There's a real maturity at only 18. We asked him to play left-back, he has never played that position in his life but does it with a real efficiency and calmness. I am so excited by Archie and that's another positive for us that we have another 18-year-old who just plays and no one mentions that he is 18, they just measure his performance and, like I said, I am asking him to do different jobs. It would probably be more comfortable for him if he was settled in one position but he is playing football at a really high level in Europe and the Premier League. That's going to set us up really well for the player that he is going to become. I thought Lucas [Bergvall] was really good when he came on last night, he made an impact. With everything else we're building, there is some real excitement around the young players as well.

Look, I don't know how many ways I can say this. I understand it. Look, there's plenty of room for pragmatism in walks of life and in football as well. But I'm just not interested in it. I don't know why I need to change my approach to be like everyone else wants me to be. I'll continue to push this team to be a bit different, to play football in a different way and maybe when I'm long gone you'll all pine for my entertainment, and you'll have had your fill of pragmatism. But look, if we were pragmatic I'd say at 2-0 up at City away, we'd have probably settled and we wouldn't have got the victory we did and made it a special moment for our club. I always think of the possibilities of what could be if we continue down this road, rather than holding on to what we have. Because at the moment what do we have? We don't have a hell of a lot. We haven't achieved anything yet, we haven't had success, we haven't done all the things we want to do. So if I start being pragmatic now, maybe we'll never get there. Last night we weren't at our highest level but, jeez, I thought for 20 minutes we were as exciting as we've been since I've been here. I loved our last 20 minutes of the first half. We should have got a third goal to kill the game off but we were exciting to watch. And that's what I want.

We're always planning, planning for every scenario. A lot of it will depend on where we are as a squad at that time. Between now and then, it is only really Romero and Van de Ven who will be back in that time frame, but Richy will hopefully be back in the New Year and we will just assess where we are squad wise but certainly, with Johan [Lange] I've already had a number of meetings for a strategy in January. I think last year we did a little bit of business which ended up helping us, but nothing concrete now because January is always tricky and it depends on where we are squad-wise.

word answer boosts Tottenham as Leeds United injury call looms

Manor Solomon's Leeds United loan spell finally looks to be up and running after a difficult start to life at Elland Road. Joining the Championship side on loan in August, the winger has found himself in and out of Daniel Farke's team after a combination of hamstring and back issues so soon after his switch restricted his game time.

The Israeli has started the team's last three games and more than played his part in helping the West Yorkshire club move to the summit of the league table. Making an instant impact at Leeds with an assist on his home debut against Hull City, Solomon went seven games without a goal contribution before really announcing himself to Leeds fans at Swansea City last Sunday in a 4-3 victory.

Scoring his team's first of the afternoon with a simple finish from close range following Dan James' pass, he would then double his tally and put the team 3-2 up in the 73rd minute with a clinical strike that went in off the underside of the crossbar. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Solomon revealed that his brace meant a lot to him and stated "it feels like a beginning for me".

Solomon's performance was enough to see him remain in the team for Wednesday evening's fixture against Luton Town, a match Leeds went on to win 3-0. Farke's team are well stocked for wingers at the moment and their quality in the final third was highlighted by the fact that James dropped down to the bench despite his two assists at Swansea.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Farke hailed Solomon's recent performances and mentioned that his wingers are unlikely to play the full match all the time as he tries to distribute the minutes.

"He had his first start after injury in the QPR game that we won at home. It was probably his best performance after the injury," he said, as reported by The Yorkshire Post. "Then he had two starts for his country against France and Belgium – proper opponents and really good performances. On Sunday just over 70 minutes and probably his best performance in the shirt, at least his most effective.

"The winger positions, it's quite important to have an eye on them in such a busy period because you have lots of high-speed running so it's not likely a winger will play all three games over 90 minutes. We have to share the minutes a little bit and to pay attention to what is necessary and which winger looks ready to go and recovered.

"It's good that we have quality and we have the choices. I'm quite pleased all of them are back. Largie [Ramazani] will need more time to be in the starting line-up but he's an option for a few minutes at least."

Despite Farke's pre-match comments, Solomon did go on to play the full 90 minutes of their latest win and he was awarded a mark of seven out of ten in Leeds Live's player ratings. "More of a creator than a finisher tonight. Served up a number of chances throughout the evening with his pace and trickery out wide. Roamed around a lot too," was the verdict of Leeds United correspondent Beren Cross.

Farke was asked in his post-match press conference if his winger had picked up a knock during the win but he ruled out a possible injury. “Manor is okay. Lots of load for him in the last few days. No injury. Felt like cramp,” he admitted.

Going on what the German said ahead of the game, Solomon could potentially drop down to the bench for Saturday's trip to Blackburn Rovers. James and Ramazani had to settle for a place amongst the substitutes on Wednesday evening and that could leave Solomon and Wilfried Gnonto at risk ahead of the trip to Ewood Park.

The last thing Farke and Leeds want to do with Solomon right now is push him too much after three successive starts. The Spurs man has endured terrible luck on the injury front over the past couple of seasons, notably only playing six times in his debut campaign at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium due to a knee problem.

At a time when Leeds are sitting top of the pile in the Championship and pushing for a Premier League return, having Solomon at the top of his game is only going to help the club over the coming months as they look to achieve their lofty ambitions. It is only a good thing for Tottenham as well as what comes next for Solomon in a Spurs shirt remains unclear.

Every word Ange Postecoglou said on Son's lack of goals and his exasperated set piece answer

Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to reporters after Tottenham's 2-2 draw with Roma in the Europa League and we've got every single word he said.

Tottenham were given a penalty just three minutes in when Pape Matar Sarr was tripped in the box after running on to a Brennan Johnson cutback. Son Heung-min sent the goalkeeper Mile Svilar the wrong way with his spot kick. Roma grabbed an equaliser when Paulo Dybala's free-kick was headed on by Evan N'Dicka and looped in off the crossbar, but Brennan Johnson put Spurs back into the lead when he fired home a low cross from Dejan Kulusevski for his ninth goal of the season.

Both sides hit the woodwork either side of the break and in all Spurs managed it three times, while Roma had the ball in the net three times but VAR ruled them all out for clear offsides.

The visitors did find a late equaliser when Mats Hummels struck from close range moments after Fraser Forster had made a stunning save to deny Mancini's volley.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Postecoglou after the game. Here's every word from the Australian's press conference at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

How frustrating is it that your team didn't push through their advantage in that second half?

Yeah frustration with the way the game ended. Yeah we should have killed it off a lot earlier. We should have killed it off in the first half with the chances we had. At 2-1 you're always keeping the opposition in the game and they're throwing men forward, so disappointing we weren't able to see the game out. Ultimately we're still in a decent position.

You only made four changes and your subs came quite late, are you being hindered in terms of options with the injuries you've got?

It is what it is. We've been in this situation for quite a while. We are fairly thin in terms of squad depth at the moment. We had four kids on the bench tonight so we couldn't even fill the quota. It is what it is, we've been dealing with this for quite a while and I still think we certainly had enough of the game and enough clear cut chances to win the game.

Your team is playing well, you beat Man City and you had the chances to beat Roma tonight, so will you enjoy these games coming thick and fast now?

That's going to be our schedule and we understand that. It's challenging with the absences we have at the moment in terms of the squad, but I think tonight our football was still good but we just lacked a bit, that clinical edge to finish the game off. Overall this whole European competition, we've had some challenges within the first five games so we're in a strong position and that's the main thing.

How many points do you think you'll need to finish in the top eight?

I have no idea. There's three games to go and we're in a pretty decent position. You try to win every game you can and see where that takes you. I think it'll probably be clearer after the next round but it's all pretty tight from what I understand. That's what you expect.

Is there any way to improve the defending from set pieces?

I don't know what to say to that. I think that's the third set piece goal we've conceded from this season in about 20 games. I get it, but I don't know know what to say. Let's move on.

Sonny got a goal but it's only his fourth of the season. Is it fair to say he is lacking confidence in front of goal at the moment?

I don’t know if he’s lacking confidence. Sonny’s had a disrupted year for us, so that doesn’t help. Yeah, he had some good chances tonight to get the goal and he’s getting in those areas. Look, he’s got the quality to take those chances and we know he’s done it consistently for almost a decade, but he’s had a disrupted season being in and out. You can see he is getting back to full fitness now, which is the main thing for us.

We’re quite thin in those wide areas, so he’s playing and we’ve got to make sure we are careful with him, Brennan and Timo because they are the only wingers we’ve got left and will have for the foreseeable future. I thought tonight, it wasn’t just Sonny. There were quite a few really good chances, we hit the post three times as well and a couple cleared off the line. I still felt there were a couple of occasions where a bit more composure would have finished the game off.

You had no doubts about Fraser Forster but he made some good saves, will that be good for his confidence?

I don’t think he’s lacking in confidence. He is an experienced guy and has probably thought to himself that, that is why he is there, if needed to come in and be that reliable goalkeeper for us. It’s helped he’s already played this year, it wasn’t his first game. He’s played his part tonight and it’s just disappointing we weren’t able to capitalise on the football we played to get the three points. I don’t think he’s lacking in confidence, but always good for him to least pull off a couple of big saves for us tonight and get him back into he group.

That was great entertainment again but is the priority of the next three games to win ahead of artistic merit and make sure you are above the dotted line?

No (smiles). Why can’t it just be entertaining? Isn’t it why we all come? Would you really prefer us to sketch out a couple of 0-0 draws and a 1-0 win and we get through. I don’t know. I would much rather we’re exciting to watch and maybe it is edge of the seat stuff and sometimes we don’t get the reward, like we could have tonight, but no, if you want those kind of games, there are plenty in world football you can watch every weekend. I’d like to think when you tune into us you’ll be entertained.

Spurs welcomed Claudio Ranieri's Serie A side knowing that a win would push them into a strong position in the big Europa League table. A top eight finish in those standings brings with it the opportunity to head straight into the knockout stages and avoid the extra play-off legs that come early next year.

Postecoglou was without goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore, as well as the suspended Will Lankshear, with Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon not registered to play in the Europa League. Rodrigo Bentancur was available as his seven-match ban is only for domestic matches and he was joined by Archie Gray at left-back, Fraser Forster and Brennan Johnson in four changes from the 4-0 triumph at the Etihad Stadium.

Tottenham were awarded a penalty just three minutes into the European clash. Tottenham drew 2-2 with Roma in the Europa League on Thursday night and here are our Spurs player ratings from the match.

Spurs welcomed Claudio Ranieri's Serie A side knowing that a win would push them into a strong position in the big Europa League table. A top eight finish in those standings brings with it the opportunity to head straight into the knockout stages and avoid the extra play-off legs that come early next year.

Postecoglou had to pick a team without goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore, as well as the suspended Will Lankshear, while Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon are not registered to play in the Europa League.

Rodrigo Bentancur was available though as his seven-match ban is only for domestic matches and he was joined by Archie Gray at left-back, Fraser Forster and Brennan Johnson in four changes from the 4-0 triumph at the Etihad Stadium.

This time Spurs took the lead just three minutes into the European clash. Pape Matar Sarr was brought down in the box after running on to a Brennan Johnson cutback and although the referee waved it away, he was told to look at his pitchside monitor. The spot kick was duly awarded and Son Heung-min sent the goalkeeper Mile Svilar the wrong way with his penalty.

Roma grabbed an equaliser when Paulo Dybala's free-kick was headed on by Evan N'Dicka and looped in off the crossbar. Brennan Johnson put Spurs back into the lead when he fired home a low cross from Dejan Kulusevski with a crisp, low first-time finish for his ninth goal of the season.

Both sides hit the woodwork either side of the break and Spurs managed it three times, while Roma had the ball in the net three times but VAR ruled them all out for clear offsides.

The visitors found a late leveller though when Mats Hummels slammed home from close range moments after Forster had made a stunning save to deny Mancini.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings:

Fraser Forster

Couldn't get near N'Dicka's looping header which was well away from him as it hit the bar. He made a couple of smart low stops from Dybala in the first half. Bailed out Porro late in the game after his weak back header, saving from Dovbyk. Made an amazing save from Mancini's close range volley even though he would have seen it late. Couldn't do anything about Hummel's late leveller. 8

Pedro Porro

Blocked an Angelino shot which deflected up on to the crossbar and he hit the woodwork himself with a free-kick at the other end moments later. Almost gifted Dovbyk a late equaliser only for Forster to save and was nowhere near Angelino's cross for the leveller. 5

Radu Dragusin

Defended solidly on the whole but the defence will be disappointed at the chances they conceded. 6

Ben Davies

Put his body on the line time and time again but could only watch the late leveller as Bissouma played everyone onside. 7

Archie Gray

Playing at left-back, he once again put in a mature performance and whipped in a couple of dangerous crosses one of which Solanke sent against the crossbar. 7

Pape Matar Sarr

Made a great run into the box to win the early spot kick. His passing ranged from sloppy with some short stuff to glorious with some longer efforts. Showed plenty of his trademark energy before coming off. 7

Rodrigo Bentancur

Lost N'Dicka for the Roma equaliser. Wasn't quite on his usual form, albeit with some good moments and looked tired before coming off. 6

Dejan Kulusevski

Fired up for the game and his low cross for Johnson's first-half goal was perfect. Hit the right-hand post with a low effort across the keeper. Had a shot blocked in the Roma box early in the second half. Tired a bit as the game wore on and he needs to recover quickly for the visit of Fulham. 7

Brennan Johnson

Picked out Sarr well in the build-up to the early spot penalty. Had a shot blocked inside the Roma box but made no mistake with a first-time finish from Kulusevski's low cross. Got a rocket from Postecoglou just before the break when he played the ball back instead of turning and getting the ball forward. Was less effective in the second half. 6

Dominic Solanke

Forced the keeper into a save with an acrobatic overhead kick after Johnson's effort was blocked. Had a second half shot saved when a pass to Maddison in space in the box was on. Headed a Gray cross against the crossbar in a busy performance. 6

Son Heung-min

Sent the keeper the wrong way with his early penalty. Blazed over the loose ball after Kulusevski hit the post. Threatened at times but not quite in his full rhythm. 6

Subs

James Maddison

A couple of nice moments and could have scored if Solanke had given him the ball in space in the box. 6

Yves Bissouma

Brought fresh legs but played everyone onside for the late Roma leveller. 5

Lucas Bergvall

Came on late in the game and made a few defensive headers from corners. N/A

Timo Werner

Put Gray away for a cross that Solanke headed against the bar. N/A

Ange Postecoglou has named a strong Tottenham team to host Roma in the Europa League on Thursday night with only four changes.

Spurs take on Claudio Ranieri's side knowing that a win would put them into a strong position in the big Europa League table in which a top eight finish brings the opportunity to head straight into the knockout stages and avoid the extra play-off legs early next year.

Postecoglou is without goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who joins a list of unavailable players that includes Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore, as well as the suspended Will Lankshear, while Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon are not registered to play in the Europa League.

Rodrigo Bentancur is available though as his seven-match ban is only for domestic matches and he comes into the side along with Archie Gray at left-back and Fraser Forster is in goal in order to start building up his sharpness and rhythm as he replaces Vicario in the months ahead.

Brennan Johnson starts the match after coming off the bench to score against Manchester City in the 4-0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium.

Here's the team Postecoglou has selected to take on the visitors from Serie A.

Forster; Porro, Dragusin, Davies, Gray; Sarr, Bentancur, Kulusevski; Johnson, Solanke, Son. Subs: Austin, Whiteman, Hardy, King, Udogie, Bissouma, Maddison, Olusesi, Bergvall, Williams-Barnett, Werner.

Ange Postecoglou Tottenham masterplan was already working before Man City win as Liverpool warned

Submitted by daniel on

It has been a classic case of an up and down season for Tottenham Hotspur so far. Inconsistency in the team has been rife, with a win, lose, win, lose sequence leaving fans tearing their hair out.

Ange Postecoglou oversaw arguably his best result as Tottenham head coach last week when Spurs demolished reigning Premier League champions Manchester City 4-0. It was City's first defeat at home in 53 matches and a real statement of intent from Spurs.

Now, though, Postecoglou's side must back it up, by not dropping points as they take on Fulham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. Consistency is the key thing for Spurs now if they are to maintain their hopes of finishing in the top four and even challenging for the title in the coming years.

It looked like Postecoglou's masterplan finally came to fruition against City, but it appears to have been working all along, if you look at the raw stats.

The CIES Football Observatory have looked at Wyscout data around every team's attacking intent, looking at where shots are taken and conceded from in the danger zone (the central rectangle of the penalty area).

According to the data, Spurs have taken the second-highest number of shots inside the danger area at 6.91 per match. Only City have registered more in the Premier League.

Tottenham do concede more at 4.45 per game than top four rivals Liverpool, Man City and Aston Villa, although they concede less than Arsenal and Chelsea have done this season.

It leaves Spurs at 0.38 points worse off in the league per match this season than they should be. Based off that data, Postecoglou's team would be a point behind Liverpool (who are 0.52 points better off per match than expected) and a couple of points behind Man City (who are 0.13 points worse off per match than expected).

The statistics point to Postecoglou doing a fine job with Spurs and they should be higher in the table than they are. But it's down to the players to get the job done on the pitch on a regular basis and ensure results like the City one is not a flash in the pan.
