Ian Wright lays into Daniel Levy as Arsenal legend and Wayne Rooney agree on Tottenham future

Ian Wright has slammed Daniel Levy for mismanaging Tottenham Hotspur over the years. The 62-year-old was given a position on the board in December 2000, meaning he's currently the longest-serving chairman of any Premier League club.

Despite his service to the North London outfit, Levy has grown unpopular among large sections of the fanbase. During the first half of Spurs' 3-2 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park earlier this month, the away supporters were heard chanting: "We want Levy out, we want Levy out!"

Then, during the Lilywhites' 2-1 loss to Leicester City at the weekend, banners were spotted around the stadium, protesting for Levy to step down. One banner in the South Stand of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium read: "24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy. Time for change."

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast by Sky Sports, Wayne Rooney and Wright reflected on Levy's time at Tottenham. The Manchester United all-time top goal scorer said: "I think something has to change. I don’t mean Ange, but something at that football club."

Pulling no punches, the Arsenal legend added: "But you look at Levy, when you look at Tottenham as a business, unbelievable, unbelievably run, and that’s what he does. If he had the same energy for trying to win something for Tottenham, they’d be winning something.

"Remember, they’ve had arguably one of the greatest goal scorers in English history, alongside Wayne [Rooney], of course, in respects of, that’s come through their academy. He didn’t build anything around that. He was scoring goals.

"How many golden boots did Harry [Kane] get in the end? Was it three or four? You’ve got somebody who’s capable of doing that. You didn’t build a team around him. They should have been winning things, because of the owner – they haven’t won anything with him, have they? With Levy at the helm.

"Tottenham used to win trophies, used to win FA cups, they used to win stuff. It’s him. He’s the one, they’ve got to get him out and get an owner in who wants to win something with these fans. The stadium’s always full."

Roy Keane chipped in: "That’s not how they run the club, though, right?"

Wright replied: "Yeah, but that’s why they need to change that, Roy, because the only thing that’s missing from that place is trophies."

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Ange Postecoglou was quizzed on his future at Tottenham, having also been heavily scrutinised recently. When asked if he had a message for angry Spurs fans, he said: "My message would be to all Spurs fans because I represent them all not just the angry ones that you are referring to or maybe talking to. All Spurs fans.

"We are working hard to turn this around. Obviously we know the situation, notwithstanding the fact the possibilities and opportunities in the second half of this season are still very much in our hands to capitalise on and still make it a successful season."

Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville agree on Ange Postecoglou Tottenham future as Ian Wright weighs in

Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville have backed Ange Postecoglou to remain Tottenham Hotspur boss. The 59-year-old has been heavily scrutinised recently after some disappointing results have seen his side fall to 15th in the Premier League table.

The Lilywhites are seven games without a win in the English top flight, and they're just eight points away from the relegation zone. Despite some poor performances, football.london understands that Spurs plan to stick with Postecoglou, and they'll try to sign at least one player for him before the January transfer window slams shut on Monday night.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast by Sky Sports, Rooney and Neville weighed in on the Tottenham boss' future. The Manchester United all-time top goal scorer has admired Postecoglou's honesty, comparing him to Louis van Gaal.

"I like him. I hope he survives. I just like his demeanour," said Rooney, who recently stepped down as Plymouth Argyle's head coach. Singing from the same hymn sheet, the former Red Devils defender added: "I hope he survives as well."

Rooney added: "There are some (managers) you look at and they annoy you. I just think with Ange, and how honest he is – we had it with [Louis] Van Gaal. Van Gaal used to do it and sometimes you can be too honest and I think that comes back to kill you. But with Ange, the injuries they’ve had – they’ve killed them!"

Ian Wright joined the discussion, attributing Tottenham's terrible run to the overwhelming number of injuries to key players. Agreeing with Rooney, the Arsenal legend said: "Absolutely. If we're going to talk about injuries – there are injuries for everyone – people will say, ‘Yeah what about Iraola at Bournemouth’.

"Brilliant for him, well done. Same with Unai Emery, he doesn’t go on about his injuries. But, the injuries have definitely impacted Tottenham when you look at what they’re doing."

Then, when asked about Tottenham's recent defeats to Everton and Leicester City by Neville, Wright added: "What I’m trying to say is from the injury point of view, I think it's massive, it's massive."

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Postecoglou was quizzed on his future at Tottenham. When asked to send a message to angry Spurs fans, he said: "My message would be to all Spurs fans because I represent them all not just the angry ones that you are referring to or maybe talking to. All Spurs fans.

"We are working hard to turn this around. Obviously we know the situation, notwithstanding the fact the possibilities and opportunities in the second half of this season are still very much in our hands to capitalise on and still make it a successful season."

Harry Kane and Mathys Tel agree on one thing as Tottenham transfer decision imminent

Description

Without Harry Kane at Bayern Munich, the Mathys Tel story may well have been very different. Instead of fighting against one of the world's greatest strikers, he could have been lapping up the minutes and goals himself.

Tel, who arrived in Germany one year before Kane, was still only 17 at the time of his transfer. That explains why both Thomas Tuchel and Julien Nagelsmenn were eager to shield him and protect him.

In Tel's first year at Bayern he started just one league game, for example. Despite this, his limited exposure still brought about five Bundesliga goals and he was a regular from the bench.

It is during this period that Tel was also most commonly used as a striker, the position it seemed he was going to grow into after breaking onto the scene at Rennes as a 16-year-old. When Kane joined that all changed.

Instead of competing with an ageing Thomas Muller, Tel was instead fighting against Bayern's new £90million man. Kane, as usual, started every match and was rarely taken off as well.

Even with his age in mind, Kane joined at 30 and only with some minor fitness worries after being relentlessly available for Tottenham. It is more than just a correlation that Tel moved out to the wing last season once Kane arrived.

Still only 18 at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Tel was looking to take things up a notch. He managed that, starting six league games and only going unused in four. He scored seven times and assisted five in that period, also bagging twice in the Champions League.

Although his total minutes last season fell below 1,500, for someone at this stage of their career it was a step forward. The continuation of that process hasn't followed, though, and is why Tottenham are among the interested parties able to bring him in this month.

Tel has decided it is time to leave Bayern. A permanent transfer is on the cards - so is a straight loan or one with an obligation to buy, for that matter - and Spurs are in the mix.

As they seek to bring reinforcements into Ange Postecoglou's side, it is only fair to question what the immediate upgrade Tel could bring might be. As another teenage talent, this time one without regular football for six months behind him, there is understandable uncertainty.

However, if Kane's words are anything to go by - and the former Tottenham man is surely a good judge when it comes to attackers - then it's only good news. Speaking in 2023, Kane said: “He’s started the season really well. I like the way he trains. He’s always pushing himself and is fully committed.

“Every time he came in he made a difference and is very confident. We’ll need all players.” Tel, conversely, has huge respect for Kane and has learned a lot from being alongside the England captain.

“He’s a great striker," he said last season. "He has shown that across his career. I’m a striker too, so he’s a role model for me. It’s important to have people to learn from technically and in terms of finishing. Often I don’t even have to ask him.

“He just comes over to me and tells me, ‘Mathys, you can do that, or that.' He’s a role model to me, and he is helping me a lot.”

Final Europa League matchday predicted as Tottenham discover European fate

Description

Tottenham take on Elfsborg in the final round of the Europa League league phase later today, where Spurs know three points will confirm their place in the Europa League knockout stages.

A Son Heung-min brace following James Maddison's early opener saw Spurs win 3-2 against Hoffenheim in their last Europa League outing, leaving Ange Postecoglou's side sixth in the Europa League league phase table. The cup competitions have been Spurs' only source of joy in recent weeks, with the Lilywhites winless in their last seven league games, with six of those losses.

Spurs fans will also be keeping an eye out on other results from the final batch of league phase games to see who Postecoglou's side could face in the knockout stages. Once again, Spurs have a huge number of injury problems ahead of the clash with Elfsborg, though Guglielmo Vicario and Micky van de Ven have both returned to training.

So, can Spurs secure their Europa League Round of 16 spot later today? Let's take a look...

We simulated Spurs vs Elfsborg to get a score prediction

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that Spurs could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Austin; Porro, Dragusin, Davies, Gray; Bentancur, Bissouma, Bergvall; Kulusevski, Son, Moore.

We predict that the Swedish side could set up in a 3-4-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: Pettersson; Holmen, Buhari, Yegbe; Hedlund, Zeneli, Ouma, Hult; Zeneli, Abdullali, Qasem.

Spurs started on the front foot in north London, and after testing the opposing 'keeper multiple times in the opening stages, they took the lead 14 minutes in when Mikey Moore beat his man on the left, cut inside, and curled a powerful shot into the far corner. It was a Son-esque goal from the youngster, and he should've been 2-0 moments later, but he could only poke Pedro Porro's deep cross past the post at the back stick.

Postecoglou's side were in full control, and in the 44th minute, they doubled their lead.

Rodrigo Bentancur won back possession as Elfsborg were pushing players forward, allowing Spurs to hit the visitors on the break. Son led the attack before sliding a pass into the path of Dejan Kulusevski, and the Swede powered his shot into the top corner from just inside the box to make it 2-0.

An uneventful second half saw Spurs see out the victory, booking their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

EA FC 25 predicted final score: Spurs 2-0 Elfsborg

The victory for Spurs ensured that the Lilywhites automatically claimed their spot in the Europa League Round of 16, meaning they avoided two extra games in the Round of 16 playoff round. We also simulated every other result from the final Europa League league phase game week to predict how the final table would look, and who Spurs could face.

These were the results:

Rangers 3-2 Union St. Gilloise

Roma 2-2 Eintracht Frankfurt

Slavia Praha 1-0 Malmo

FCSB 0-2 Man United

Ajax 1-2 Galatasaray

Maccabi Tel Aviv 0-2 Porto

Ferencvaros 2-0 AZ

Braga 1-3 Lazio

Real Sociedad 2-1 PAOK

Olympiacos 4-3 Qarabag

Lyon 3-0 Ludogorets

Dynamo Kyiv 1-1 RFS

Midtjylland 1-2 Fenerbache

Twente 0-0 Besiktas

Athletic Bilbao 2-0 Viktoria Plzen

Anderlecht 2-1 Hoffenheim

Nice 4-0 Bodo/Glimt

Based on these results, Spurs ended the league phase in fifth, meaning they would meet one of the teams who finished in 11th, 12th, 21st or 22nd in the round of 16. From the simulation, Postecoglou's side would face either FCSB, Real Sociedad, PAOK or Roma in the Round of 16.

Mikey Moore and Van de Ven start among Postecoglou changes

Description

Ange Postecoglou needs to get a positive result against Elfsborg not only to get back to winning ways but also for Tottenham to avoid an unwanted extra couple of Europa League fixtures.

Spurs are already through to the knockout stages of the competition but if they remain in the top eight with a victory, or potentially a draw, against their Swedish visitors at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium then they will bypass the play-off round, which brings two fixtures next month, and head straight into the round of 16 in March.

With Spurs' threadbare squad, to have two free midweeks in February could be crucial for Postecoglou to get his players recovered and ready to face Manchester United and Ipswich in consecutive weekends around when those play-off games would have been.

Long term absentee Wilson Odobert was not involved in training on Wednesday and neither were Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson, although football.london understands the latter will be back soon.

James Maddison however is out for up to three weeks, Guglielmo Vicario is back training but not ready yet while Djed Spence, Antonin Kinsky and Sergio Reguilon are not registered for the Europa League. Cristian Romero could be seen training in the gym but is not available yet. Micky van de Ven is back though and available after training for 10 days.

Here's the Tottenham team we reckon Postecoglou could select to face Elfsborg.

What Micky van de Ven did in Tottenham training return as clear six

Description

Micky van de Ven has returned to Tottenham Hotspur team training at the perfect time for Ange Postecoglou. The Netherlands international has played just one game since late October with two separate hamstring injuries seeing him miss nearly three months of action.

Cristian Romero has also been missing in that time which has mostly seen Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray feature at centre-back. The return of Ben Davies has helped matters but injuries for Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie has seen none of the trio either rested or eased back in gradually.

James Maddison is the latest player to join the list of absentees with Postecoglou confirming how long he would miss in a press conference while also offering three other injury updates. "Micky [Van de Ven] is good," he said. "He is good to go and we will try to get him some match minutes tomorrow. That’s the plan.

"Let’s see how much we can get out of him tomorrow. He has a good week/10 days training with the team and is in good condition so he is fine.

"In terms of the other guys, Madders has a calf strain so he is probably two to three weeks. He picked that up in the Hoffenheim game which was a week ago almost. Pape is okay, he still has got a bit of a niggle but he is okay and available. Biss is available. I think that is it for tomorrow night at this stage."

With several sessions under his belt, Van de Ven is ready to return and as confirmed by Postecoglou, will play a part in the Europa League clash against Elfsborg on Thursday.

The Spurs boss will be hoping to again use him against Brentford in Premier League action this weekend with the view to having his match sharpness up to scratch in time for two crucial cup games against Liverpool and Aston Villa.

While concern will understandably be high about the recurrence of an injury, Van de Ven looked sharp on the grass at Hotspur Way. In a four-and-a-half minute training clip uploaded to Spurs' social media channels, the centre-back was the focus as the video was captioned, "VAN DE VEN BACK IN TRAINING."

Though just some light warm-up drills and small-sided games were recorded, Van de Ven looked up to standard with another part of the video showing him working individually. One of the tasks saw him required to use that excellent recovery pace and Postecoglou will certainly be looking forward to seeing that back in his team.

Every word Ange Postecoglou said on transfer news, his future, Romero update, Maddison and Yang

Description

Ange Postecoglou had plenty to say in his press conference ahead of Tottenham's Europa League match against Elfsborg.

The Tottenham head coach's future has been the subject of plenty of speculation this week amid a run of terrible form in the Premier League with just one win in 11 matches in that competition. He was asked about his future, the latest transfer news around the club, injury updates both positive and negative as well as the imminent loan for Yang Min-hyeok to QPR.

Our Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Postecoglou. Scroll down for his latest updates from the press conference at Hotspur Way.

What's the latest team news?

Micky is good. He is good to go and we will try to get him some match minutes tomorrow. That’s the plan. Let’s see how much we can get out of him tomorrow. He has a good week/10 days training with the team and is in good condition so he is fine.

In terms of the other guys, Madders has a calf strain so he is probably two to three weeks. He picked that up in the Hoffenheim game which was a week ago almost. Pape is okay, he still has got a bit of a niggle but he is okay and available. Biss is available. I think that is it for tomorrow night at this stage

Are you feeling the pressure after Sunday's defeat?

Me, personally? No different to any other game mate. It’s a game I want to win and we go into it with the same intent. It’s a competition we have done really well in to be in a great position. We want to solidify our position and finish in the top eight. That’s in our hands tomorrow night. A win makes it certain, a draw is probably going to be good enough as well. Finishing in the top eight for us is hugely important because it gives us a good foothold in the tournament and also gives us a couple of weeks where we don’t have midweek games which at this point we are at is really important.

What's your message to angry Spurs fans? My message would be to all Spurs fans because I represent them all not just the angry ones that you are referring to or maybe talking to. All Spurs fans. We are working hard to turn this around. Obviously we know the situation, notwithstanding the fact the possibilities and opportunities in the second half of this season are still very much in our hands to capitalise on and still make it a successful season.

What's the latest on Cristian Romero?

Cuti's still a bit of a slow burner. We're mindful his injury was a bit different and he's still got to tick a few boxes so, yeah, not for the horizon at the moment in terms of this weekend. We'll see how he goes after.

How's the injury crisis been for you, have you been running from the physios when you see them coming?

It's well chronicled. Earlier in the year it was a different issue, we were kind of dealing with guys coming back and getting injured. But since probably late November, it's been logical that with the workload of the players we'll be getting niggles along the way and people picking up things. That's a natural consequence and not something that really we can do much about obviously. It hasn't been something you're surprised by.

What's the thinking behind Yang Min-hyeok going on loan to QPR?

Just to give him a chance to settle in to a new culture, a new environment, new league, new country. He's very young and we feel he needs to be allowed to settle. And with our current situation, the last thing I want to do is throw in another young player. We've got enough that we're exposing, they're doing awfully well. He's obviously a long-term investment for the football club and we've got to do the right thing by him.

There's big pressure and questions about your job every week, how are you dealing with that?

Are you still rock solid behind me? You don't know? I've lost you as well. I thought you'd be the last one standing for me, mate. If I've lost you I must be in trouble! It doesn't affect me, it never has, it never will. My view has never been about self-preservation or security. It's about trying to achieve and we're still in a position where we can do that. You suggest there's a running commentary around me at the moment which is not surprising considering our league position. I don't have to respond to that or get involved with that, it just doesn't interest or affect me.

What is important to me is my responsibility to...as I said, people can choose to ignore it, but we're still in a great position this year, I'm going to push this group of players and everyone at the club to not lose sight of the fact that this is a tough spot we're in but the possibilities of us doing something special are still there if we work our way through it.

Do you feel you've had enough backing from the board this January?

Everyone is trying their utmost. I don’t think anyone is working against me. I don’t think anyone wants me to fail. I think everyone genuinely at the football club… this kind of situation is a tough gig for a manager. You can be very isolated, you can be very vulnerable. I don’t feel that. The people I work with are doing their utmost to try and help me guide us through this. I don’t feel like anyone is blocking that. From my perspective my focus is firmly on the things I can control which is making sure I prepare a team for a really big game tomorrow.

Are you confident about getting a new signing in this transfer window?

I’d be disingenuous if I said anything other than fight now there’s nothing imminent but that doesn’t mean there isn’t opportunity being explored. Traditionally the last few days of any window tend to be pretty frenetic. I expect us to be involved in that. Does that mean anything will get concluded? I can’t commit to that because I’m a bit of a distance from it but the information and dialogue I have is we’re exploring all the opportunities to see if we can bring some help in with the finances.

There have been reports about the lower percentage of wages at Spurs in relation to revenue, compared to other clubs, do you think that plays a part?

I’d be overstepping my mark if I started commenting on that. I’m not within proximity of the financials to be able to give a real clear answer on that. It’s not something that I have any exposure to. I wouldn’t be able to know how our wage bill stacks up against anyone else’s. At every club I’ve been at I’ve never asked those questions. That doesn’t mean I haven’t known because some clubs do volunteer that and give you a clear picture. All I can focus on is right now the club is trying everything in its power to get at least some help in for the players. That’s where my focus is. The topic of the finances, it’s better that other people at the club speak about it.

With Micky coming back, what does he bring to this team and how wary are you of bring him straight back in?

I am not wary because he has got to come back at some stage. We can keep him training forever and never play and he maybe gets injured, that’s not how it works. We’ve done everything in our power and we did last time too. Last time he probably played more than he should have him in that first game but again hindsight and the circumstances around that game without rewriting history were pretty challenging anyway, but he’s ticked every box, worked awfully hard and been given clearance by the medical team. Invariably when you’ve had one injury it means you are always going to take a conservative approach, which we have and at some stage he has to play.

What we’ve got to make sure is to just manage his minutes now to give him every chance to grow into it, but he’s enormous for us because A he is a fantastic player, and B with a lot of these guys who will come back, they are just champing at the bit to help so there is an energy there, a positivity there and for the guys who have been on the grind for a while, just having him training is a boost. Having him out there tomorrow I think even for our supporters it just gives you some energy and renewed energy, particularly for the core group of players who have got us through the last two and a half months, I think it gives us an enormous lift. So, really happy to have him back and tomorrow night is a good game for him to get back into it, European football, so a good way to reintegrate him in and I’m sure he’ll do well.

How is Djed Spence?

Djed will be fine for the weekend. He is not available tomorrow so I was just talking about tomorrow’s team.

I just mean because he missed the game?

Yeah he’ll be fine for the weekend, but him and Reguilon are obviously not involved for tomorrow.

With Lucas Bergvall, how would you say he's dealt with the pressure and demands of playing at this level?

Outstandingly well. We lose sight of the fact that he's only 18-years-old but also his previous senior experience is in the Swedish league so he's coming from a different league, obviously a step up in the league level. Different country, different environment. As an 18-year-old for him to be taking such a massive responsibility on his shoulders to not only play but also try to make an impact for the team, I think has been outstanding.

I'll keep saying it, that as tough as it's been and it's been tough, we're going to get so much benefit from the likes of him and Archie coming through this really not like 18-year-olds, but like men, wanting to help the club through this process, once we hit some calmer waters we'll truly see them flourish even more. He's been outstanding and it's a credit to him as much as a person as it is as a player that he's tackled this in the way that he has.

With Dejan Kulusevski, how important have his qualities as a leader been off the pitch as well?

Hugely so. That was the other area of growth for us that we haven't had Vicario and Romero, part of our leadership group, for large parts of this season and it's fallen on Sonny and Madders' shoulders to carry that load and I think through this time, Deki and Solanke in particular, I think both of them in performances but just with their general demeanour around the place have really taken on the responsibility of leading us through this. Deki has been outstanding, with his football but also his mentality and again it's a great area for us of growth. When all our players come back, I'm sure they're going to feel like they've grown through this period as well. In a difficult season, Deki has been outstanding all year and really important for us.

What can you say about Elfsborg?

Obviously a bit different scenario for them to us. They've had their off-season so they've probably got a hell of a lot of enthusiasm and looking forward to a new season. They had a great result last week against Nice. A good team, well structured and organised, hard-working and pretty direct in their play. They're going to challenge us with their style of play. They're in a good position to make the knockout stages of the Europa League which will be a great achievement for them. It will be a good challenge for us tomorrow night.

Tottenham boss on transfers, Maddison and new injuries

I don’t listen to no-one because I know the truth. I see the truth my side. It’s not important what people say. It has never been actually. The league is very bad and the game on Sunday was tough to lose but you have to stay clear minded and focus on the goals. We have done mistakes, don’t get me wrong. We have done a lot of mistakes. We are 10/11 fit players in four competitions and that’s not OK and that’s why the team is paying that price in the league especially. You can look at the manager and the players but it’s bigger than that, it’s everything involved.

We play three games a week with nine or ten players. That’s all I need to say, it’s nothing more than that. I think everybody has got to watch the picture and ask themselves how we came this far. That’s it.

Yeah, that’s what I’m saying [the squad not being big enough], we are 11 players playing three games a week for a long period. I don’t see any other team doing that. That’s the only thing we should look at.

Everyone is trying their utmost. I don’t think anyone is working against me. I don’t think anyone wants me to fail. I think everyone genuinely at the football club… this kind of situation is a tough gig for a manager. You can be very isolated, you can be very vulnerable. I don’t feel that. He's obviously a long-term investment for the football club and we've got to do the right thing by him.

Because we had games when we showed perfect football. Football that not many teams can play in the world. We played beautiful games against United, against City 4-0 so I think he is the right man. We play for him. We want to win for him and to be honest we have similar ideas. I am very positive as a guy and I always want to play that football he wants. I have to fight for him because I believe in that football too. Yes, I think he’s the right man.

I’d be disingenuous if I said anything other than fight now there’s nothing imminent but that doesn’t mean there isn’t opportunity being explored. Traditionally the last few days of any window tend to be pretty frenetic. I expect us to be involved in that. Does that mean anything will get concluded? Who was missing from Tottenham training and which players were back and involved

Description

Tottenham Hotspur took to the training pitches on Wednesday ahead of their Europa League match with Elfsborg.

Ange Postecoglou's side can secure a top eight place and miss out the extra play-off round with a positive result at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday evening against the Swedish visitors. Spurs need to get back to winning ways amid a tough run of results in the Premier League especially with Postecoglou's future the subject of plenty of speculation.

Here are the four things we spotted from Tottenham's training session at Hotspur Way.

Who was involved

Amid all of the injuries it was at least heartening for Spurs and Postecoglou to have a number of players back and involved despite a few scares.

Micky van de Ven continues to be involved in training after his return from his hamstring injury, while Guglielmo Vicario appeared to be going through all the same drills as the rest of the goalkeepers after his return from a fractured ankle.

There were concerns over Richarlison, who came off with groin discomfort in the second half of the defeat to Leicester, while Yves Bissouma was an unused substitute despite Spurs needing him on the day. However, both players were involved in Wednesday's session.

Postecoglou will provide an update on all four and which of them can play a part during his press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Who was missing

Still the area of concern for Postecoglou is how many players are missing.

Long term absentee Wilson Odobert was not involved and neither were Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson. Among the new concerns, James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr and Djed Spence were all absent from the session as was Sergio Reguilon, even though he and Spence aren't registered for the Europa League.

Cristian Romero could be seen training in the gym ahead of and during the session and unless he joined in after the period when the media were allowed to watch then the Argentine looks to be further behind Van de Ven in the return stakes.

What they did

The 15 minutes of the training session the media get to see is normally pretty light although with the current schedule most sessions are light or recovery based right now.

The Spurs players came out and did some warm-ups and stretches before going into passing and volley drills in pairs. The group then moved across to begin a training session that was mainly attack vs defence with one side containing Van de Ven, Radu Dragusin and Pedro Porro in the same backline up against Richarlison and Mikey Moore among others.

Which youngsters were involved

With so many players out injured there were plenty of young Spurs academy players involved in the session including Malachi Hardy, Maeson King, Dane Cassanova, Callum Olusesi, Damola Ajayi and also strikers Will Lankshear and Dane Scarlett.

The latter likely can't be included though as after returning from his Oxford loan any appearance for Spurs would rule him out of another loan move, as you cannot play for three clubs within one season.

Ange Postecoglou has been handed a huge double injury boost ahead of Tottenham's Europa League tie at home to Elfsborg.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and defender Micky van de Ven were both spotted in training on Wednesday as the squad prepare for the final league phase match of the season. Van de Ven has been out with a hamstring injury but made his return to the grass at the back end of last week. The Dutchman last featured for the Lilywhites against Chelsea on December 8.

Meanwhile, Vicario has not played since he injured his ankle during a 4-0 win over Manchester City on November 23. The 28-year-old underwent surgery after fracturing his right ankle but has now resumed training alongside fellow goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Antonin Kinsky.

Postecoglou will face the media on Wednesday afternoon and provide an update on how close the pair are to being available again. Yves Bissouma and Richarlison were also seen training with the squad at Hotspur Way, although there was no Djed Spence, James Maddison or Pape Matar Sarr. Cristian Romero, who was not present, was doing work in the gym, it is understood.

After Elfsborg Tottenham face Brentford on Sunday, before travelling to Liverpool next Thursday for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. Tottenham know a win against Elfsborg on Thursday night will secure their place in the Europa League round of 16. Three points would secure a top eight finish and that would mean the club do not play in Europe again until March.

Anything but victory, however, could mean Spurs finish outside the top eight. If this does happen, the club would play two extra games in February in the shape of the knock play-offs.
