James Maddison has recommitted his future to Tottenham Hotspur on the same day he signed for the club 12 months ago.

Maddison, 27, joined Spurs from Leicester City on June 28 last year for £40 million. The attacking midfielder agreed a five-year contract with the club until 2028.

During an injury-affected first season, Maddison made 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting another nine. He missed 11 matches during three months out with an ankle injury, with his drop in form following that setback ultimately costing Maddison a place in the England squad for the European Championship.

He acknowledged that in a post earlier this month after being told the news. "Devastated doesn’t quite cut it," Maddison shared in identical posts on Instagram and X, formerly Twitter. "Trained well and worked hard all week, but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set, which gave Gareth a decision to make."

But three weeks on, Maddision has marked his first anniversary of becoming a Tottenham player on social media. The club's official account posted a 30-second-long reel, captioned 12 months of Madders, which the player added to his story.

Maddison captioned the post: "1 year flew by. Can't wait for the next 12 months," punctuated by a white heart, the same as the club used in their caption. It is not the first time he has engaged with the club's Instagram account this summer.

Hall to Chelsea transfer hands Ange Postecoglou perfect Tottenham chance

Chelsea may be set to add to their squad over the coming days with the signing of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City. football.london understands that the Blues have made their move for the talented midfielder after a sparkling season under new boss Enzo Maresca during their time together at the King Power Stadium.

The 25-year-old was a pivotal figure in the Foxes' Championship title success, registering 12 goals and 15 assists as the team pipped Ipswich Town to the league title. Brighton & Hove Albion were winning the race for the Leicester academy graduate but it is now the west London club who have moved to the front of the queue for the player.

Leicester are said to be open to selling their academy product as they come under huge pressure to abide with the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) this summer. Already having a number of options in midfield as things stand, Dewsbury-Hall moving to Stamford Bridge could potentially pave the way for Conor Gallagher to exit the club.

The England international's future once again remains up in the air amid plenty of speculation 12 months ago that he would depart Chelsea. A move away never came to fruition, though, and he instead became an integral part of Mauricio Pochettino's side and even captained the Blues on a number of occasions.

Gallagher's future once again remains a big talking point this summer, especially due to the fact that Monday will mark the beginning of the final year of his Chelsea contract. If he is not to be part of Maresca's plans at Chelsea for the 2024/25 term, last season's Carabao Cup finalists will need to part with the midfielder before the summer transfer deadline or else they run the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer.

If Gallagher is to bid farewell to Chelsea, he will certainly have a number of options available to him after making quite the impression in the Premier League. The England international is a player of interest to Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou is a big fan of the Chelsea ace.

Midfield is a position Tottenham need to look at this summer and the Epsom-born player would certainly provide them with more quality in the central areas. Chelsea and Tottenham tend not to deal with one another but an attractive offer from the latter could prove too good for their London rivals to turn down.

Whereas Dewsbury-Hall could make the move to Chelsea over the coming days if an agreement between both clubs can be struck, Gallagher's participation at Euro 2024 in Germany may mean that his future is resolved one way or another once England's time at the tournament has come to an end. As well as interest in Gallagher, Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey is another player who has been linked with Tottenham as they look to bolster their midfield options.

Tottenham given £50m Jacob Ramsey transfer hope as Ange Postecoglou plots midfield overhaul

There is a growing feeling that Jacob Ramsey could be prised away from Aston Villa by a bid of up to £50million, football.london understands, as Tottenham look to strengthen Ange Postecoglou's midfield options ahead of a big season.

Spurs are expected to make a few midfield changes this summer with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso among those set to depart the club in the wake of Tanguy Ndombele's release. Postecoglou is keen to bring in new faces to provide fresh energy and creativity in the centre of the pitch to complement the likes of James Maddison, Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr and Oliver Skipp, who is looking for regular football next season, with Dejan Kulusevski also able to play in a deeper role.

Lucas Bergvall arrives next week following his £8.5million switch from Djurgarden with Tottenham snapping up one of Scandinavia's brightest young talents in the 18-year-old Sweden international, who can play as a number eight or in more advanced roles.

Postecoglou and Spurs technical director Johan Lange have compiled a list of potential midfielders to bring in to bolster the Australian's options as the north London club add Europa League fixtures to their Premier League ones as well as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in a busy season.

Lange has been driving Tottenham's interest in Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey. The Dane is a big fan of the midfielder, who turned 23 last month, and Tottenham made enquiries in January, soon after Lange's arrival at the club, about the availability of the player who can play in the centre of midfield or on the left. Postecoglou is understood to also feel the player would fit his system well.

Spurs' interest in Ramsey, who has three years left on his contract at Villa Park, has not dulled despite his injury-hit season, and the north London club have enquired again about his availability this month with Villa, although suggestions of a formal offer being made yet have been played down on various sides.

Tottenham have probed to see whether Ramsey's fragmented campaign loosened Villa's desire to keep him in the face of a tempting offer, particularly with their previous need to get back within the profit and sustainability rules which the sale of Douglas Luiz to Juventus is now expected to remedy.

The initial indications were that the Midlands side, who will play Champions League football next season, were as unlikely to sell Ramsey as they did back in January. However, football.london understands that there is now a growing feeling that a bid of between £40million and £50million could yet prise him away if the player chose to leave his hometown club.

Tottenham also retain a strong interest in England midfielder Conor Gallagher. The 24-year-old played 50 games for Chelsea last season, the majority of them as captain under Mauricio Pochettino, but as of yet the Blues still have not entered into official talks over a new contract for the midfielder despite him having only 12 months left on his current deal.

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca also appears to be looking to bring his former Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with him to Stamford Bridge after a sparkling season in the Championship. What that potential move means for Gallagher's game time remains to be seen, with the Blues player having spoken publicly about wanting to stay at the club.

Postecoglou is known to be a big admirer of Gallagher. During his recent ITV stint as a pundit at Euro 2024, the Australian spoke about Gallagher's energy and how good he is at retaining the ball.

Across London but also within the England camp and the noises coming out of Crystal Palace are a growing insistence that Eberechi Eze is not for sale this summer following the impending departure of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich. That would appear to suggest that the reported release clause in Eze's deal is more complicated than initially thought.

football.london also understands that Tottenham also have an interest in highly-rated Rennes midfielder Desire Doue, who turned 19 this month.

The versatile French midfielder is being watched by many of Europe's top sides and can play anywhere across the midfield, having turned out in the centre of midfield as well as on both the left wing and right wing at times over the recent campaign in Ligue 1. The teenager became more of a regular starter in the second half of the season and managed eight goal involvements in the final 19 matches.

Another talented teenager Tottenham have a firm interest in is Leeds United's Archie Gray. The 18-year-old is rated as one of the brightest young players in the country right now, and has already been namedchecked by England boss Gareth Southgate. The teenager is mainly a central midfielder, but played much of last season to great effect as a right-back, which would mark him out as a potential inverted right-back in Postecoglou's system.

As with Doue, many of Europe's top sides are tracking the availability of Gray, with Leeds needing to raise money this summer but believed to be loathe to lose the popular academy product, who has been valued at around £50million and played 50 matches for them last season as they missed out on promotion after losing the play-off final to Southampton.

There are further options on Lange's midfield shortlist as Tottenham look to lean heavily on data-driven transfers, something Postecoglou was also keen to push this summer, to ensure that those chosen fit his system perfectly to avoid the expensive errors of the past.

Ramsey deal, Kane replacement, Hojbjerg and Lo Celso exit

Description

It has been a rather quiet start to the summer transfer window for Tottenham Hotspur. The club were extremely active in the transfer market this time last year, with Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison signing on the dotted lined and Dejan Kulusevski joining permanently.

Timo Werner is the only addition ahead of the 2024/25 campaign so far, rejoining the Lilywhites on a season-long loan after finishing last term with Tottenham following his loan switch from RB Leipzig. Whereas some clubs have been active in the transfer market since it opened earlier in June, the vast majority of Spurs' rivals have yet to strengthen.

All connected with Tottenham will be hoping that there will soon be an influx in terms of players coming in through the door as it won't be too long until Ange Postecoglou's side start the new season away at Leicester City. So what exactly are the three biggest transfer jobs facing Johan Lange and his team this summer? football.london takes a look below.

Solve those key positions

Tottenham have plenty to do in the transfer market this summer but they have a couple of positions in the team that must take priority. The club are crying out for a new striker after failing to bring in a replacement for Harry Kane last August.

Richarlison did well when deployed through the middle and went on to score 12 goals but he was absent through injury for nine games and was a key miss for the team. Spurs must bring in a striker who either takes the Brazilian's place in the team or really pushes him for his starting spot.

Given the amount of chances Tottenham do tend to create due to their options in the wide areas, signing a prolific striker could potentially make all the difference come the end of the season. Midfield is another area that Tottenham need to address ahead of the new term as the team really do lack a top quality No.6 who is not only good on the ball but can offer the defence some much-needed protection.

Yves Bissouma was deployed in the role last season but he failed to hit the heights on a consistent basis after initially starting the campaign off in style. Midfield did become an issue for Spurs in the final few months of the 2023/24 season and a new No.6 could potentially elevate them to a new level altogether.

Sign Ramsey

The key for Tottenham this summer is to add even more quality to the squad as they look to achieve Postecoglou's lofty ambitions. The Lilywhites do have an interest in Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey and football.london understands that the club have enquired again about his availability this month after Lange approached his former club in January about the talented youngster.

Amid reports earlier this week about Villa rejecting a £20million bid from Tottenham that also included Giovani Lo Celso, football.london understands that Unai Emery's side are unlikely to sell the player. If Lange and Tottenham do indeed want to lure Ramsey to N17 ahead of the new season, the club should submit an offer that Aston Villa deem too good to turn down.

Ramsey moving to Tottenham would give Postecoglou's team even more quality in the middle of the park and he would also help Tottenham out when it comes to their homegrown numbers. A player who is more than capable of scoring from midfield, Spurs could do with a midfielder who contributes with goals regularly and Ramsey fits the bill.

Transfer outgoings

As vital as transfer incomings are at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, outgoings also need to take place in terms of reshaping Postecoglou's squad. Tottenham made strides last season in regards to moving players on but more still needs to be done in order to give the head coach his perfect Spurs squad.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Lo Celso and Bryan Gil are three players who look on course to move permanently this summer due to a lack of regular first-team football in north London. Emerson Royal is another player who could also depart and there are also question marks over Manor Solomon following an injury-hit first season at Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou set to make crucial decision on talented Tottenham wonderkid

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is set to make a decision on the next step in Jamie Donley's future amid plenty of loan interest from clubs in the Championship and League One, football.london understands.

The 19-year-old had a season to remember last time out as he produced 25 goal involvements in 23 games (17 assists, nine goals) for Spurs' U21s in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy alone, not to mention a flurry of further assists and goals in the Premier League Cup. Originally a forward, Donley has turned into an even bigger prospect as an attacking midfielder with a surge in his development last season.

That dominating form caught the eye of Postecoglou and Donley was handed three appearances in the Premier League from the bench against Manchester City, Newcastle United and Brentford, before also coming on late against Burnley in the FA Cup third round. He was also among the young players who appeared in the post-season friendly in Melbourne against Newcastle.

With the Tottenham players set to return to Hotspur Way from July 6 for pre-season training under Postecoglou, promoted senior assistant coach Matt Wells and a reshaped coaching staff, the Australian will have to decide what comes next for Donley, who signed a four-year deal with the club last year.

football.london understands that while Spurs are not entertaining offers to sell the player, there is a growing likelihood that they could decide to loan him out next season as long as the move is guaranteed to bring regular football and help his development into the player many within the club believe he can become.

Postecoglou's former assistant coach Chris Davies was a big fan of Donley and with the 39-year-old now in his first managerial role, in charge of Birmingham City, the Midlands club are expected to be in the running for Donley this summer if a loan move is the way forward. Birmingham are now in League One after their relegation but will be favourites for promotion and will likely continue to have crowds of around 21,000 at St Andrew's week in, week out.

Newly-promoted Championship side Oxford United are also believed to be among the clubs in the Football League ready to line up for Donley if Postecoglou green-lights a season of regular football for the teenager.

Tottenham have 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall arriving from Djurgarden next week following his £8.5million move from Sweden, with Alfie Devine set to return from a season away on loan, while Postecoglou has also taken a shine to Mikey Moore and Tyrese Hall from the club's academy, meaning there are plenty of youth options for the number eight and attacking roles.

When it comes to Donley, the Australian must decide whether to keep the youngster around to get minutes in the Europa League and Carabao Cup and then consider a loan move in January, or allow the teenager to spend the entire season out on loan getting regular first team experience for his development as Devine did last year.

Tottenham defenders square up and 5 things Ange Postecoglou must watch at Euros and Copa America

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Tottenham Hotspur fans and their head coach still have plenty to keep an eye on at Euro 2024 and the Copa America as they reach the business end of the tournaments.

The European Championships round of 16 fixtures are about to begin, with those matches kicking off on Saturday, and the Copa America in the USA is halfway through its second round of group stage matches but then advances quickly as it does not have a last 16.

Even though Ange Postecoglou has now ended his well-received three-game stint as a pundit for ITV there is still plenty of Tottenham involvement in both competitions in the weeks ahead as well as potential new recruits to be seen.

Here are five things the Spurs boss and the club's supporters should look out for at the competitions:

Spurs stars square up

Two Tottenham centre-backs could go head to head on Tuesday at 5pm as Romania take on the Netherlands. Radu Dragusin has starred for Romania during their historic run to the knockout stages as they topped the tightest group in the tournament in which every team in Group E ended on four points with goal difference deciding things.

The 22-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for his country and impressed throughout, while the Netherlands have struggled - albeit also with one win, one draw and one defeat - and only qualified for the knockout stages in third place in Group D.

Micky van de Ven, 23, has had to make do with just 28 minutes across two appearances as the Dutch have shipped four goals in their three matches.

Ronald Koeman could decided to hand the speedster his first competitive start for his country and if he does then the two Spurs defenders will come face to face on July 2.

When Tottenham players will return

We know that one of Dragusin or Van de Ven will end their Euros next week, which means that with three weeks off often offered to players after a tournament, that exiting defender could be back in time to head on the tour to Japan and South Korea next month, with the squad expected to fly out around July 22 to start their trip to Tokyo.

Guglielmo Vicario's Italy are up against Switzerland on Saturday and then Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is back in action against Germany later that day. So either could be back at Hotspur Way sooner rather than later. Hojbjerg has been linked with a move away from Tottenham and Vicario's lack of actual action for Italy could mean he decides he needs less of a rest, albeit having trained hard through the competition in case he's needed.

At the Copa America, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso's Argentina are already through to the quarter-finals, which start from next Friday (July 5) onwards. Rodrigo Bentancur and Uruguay were set to kick off their second group stage game against Bolivia in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

Shop window displays

With Argentina already qualified for the knockout stages, Lo Celso, who has come on for about 20 minutes or so from the bench in their first two matches, could be handed a longer chance to impress. The 28-year-old might get a start in the final group game against Peru this Sunday as Lionel Scaloni could look to ensure his regular starters are rested and his other players are sharp for the quarter-finals if required.

More game time means more eyes on Lo Celso, who is expected to leave Tottenham this summer after half a decade at the club, and will only increase the interest in his services.

Hojbjerg has also impressed at the Euros and with that game against in-form hosts Germany, he might have one final chance to put himself in the shop window before the bids start arriving. Both players have a year left on their contracts at Spurs.

Keep an eye on Jonathan David

Jonathan David is among the shortlist of names Spurs are looking at for a potential striker signing this summer. Other clubs are also looking at the Canadian, and Tottenham have others on their list, but you can get a good look yourself at the 24-year-old, who scored with a fine finish to win the game against Peru on Tuesday.

He will be up next against Chile at 1am UK time in the early hours of Sunday morning if you fancy staying up to watch a player who has scored 26 goals a season in his past two campaigns for Lille and could be available for around £25million this summer.

Eberechi Eze and other links

It's not just David as other players Tottenham are keeping an eye on are still in action at the Euros. Eberechi Eze is a midfielder Spurs and Postecoglou like but has had precious little time to impress under Gareth Southgate since the tournament in Germany began. He could get another chance in Sunday's match against Slovakia and Spurs fans, and Palace fans of course, will be watching closely.

Others players who have been linked with Tottenham in recent weeks by the media with varying degrees of accuracy such as Conor Gallagher, Ivan Toney, Riccardo Calafiori and Santiago Gimenez will also be in action across the two competitions so make sure you catch them before they get their summer break.

word response to Alexander Isak transfer claims

Description

Tottenham Hotspur striker Richarlison has rubbished rumours that he was part of a player-plus-cash deal in order to sign Newcastle United frontman Alexander Isak this summer.

Manager Ange Postecoglou has already told football.london in the past about the club's need to find new central attacking options for the 2024/25 campaign, with names on their shortlist including Lille striker Jonathan David, who is also on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs alongside Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze and Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey.

But while the Australian makes plans for arrivals this summer, departures are another piece of the puzzle that he must solve. Questions have surrounded the future of Richarlison, with the Brazilian international having been rumoured to make a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Having arrived in North London almost two years ago to the tune of £60m, his 12 goals in 31 matches for Spurs last season impressed amid an unfortunate streak of injuries which hampered his involvement for much of the campaign.

His injury record while at the club is understood by football.london to be one of the reasons why the club will be listening to any serious offers for the star this summer, so when it was claimed by Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio earlier this week that the club had offered the star plus a 'balancing payment' of cash, many weren't surprised.

Isak's 25-goal campaign last year has made him a target for seemingly every major club across the continent, including Spurs' rivals Chelsea and Arsenal with Newcastle apparently valuing the star at £180m - a number if reached would make him the second most expensive player of all time.

However, what supporters may not have been expecting was Richarlison to outright deny the rumour on social media having taken to Instagram in order to set the record straight.

The account @the_spurs_news posted the rumour from Di Marzio, to which Richarlison simply commented 'Fake', effectively killing off the rumour almost immediately. Supporters were delighted with the star's quick response, with many commenting underneath his reply calling for him to stay at the club through the summer.

The very different Tottenham transfer styles of Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici

Description

Johan Lange is the man leading the transfer changes at Tottenham Hotspur for Ange Postecoglou and the quiet Dane certainly operates in a very different way to his predecessor.

The Postecoglou era has so far been one of Spurs' most successful in recent years when it comes to recruitment. Last summer the Australian had to take the lead on transfers with the club's previous managing director of football Fabio Paratici having received a worldwide ban following his much-publicised indiscretions at Juventus in Italy which resulted in him resigning from his role at the north London outfit in April that year.

A walking back on some aspects of his ban by the Italian Football Federation and FIFA meant that Paratici remained a presence behind the scenes in a consultancy role and he looked to aid Postecoglou, chairman Daniel Levy and then chief scout Leonardo Gabbanini during that summer window.

Even in January this year, Postecoglou confirmed that Paratici was still in communication back then to a marginal degree at the club.

"I don't have a lot of dialogue with too many people. That's how I structure my working life, I keep these things to a minimum," he said. "Obviously I know Fabio and every now and then we'll exchange messages or calls. He's a smart guy and you can see that he's got a great eye for talent but within the workings of the club and what I do, I don't have that kind of engagement. Not just with Fabio but with most people."

Paratici, 51, is very much a front of house sporting director-type, one who has no issue stepping into the public eye and occasionally revelling in it. In Italy, he would undertake media interviews regularly ahead of matches, something that dried up the moment he stepped through the doors at Tottenham.

The Italian is someone everyone at the top of the game has spoken to at some point. He is a friend to the 'super agents' and big agencies and his style of working is well-known. He will draw up a list of potential candidates for each position he wants to sign someone in and then take negotiations to varying stages with clubs and players' representatives before deciding on the one that he wants to push through.

Paratici's way of working ends up being very public with so many clubs involved and many of his targets are well known in the media, particularly back home in Italy. That's not seen as a negative though in his world because while it's noisy and messy, it also makes it clear to the many potential selling clubs that he could move on to any other candidate at any moment if they waste his time.

The former Juventus man's legacy at Tottenham before his ban remains mixed, if anything perhaps leaning more towards successful.

His one real managerial choice though was Nuno Espirito Santo, convincing the club to take the Portuguese on with videos of the way his Valencia side once played, and that brought an uninspiring brief Tottenham tenure and a head coach in the wrong club at the wrong time.

Paratici's signings fell into three categories after his arrival in the summer of 2021 onwards across four windows. There were the successes in Cristian Romero, Pape Matar Sarr, Destiny Udogie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski, Pedro Porro eventually and the free agent Ivan Perisic to a degree.

There were those who have contributed but aren't outstanding successes as of yet like Richarlison and Yves Bissouma - both of whom had slow starts - as well as Emerson Royal, Clement Lenglet and Fraser Forster.

Then there were those who have to be considered flops with hindsight such as the £22million young Spaniard Bryan Gil - very talented but ill-suited to the Premier League, the goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini - who Paratici was certain would take over from Hugo Lloris - and both Djed Spence and Arnaut Danjuma, who the then manager Antonio Conte had no real wish for at all.

Paratici's fingerprints were on some of last summer's deals as well. He had previously tried to set up deals for Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison in previous windows before both players would eventually sign in 2023 for Postecoglou. Mostly though the window's recruitment was compiled by Postecoglou with help from Gabbanini and Levy.

Then came Lange, starting work officially on November 1 last year after being appointed by the club's new chief football officer Scott Munn.

The 44-year-old Dane arrived at a club that had started to be overhauled by Paratici following appraisals of the many departments, but Lange wanted it to be more data-led than it had been under the Italian, something that both Postecoglou and Levy were equally keen to see implemented.

Compared to Paratici, the well-connected Lange is a quiet person. He's not the man holding court, rather someone who just gets on with his job without all of the noise, fuss and egos that can exist within football among sporting directors and chairman.

Paratici was someone who excelled in charming those in the boardrooms, either inside and outside the club, Lange concentrates on those he believes matter most and that is the representatives and families around the players he wants and his fellow sporting directors. It was Lange who won Lucas Bergvall and his family over to the idea of joining Tottenham ahead of Barcelona at the turn of this year, in doing so securing the north London club one of the most exciting young prospects in Scandinavia. It was something Postecoglou publicly praised the Dane for.

Lange set up that deal for Bergvall with Djurgarden's extrovert and charismatic sporting director Bosse Andersson.

"I think if you compare me with Johan Lange, we are different people!" he told football.london with a giggle last month. "I know him from FC Copenhagen because I have a long relationship with them and I think they will have stories about how Bosse Andersson works because we have done some transfers before.

"I know him well and he's a person you respect. It's a very different world to do transfers and I appreciate him a lot. He was the key to this deal and I think you have to also understand that with him being new in the club."

Lange has a close relationship with Spurs' new chief scout Rob Mackenzie, who is seen as his "eyes and ears" by many, and his fellow-Dane and data cruncher Frederik Leth, Tottenham's head of football insights and strategy, who has been strengthening his department in recent weeks with various new hires.

Spurs had made missteps in previous years with 'club signings' who did not fit the manager's system or were wanted at all. Lange has been keen to ensure that any player that comes through the door fits the head coach's philosophy and system perfectly and most of all were wanted.

"It is very important when we are out there watching potential new players that they fit with the style of play and also with the personality of the group we want to build," Lange said in February. "We are very fortunate to have a Head Coach in Ange who is crystal clear in how he wants to play, how he wants to train, which kind of personalities he is looking for to build a squad.

"When the scouting team and myself are out watching players we know exactly what we are looking for, we are completely aligned as a club in how we want to build the squad over the coming years, which is hugely important."

His first deal at the club was the one for Timo Werner, with both Lange and Postecoglou agreeing that the experienced German would be the perfect fit out wide in his system with his pace and ability to drive and hit low balls across the six-yard box. The metrics after the former Chelsea man signed, as he led many of the charts in the final third, proved that to be correct even if Werner's ability to finish remains inconsistent. Postecoglou had seen enough before his hamstring injury in the final weeks of the season to greenlight another 12 months at least of the 28-year-old on loan.

Radu Dragusin had been a Paratici favourite since the Italian took him to Juventus from Romania in 2018, but Lange's data backed up his potential signing for Postecoglou and he wanted to see him with his own eyes. So he and Mackenzie went to watch the young centre-back in action for Genoa, Lange staying for a second match just to make sure.

Bayern were also menacingly interested though and in the end Lange and Levy were still working on the deal up until 3am on the morning before he signed, locked in talks with the player's representatives to ensure it did not fall through, with the hope that the young Romanian would stick to his word and join them. The now 22-year-old did and has impressed in his game time since for Tottenham and for Romania at the Euros this summer.

The key for Lange is to be quietly effective in the transfer market. Many of his dealings at Aston Villa came out of the blue, often with negotiations well advanced before the signings were leaked into the public domain, a tough ask in a game with so many eyes, ears and certainly mouths.

Tottenham prefer to operate in that way, to prevent the bigger sides from coming to the table and stealing off their plate, and Lange is certainly causing an issue for those who deal in the business of transfer news, for an even higher percentage of links and reports than normal that have come out across the world about Spurs' prospective dealings this summer have had no basis in fact.

Andersson told football.london of the deal this year for Bergvall with Lange: "I would say they showed interest three to four weeks before [he signed]. They said they had been following him and they were serious with their interest but to keep quiet and that they would be there [at the end]."

Lange and Spurs were sat there quiety at the end and got their man. This summer is a slower window to navigate through, thanks to the Euros and Copa America with many players competing at them only wanting to focus on their club futures when they return. Agents within the game have also told football.london that many clubs are waiting until July 1 to take any potential transfer talk to advanced stages in order to make sure transfers go on the next set of financial accounts, such is the fear over falling foul of profit and sustainability rules.

That still leaves two months for Lange to work within, while being mindful that Postecoglou is keen for as many new signings to be involved during the various stages of pre-season as possible, which begins from July 6 at Tottenham.

So far of last season's top six, only Aston Villa and Chelsea have made any moves, mostly young players as they look to redress their financial fair play issues. There is expected to be further flurries of transfer activity before June 30 around the clubs with that in mind and then more will join in when July begins and those new books open, before the end of the international tournaments sparks another wave of activity.

Amongst it all will be the quiet but focused Lange, looking to make Postecoglou's third transfer window at the club the one that really carves out a Tottenham Hotspur squad in his image.

The very different Tottenham transfer styles of Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici
