Ange Postecoglou can avoid nightmare Tottenham scenario ahead of Liverpool Premier League fixture

There was a moment midway inside the second half of Tottenham's defeat against Manchester City where Rodrigo Bentancur came very close to bringing Jeremy Doku down. City looked to hit Spurs at speed but the Belgian managed to stay on his feet and race away from the midfielder following their tussle for the ball on the halfway line.

As Bentancur was already on a yellow card, Ange Postecoglou immediately decided to substitute his midfielder rather than run the risk of him seeing red and earn a one-match ban in the process. Bentancur has already spent a chunk of the season on the sidelines due to two separate suspensions and his boss didn't want him to miss out again during a vital period for the north London club.

Bentancur's second suspension of the campaign all came about after obtaining five yellow cards from Tottenham's first 19 games of the season, thus seeing him miss the Newcastle United defeat in January in the process. The next cut-off point for a suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards is not too far away now that 27 Premier League games have passed.

Under The FA's rules, players who receive a total of 10 yellow cards in their side's first 32 Premier League matches receive a two-match suspension. Will Hughes of Crystal Palace and Fulham's Sasa Lukic have already achieved that feat and will now miss two games for their respective clubs.

In terms of Tottenham, Postecoglou looks to be in a really good position to avoid any player picking up a two-match ban for 10 yellow cards. Bentancur currently leads the way on six, with the player's only caution in the league since his ban for the Newcastle game coming on Wednesday evening against Manchester City.

In order to be banned for two games, Bentancur would need to receive four yellow cards in Tottenham's next five league fixtures against Bournemouth, Fulham, Chelsea, Southampton and Wolves. Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison are then behind Bentancur in the yellow card standings for Tottenham after obtaining five apiece.

For the trio to be banned for the Nottingham Forest and Liverpool games in late April, they would all need to be booked in each of Tottenham's next five league fixtures. Tottenham could lose players to suspension for red cards over the next month or so but they look on course to avoid bans for ten yellows unless they start picking them up at an alarming rate.

Ange Postecoglou's Djed Spence decision speaks volumes as Tottenham boss makes priority clear

Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night brought plenty of talking points and a big one was Ange Postecoglou's team selection for the match.

Erling Haaland's first-half goal ultimately decided a game that saw City dominate the opening 45 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Spurs controlled the second half and had enough chances to grab a point from the encounter or even all three had they been more clinical in front of goal.

Postecoglou chose to start the game with Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and the in-form Djed Spence all rested on the bench and when asked by football.london about that decision the Tottenham boss explained his reasoning.

"There's no point having a squad and I can't be sitting here bemoaning not having a squad and then not use it [when I do]. I think that'd be highly hypocritical of me, but we needed Destiny [Udogie], Brennan [Johnson] and Wilson to play today and get some minutes," said the Australian,

"Deki, Sonny and Djed have played an enormous amount of time, so having them have a little bit of a recovery and a breather, I thought was going to be helpful for us, but more importantly, now I've got three more players who are getting close to...I mean it's 90 minutes for Brennan, that's the first 90 minutes for quite a while. We're going to have some real options which we're going to need because we've got Europa and league back-to-back now and we need as many bodies available for that as possible."

We asked our Spurs reporters Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest what they made of the starting line-up sent out on the night in N17.

Alasdair Gold - Tottenham Hotspur correspondent

Rightly or wrongly, ultimately results and hindsight decide whether the team selected was the correct one or not. After a first half in which Spurs were fortunate to get to the break with only a single goal deficit, that same starting XI - following some choice words at the interval - looked far better in the second period and took the game to City.

Had Tottenham come away with even a point if Pape Matar Sarr's late header had crept under the crossbar rather than over it then the decision to rotate might have been lauded if the players brought in to get minutes all go on to impress in the cluster of four games in 11 days from next Thursday onwards. There's no doubting that Odobert, Johnson and Udogie will benefit going forward but was it at the cost of the points on this occasion?

If I'm a Manchester City player arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday and I see a Spurs starting XI without Son and Kulusevski, who have given the Citizens nightmares over recent seasons, then I'm probably breathing a sigh of relief. That also goes for Spence's omission, with the 24-year-old Spurs' best-performing player and a threat going forward.

Kulusevski and Son did need rests and perhaps Spence after such an intense period of fixtures which his body had got unused to, but in a big match that came eight days before the Europa League tie in Alkmaar seems like an unlikely choice. It perhaps also lends itself to Postecoglou prioritising that game in the Netherlands - the competition does represent Tottenham's last chance of salvaging the season - over a match in which a defeat would not have sent shockwaves around the league.

Rob Guest - Football writer

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham team selection against Manchester City was certainly a talking point before the game and it remained one after it. The decision to name Djed Spence, Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min on the bench did not go down well with some fans but Postecoglou quite clearly had his reasons.

I've no issue with the changes the Spurs boss made but I think they should have come against Ipswich Town in the previous game instead, although a start at Portman Road would have come just too early for Wilson Odobert as he steps up his fitness. I get the importance of the Ipswich fixture to building momentum in the Premier League but Tottenham still had enough firepower in their team to win without Spence, Kulusevski and Son in the XI.

Kulusevski and Son have certainly needed a rest for a while and Ipswich presented the best opportunity to give them that, thus meaning they would be fresh to take on Manchester City. Postecoglou summed it up perfectly after the game when he said "there's no point having a squad and I can't be sitting here bemoaning not having a squad and then not use it [when I do]".

There's also no guarantee the trio would have made a huge difference in the first half as City dominated proceedings and Spurs really struggled to lay a glove on them. It's just nice for Postecoglou to have choice for once after going so long with limited options at his disposal.

Rio Ferdinand can't believe what finance expert Kieran Maguire said about Tottenham

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has named Tottenham as the "best run club" in the Premier League. However, in praising the club he also delivered a jibe at Spurs' lack of silverware in recent seasons.

Tottenham supporters protested against the club's owners ENIC and chairman Daniel Levy ahead of the win over Manchester United a couple of weeks ago. Banners can often be seen inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium asking for Levy to leave the club too.

After the defeat to Manchester City on Thursday, the regular banner of '24 seasons, 16 managers, 1 trophy, Time for change' was shown by the TNT Sports cameras.

It has been a season to forget for Spurs, who have suffered horrendous injury problems and are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League table as a result. There could yet be success in the Europa League, with Tottenham taking on AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 next week.

But, off the pitch, everything is as good as it can be. Maguire, a guest on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, named Spurs as the best run club in the league.

He said: "Spurs. They are the most profitable club in the history of the Premier League. By far. Best stadium, lowest wages compared to the money coming in.

"As a business, if I take away my football hat and put on my business hat it's absolutely perfect. And also they don't have to pay any bonuses for winning trophies!"

That jibe at the end had Ferdinand laughing. The former Manchester United defender replied: "Oh my gosh, shots being fired."

Tottenham April fixture schedule revealed with Chelsea and Liverpool changes in latest TV picks

Tottenham fans can start planning their travel for April after the Premier League confirmed their TV selections for the month. April should hopefully be a big month in Tottenham's calendar with five league games on the agenda and possibly a quarter-final double-header in the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou's side start April with a London derby clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. A ground Spurs do not fare well on at all, the game between the sides will now take place at 8pm on Thursday, April 3 and be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

The Thursday game in west London means that Tottenham will have a Sunday game three days later when Southampton visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Initially pencilled in for Saturday, April 5, the match will now be played the following day at 3pm but it will not be shown live on TV in the UK.

Tottenham's away trip to Wolves remains in the calendar for 3pm on Saturday, April 12, although this will change to the Sunday if they are to be playing in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Tottenham's following league game against Nottingham Forest has been moved to an 8pm kick-off on Monday, April 21 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Sky Sports the place to be for the action.

If Spurs are in European action prior to the Forest encounter, they will have an extra day to recover before playing Nuno Espirito Santo's side rather than playing on a Sunday as usual straight after a European game. Finally, Tottenham will end April with a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday, April 27, with a 4:30pm kick-off on Merseyside.

It could be a pivotal match in the Premier League title race with the Reds in a very good position to get their hands on the trophy for only the second time. The Premier League have confirmed that the match is subject to movement to Saturday, April 26 (8pm) dependent on Liverpool's participation in UEFA Champions League the following Tuesday.

Tottenham's Premier League games in April

Thursday, April 3 - Chelsea (A) - 8pm (Sky Sports)

Sunday, April 6 - Southampton (H) - 2pm

Saturday, April 12 - Wolves (A) - 3pm

Monday, April 21 - Nottingham Forest (H) - 8pm (Sky Sports)

Sunday, April 27 - Liverpool (A) - 4:30pm (Sky Sports)

Daniel Farke confirms when Leeds will make Manor Solomon transfer decision after Tottenham loan

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has revealed a decision will be made over Manor Solomon once they know which league they will be playing in next season. Missing out on promotion to the Premier League last term, the West Yorkshire club look on course to return to the top flight as they top the Championship table after 34 games.

Following Monday evening's 3-1 win over second-place Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, Leeds have a five-point cushion over their nearest challengers and a seven-point advantage over Burnley in third. With 12 games of the Championship season still to play, Leeds are in a very promising position heading into the business end of the campaign.

Tottenham ace Solomon has played a huge role in their impressive season to date after making a telling impact at Elland Road since making the loan switch in late August. In his 29 games in all competitions, the 25-year-old has chipped in with seven goals and eight assists.

Tottenham and Leeds do appear to have a great relationship after striking deals involving Archie Gray, Djed Spence, Joe Rodon and Solomon over the past 18 months. Rodon was in fact on loan at Leeds last year before making his move permanent in the summer, with Leeds fans hoping Solomon follows in the defender's shoes.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's home encounter against West Bromwich Albion, Farke was asked the club's stance on loan players Solomon and Joe Rothwell.

"I always like to be in the driver seat as a club but if you have a loan agreement you're not in the driver seat, there are more or less three parties," he explained, as reported by Yorkshire Evening Post. "It's not our players, you have to totally respect they are with us, that's great, we enjoy the time and then there is a time to speak about what the future might bring.

"It's not during the season, especially during a crucial time. You sometimes start talks behind the scenes before the end of the season.

"It will be crucial for them and their mother clubs, where we will be next season. Before it's confirmed it doesn't make sense to make decisions. It will only be made when it's confirmed in which league we will play."

word response to Jeremy Doku says everything about the Tottenham full

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Djed Spence's confidence is in full flow right now following a consistent period of impressive performances for Tottenham Hotspur and that was on show in his post-match response to Manchester City's Jeremy Doku.

The Spurs full-back has been in fine form in recent months, scoring in the victory at Ipswich last weekend and drawing praise from Ange Postecoglou and also Pep Guardiola after Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City. To the dismay of many Tottenham supporters, Spence was rested on the bench from the starting line-up alongside captain Son Heung-min and midfielder Dejan Kulusevski.

All three came on in the 67th minute with Pape Matar Sarr, but by that point Doku had already made his mark as the 22-year-old caused right-back Pedro Porro all kinds of problems with his pace and dribbling. It was the Belgian whose deflected cross fell for Erling Haaland to score what would prove to be the only goal of the encounter.

Doku played the full game and won the Premier League player of the match award. When Spence did enter the fray after the hour mark, the Spurs man replaced Destiny Udogie on the left side, meaning the duo never got to tussle, leaving many fans wondering whether Spence's extra pace would have dealt better from the start with the trickery of the Belgian.

After the game, Spence and Doku, who spent time together at Rennes two seasons ago while the Spurs man was on loan alongside Joe Rodon, had a conversation on the pitch and swapped shirts.

Then the City man later posted a photo on Instagram of himself on the coach on the way home with the player of the match award with the caption: "Important 3 points secured and coming back to Manchester! Let keep it pushing @mancity Glory to God always."

It did not go unnoticed that within the replies underneath, Spence replied playfully with four simple words: "We'll meet next time …"

It showed Spence's confidence at the moment with his rising importance at Spurs and with new England boss Thomas Tuchel again watching him among others at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday.

The social media comment from Spence drew thousands of likes, no doubt mostly from Spurs fans, and plenty of responses from City supporters and all eyes will be on the duo next season when they cross paths again, perhaps this time on the same side of the pitch.

Guardiola also approached Spence after the game, playfully slapping the Spurs man in the face and poking him in the chest.

When asked what he had said to the 24-year-old Spurs full-back, Guardiola explained with a dead pan delivery: "Why you run too much? Should be more calm so the impact… Udogie is quite similar. The pace of this team? Pfft, it is difficult.

"Maybe Liverpool [are better], but Bergvall, every time he has the ball and run, unstoppable, Spence and Pedro Porro, Udogie, Kulusevski, Son, an incredible physical team with a clear idea to play. They play really good and they play without Romero and Van de Ven, two of maybe the best central defenders in the league."

Archie Gray's big Tottenham challenge that Leeds United should have prepared him for

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Archie Gray has been named the Young Player of the Year at the London Football Awards.

The teenager has had to deal with his fair share of adversity in his debut season at Tottenham Hotspur, filling in in an unfamiliar position at centre-back for much of the campaign due to Spurs' horrendous run of injuries.

Gray joined Spurs in a £40million deal from Leeds United in the summer, that saw Joe Rodon go the other way. And he has been one of the mainstays of the team due to the injury list, something which has surprised him.

Speaking to BBC Radio London after picking up his award, for which he beat the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri at Arsenal, Gray admitted it has been tough this season.

He said: "It's been different, it's a big jump from Leeds in the Championship to the Premier League and the amount of games we've had this year it's definitely been a challenge."

The sheer volume of games should not surprise Gray, who played 50 times for Leeds United last season as a 17-year-old. More likely is the fact he was not expecting, at 18, to be involved so much in the top flight in his debut campaign, having played 35 times already. It has been a case of needs must for head coach Ange Postecoglou though and Gray spoke about his boss too.

He added: "I'm grateful for the manager trusting me and putting me in these different positions, I've always said I don't really care where I play, or what position it is on the pitch, I'll always work my hardest and wherever the manager puts me, he knows best and I believe in him 100%."

Gray has started 19 of Spurs' last 20 matches in all competitions, with 16 of those coming in that centre-back role. Tottenham have had a difficult season, sitting 13th in the Premier League currently, but the emergence of Gray and other young players like Lucas Bergvall will stand them in good stead for future years.

Gray continued: "I've got a lot to learn, every game I can learn something different, I always watch the games back and analyse them.

"Credit to the coaches, they've been helping me out and people on the pitch, the centre-backs especially, Ben [Davies], Kevin [Danso], Cuti (Cristian Romero), Micky [van de Ven] they've always spoken me through every game and it would have been difficult if I didn't have such leaders and such experience in the game helping me out. I wouldn't have been able to do it."

The mostly unseen Tottenham player who seems to excite Postecoglou the most

Submitted by daniel on

Description

This performance had been a long time coming for Wilson Odobert and few people were more excited than Ange Postecoglou.

Wednesday night's match against Manchester City brought the Frenchman's first start for Tottenham since the Carabao Cup tie at Coventry in September. In fact it was only his third start since arriving at Spurs for £30million from Burnley the previous month.

For plenty has happened for Odobert since he signed on the dotted line for the north London club. He was a 19-year-old when he joined the Premier League club but a hamstring injury in that game at the Ricoh Arena was followed by an ill-fated return off the bench the following month against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Something did not feel right on his return and Odobert required hamstring injury. There were some fears within the club that he might play little part in the remainder of the season, so serious was the damage.

However, Odobert recovered well and with the acceleration he often shows on the pitch. He eventually returned to the grass at Hotspur Way, but Spurs took it cautiously with him after his previous false dawn.

He trained for a number of weeks before being fully exposed to full training and then any involvement in a matchday squad.

That finally came this month, with Odobert, now 20, coming off the bench for a handful of minutes against Manchester United and then a little bit more time at Ipswich. Then on Wednesday night it was decided by Postecoglou and the staff that he was ready to start, five months after his initial hamstring injury.

Odobert's performance was as many might have expected. In the first half he was rusty and tentative in his play, but as the game wore on and he felt he could trust his body more, so the winger began to feel and look like the Odobert that Tottenham signed.

He came roaring out of the traps for his 22 minutes in the second half. Matheus Nunes struggled to deal with the flying Frenchman as he either dribbled past him down the flank or cut inside, as comfortable on either foot.

The young winger could have got on the scoresheet to mark the occasion, but slid one shot wide of the left-hand post from Pedro Porro's whipped-in cross and he sent another effort deflected off target after a jinking run past various City challenges.

"I thought he was great," said Postecoglou. "It was important tonight that him, Destiny [Udogie] and Brennan [Johnson] got some minutes. Again, it’s one thing to get guys back from injury but we have got to get them up to speed as quickly as we possibly can.

"You could see Wilson hasn’t played for a while but you could also see the quality that he has. I think he grew into the game in the second half. I thought he was a big catalyst at the beginning of the second half when he was running at the opposition.

"He is an exciting player and if we can manage him through this period and get him to a really decent level of fitness, I'm sure he will help us finish the season strong."

Odobert has a big fan in Postecoglou and when he signed from the Championship in August, the Australian had no hesitation in throwing him straight into the next starting XI against Everton.

When asked what he had seen in training that week that made him hurl the teenager into the fray, the Spurs boss said on that August day: "Well, what you saw out there. It's just really exciting.

"I was excited by the way he went about things. He always wants to take his opponent on, you know, even if he hasn't been successful, he goes at him again and this is a 19-year-old playing for his new club in front of 60,000 people, and just played football the way he wants to play it, and I love that about him.

"He got tired in the second-half, but it’s really exciting for us that another young player comes in that is going to make us a better team.”

He added: "He's different from our other wingers. He goes at his opponent and, you know, even if he wasn't successful, he went at him again and I think that's exactly why we bought him to the club. I mean, he's 19-years-old, his first game for his new club at home in front of 60,000. Yeah, really exciting."

The key for Odobert as he looks to make up for lost time will be to add an end product to his undoubted dribbling ability and direct play.

He has the ability to be devastating and carve teams apart, but so far his 74 senior matches in England and France have brought just nine goals and five assists. There is of course his age to take into account when it comes to those numbers, but his skillset deserves more. That is something Postecoglou is excited to work with him on.

Wilson Odobert has become something of an unseen, forgotten man this season but he's got the talent and the time to burst back into the spotlight for Spurs now and for the foreseeable future.

Tottenham forward set to battle with Manchester City star for major prize

Tottenham Hotspur captain Beth England will come up against her strongest competitor for the Women's Super League Golden Boot this season on Sunday as Manchester City come to town.

With Ange Postecoglou's men's side having gone down 1-0 to City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday night, now it is the turn of Robert Vilahamn's women's team to tackle the Cityzens. Spurs are currently two places below the Manchester outfit in the table in sixth, but with 11 fewer points and having conceded the second highest number of goals in the WSL with 31.

However, they do have a goal outlet in England, who has notched seven this season in the league, which places her in third place in the top scorer standings behind only Arsenal's Alessia Russo, who has eight, and City's Khadija Shaw, who has 11 goals to her name and will be looking for more against Tottenham's defence this weekend.

In turn England will be trying to increase her tally and get Tottenham going again after a spell of three wins and draw was followed up by defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal.

In the past fortnight, the Spurs players have been dotted around the world while involved on international duty with their various countries.

Among the international displays, Jess Naz earned her sixth cap for England as a late second half substitute at Wembley Stadium on Thursday as the Lionesses beat reigning world champions Spain 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League.

Hayley Raso scored her 21st goal for Australia on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Colombia in their final game of the SheBelieves Cup. However, it was a goal made at Spurs as defender Charlotte Grant picked out Raso with a pinpoint cross and she took a touch before firing home. Raso added an assist in the defeat to the USA on Sunday, with Grant playing the full game and Clare Hunt an unused substitute for the Matildas.

Matilda Vinberg grabbed an assist on her third appearance for Sweden in a 1-1 draw with Wales in UEFA Nations League campaign on Tuesday night. Defender Amanda Nilden also started and played 82 minutes, while Josefine Rybrink was an unused substitute.

Luana Buhler played the full game for Switzerland as they fell to a 2-1 defeat in Norway, while Anna Csiki’s Hungary and Olga Ahtinen’s Finland faced off in Group Three of League B. Csiki played for 78 minutes, while Ahtinen came off the bench with 14 minutes remaining as Finland won 1-0.

Martha Thomas was a second half substitute for Scotland, playing just over 20 minutes at Hampden Park, as the Netherlands came from behind to win 2-1 win. Goalkeeper Lize Kop was an unused substitute for the visitors. Becky Spencer and Drew Spence helped Jamaica to a 2-0 victory over Peru in an international friendly on Sunday evening.

All of the Tottenham players will be looking to return with a bang to club football and grab a much-needed victory against City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
