he was knocking in the rebound from his saved penalty but he was more clinical from the spot at the same stage this time around against the Netherlands earlier this week.

At club level, his most recent big games came for Bayern Munich with the Champions League semi-final legs against Real Madrid. The German side might have lost out 4-3 on aggregate across the two games but it was not for the want of trying from Kane, who provided a goal in the first leg and an assist in the second.

Bayern had the rarest of seasons in that they didn't win anything in the 2023/24 campaign, only giving ammunition to the Kane critics with him becoming some kind of trophy jinx. Others will see it that Kane was one of the few top quality things about the Bavarian giants last season.

During his time at Tottenham, most will point to that night in Madrid in June 2019, when the north London side lost to Liverpool in the Champions League final.

Kane looked exactly what he was - a rusty player who had been brought back straight into the starting line-up after two months out injured. His inclusion was harsh on Lucas Moura, who had scored that dramatic hat-trick in the semi-final second leg at Ajax, but very few managers in the world would have left Kane out of the starting line-up if he was considered fit. The striker's lack of impact that night is often highlighted while his team-mates, who had no excuses for their lifeless displays, were able to escape in his shadow.

His other two finals were League Cup ones for Spurs, unable to score against Chelsea or Manchester City in those games at Wembley.

Kane had eight domestic cup semi-finals in all while at Tottenham, including a couple of double-legged League Cup ones. He netted two goals and provided one assist in those matches.

Sunday's final and his inability to play much of a role will only add to the question marks. Harry Kane will respond with goals as he always does, but it is only the gleam of silverware that will silence the doubters.

Ange Postecoglou may still have role for forgotten Tottenham man in 2024/25 Premier League plans

Description

Manor Solomon was back on the pitch for Tottenham on Saturday as they played a behind-closed-doors game against Cambridge United at their Hotspur Way base. Ange Postecoglou's Spurs squad do have a busy pre-season schedule on the agenda, with the team officially kicking things off on Wednesday evening as they travel to Edinburgh to take on Scottish Premiership side Hearts.

However, following their first week back at the club's training ground, Postecoglou was keen to put his team through their paces against the League One side. It turned out to be a productive afternoon for all concerned with plenty of players getting a various amount of minutes in the tank.

Due to the wealth of numbers available to the head coach at present despite a handful of the squad still to return to training following their participation at either Euro 2024 or the Copa America, the Australian put out a different team in either half against Garry Monk's side.

The team in the first half ran out 5-0 winners, with those utilised in the second half playing out a 2-2 draw. For Solomon, he played in the opening 45 minutes as Brennan Johnson scored a hat-trick and Son Heung-min added a double.

Since sealing a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 12 months ago, the 24-year-old has played an extremely bit-part role for the Lilywhites with injury severely restricting his playing time. In total, the Israel winger has only featured in six games for Spurs after suffering a meniscus injury to his right knee in training in early October.

Initially looking at between three to four months on the sidelines before Postecoglou revealed in February that his player had sustained a setback in his recovery, Spurs confirmed midway through March that Solomon had undergone surgery on the issue and that he would continue his rehabilitation with the medical team.

Following such a difficult time for the player with his last appearance coming off the bench in September's last-minute 2-1 victory over Liverpool, his return to the pitch in the behind-closed-doors friendly would have come as a big weight off his shoulders. Solomon will now be looking to add to his minutes in the weeks ahead, starting with Wednesday's pre-season friendly against Hearts at Tynecastle before Tottenham then face QPR three days later.

Looking bright for Tottenham last summer immediately after his move to the club, Solomon once again needs a strong pre-season if he is to become a key player in Postecoglou's team going forward. A lot has changed in Tottenham's attack since he last pulled on a Spurs shirt in that win against Liverpool.

Sign up to our Tottenham WhatsApp service and get all the latest breaking news and in-depth stories from football.london's dedicated Tottenham writers direct to your phone by clicking this link.

Johnson, who was in the first few weeks of his Tottenham career at the time of Solomon's last outing, has become a regular in Postecoglou's side and contributed with five goals and ten assists in his maiden year at the club. Spurs also now have Timo Werner on the books after he rejoined the Lilywhites on a season-long loan after impressing in his initial loan switch from RB Leipzig in the second half of last season.

There could even be more attacking incomings still to come between now and the end of the summer, with Postecoglou previously admitting to football.london that bringing in new attacking players is a priority for him in the summer market. A lot has changed in Tottenham's attack since Solomon's last official appearance and there's the real possibility that things could look a whole lot different once again by the time the 2024/25 Premier League starts.

It perhaps doesn't come as a surprise then that there have been question marks over Solomon's place in Postecoglou's Tottenham plans for the season ahead. Going to be a tough ask for him to force his way into the Spurs XI on a permanent basis given the options at the head coach's disposal, a strong pre-season campaign could remind everyone of just what the winger can offer Tottenham in the months ahead.

Perhaps Tottenham's forgotten man for many due to the fact he only played six times in his first year at the club, now is the time for Solomon to ensure he is at the forefront of Postecoglou's mind as he plans for the forthcoming season.
