Tottenham prepare Β£52m bid for former Premier League star - Sporting News
Description

Tottenham Hotspur started their season off well under Thomas Frank, but the team hasn't had the most consistent performances.

Tottenham are coming off a 1-2 loss to Aston Villa, and the team is preparing to take on Monaco in the Champions League.

Frank is likely to make changes in the January transfer window, and one of the biggest priorities seems to be a striker.

Richarlison and Dominic Solanke have struggled with injuries since coming to Tottenham, and Frank is eager to bring in a proven goalscorer and physical player.

The club has been linked with multiple strikers, but a former Premier League striker is firmly on Frank's radar.

Which former Premier League striker is Tottenham considering?

According to Fichajes, Tottenham are willing to pay Β£52m for Ivan Toney, who previously excelled at Brentford.

The Englishman currently plays for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, but he is reportedly open to a return to English football, especially with the World Cup coming up.

Toney moved to Saudi Arabia in 2024, and he has had a good record of 38 goals in 54 games. The striker was also a big success at Brentford, scoring 67 goals in 128 games for the club.

Toney has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, although according to the report, Tottenham have the most interest in the striker.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. AZ Alkmaar live score: UEFA Europa League result, stats, highlights as Spurs bid for turnaround

Description

Tottenham Hotspur will aim to keep their season alive when they face AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 second leg.

Spurs are trailing 1-0 following the first leg in the Netherlands last week, so Ange Postecoglou and his players know that anything but a win on home turf will see them eliminated.

The spirited comeback to draw with Bournemouth at the weekend showed the players are prepared to graft for their manager, but another disappointing performance here would end Postecoglou's hopes of delivering on his promise to win a trophy this season and ruin their best chance of qualifying for European football for 2025/26.

The Sporting News will provide live score updates below.

Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are still sidelined, while Fraser Forster, Antonin Kinsky, Sergio Reguilon, Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner are all ineligible.

Description

Tottenham will try to bounce back from the latest setback of a relentlessly trying season when they host Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Spurs suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first round of their UEFA Europa League last-16 clash with AZ Alkmaar.

European success is the only remaining avenue for Ange Postecoglou to salvage the campaign and next week's return against the Eredivisie side might weigh on his selection this weekend.

Bournemouth are enjoying a superb season under Andoni Iraola and are firmly in the hunt for the European places. They come into this one on the back of consecutive top-flight defeats to Wolves and Brighton, albeit having avenged the former loss in the FA Cup.

The Sporting News takes a look at the latest team news and predicted starting lineups for this Premier League match.

Dominic Solanke made his return from a knee injury against AZ but his substitute cameo was cut short when he collided with goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro and had to come off. "It's a knock, so hopefully it settles down pretty quickly," Postecoglou said.

Ben Davies has returned to training after missing Tottenham's past four matches and could be involved, while the same applies to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, who were unused substitutes in the Netherlands following their injury-ruined campaigns.

Dejan Kulusevski missed out in midweek with a calf injury and is set to remain sidelined alongside Richarlison and long-term absentee Radu Dragusin.

Ilya Zabarnyi serves the final match of his three-match suspension, although Ryan Christie could be in contention following a groin injury.

Top scorer Justin Kluivert featured from the bench in the FA Cup fifth-round clash with Wolves and will return to the starting lineup. Remarkably, 10 of Kluivert's 12 Premier League goals this term have come away from home.

Enes Unal, Marcos Senesi, Julian Araujo and Adam Smith remain on the sidelines

Tottenham Hotspur head to the Netherlands to face AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie.

Spurs' domestic campaign is effectively over following earlier cup exits and the fact they sit 13th in the Premier League standings, but this competition offers manager Ange Postecoglou a final chance to make good on his vow of delivering silverware in his second full season in charge.

Standing in their way in the first knockout round are AZ, a team who lost to Spurs in the league phase of this competition back in October but navigated a tough knockout playoff against Galatasaray to reach this point.

Will Tottenham sack Ange Postecoglou? Potential candidates as next Spurs manager after shock Leicester City loss

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Ange Postecoglou is facing increasing pressure amid Tottenham's largely wretched run of form.

Spurs suffered a fourth consecutive Premier League loss on January 26 as relegation-threatened Leicester City came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The result left the home side in 15th place in the standings, only eight points above the relegation zone.

Postecoglou has earned some respite thanks to a 3-2 win at Hoffenheim, which boosted their chances of going through to the UEFA Europa League knockout phase, and they hold a 1-0 lead over Liverpool in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup ahead of the second leg on February 6. Those two competitions give the Australian coach a chance of delivering on his promise to win a trophy in his second season at the club.

Yet with their league form worryingly suspect and potentially difficult games to come against Brentford and Manchester United, plus an FA Cup fourth-round tie away to Aston Villa, Postecoglou's position looks far from secure.

Will Tottenham sack Ange Postecoglou?

There is no clear indication yet that Spurs will dismiss Postecoglou, but the pressure on the manager is reaching critical levels as a result of the defeat to Leicester. Some oddsmakers were pricing the Australian at evens to be the next Premier League coach to leave his club.

The manner of the loss, in front of watching chairman Daniel Levy, was particularly concerning. Spurs conceded twice in the first five minutes of the second half, something they last did against Liverpool back in 1997, and then barely posed a threat to Jakub Stolarczyk's goal. They managed just two shots on target in the second half and fashioned only one Opta-defined 'big chance', with their eight total attempts in that half totalling a value of just 0.28 expected goals (xG), highlighting the speculative nature of their shots.

There were loud boos from the home fans at the final whistle as they made their feelings clear at the end of a fourth-straight league loss. While Postecoglou still has the backing of some supporters, there is no doubt that patience is wearing thin.

The question is, who could replace him?

Next Tottenham manager candidates

While it remains highly speculative, a few names have emerged as potentially strong candidates to succeed Postecoglou at Spurs.

Edin Terzic

Edin Terzic is among the favourites should Spurs seek a new manager. He led Borussia Dortmund to the UEFA Champions League final last season before leaving the role in June, having won 55 of his 96 games in charge in what was his second spell in charge.

Andoni Iraola

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is producing impressive results with the Cherries, so it is not surprising to see him linked with Spurs. It would likely cost a sizeable fee in terms of compensation to get him away from one of the surprise packages in this Premier League season, but Iraola would probably be tempted at least to speak with the club.

Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso is a more optimistic option given the success he is enjoying with Bayer Leverkusen and the fact that he has been linked with a possible move to Real Madrid to succeed Carlo Ancelotti, but Spurs would likely at least ask the question of whether he might be interested in moving to north London.

Kieran McKenna

Ipswich Town got their first league win of the season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Kieran McKenna has won plenty of admirers for his work at the club despite them being mired in a relegation battle. Linked with the Chelsea job before Enzo Maresca was appointed, McKenna would more likely be tempted to move at the end of the season.

Ange Postecoglou should restore Antonin Kinsky to the lineup after the keeper missed the game at Hoffenheim due to being ineligible in the Europa League.

Tottenham vs. Leicester Prediction

On paper, Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to beat Leicester City at home. However, the long injury list and hectic schedule has hampered their season and sees them languishing in 15th place.

Leicester have struggled for wins this season but their visit to North London represents an opportunity to get three valuable points.

Going by recent form, it is difficult to predict who will emerge victorious. Tottenham might eke out a win given the depth of quality.

Ange Postecoglou on the brink of Tottenham sack after Everton defeat

Submitted by daniel on
Picture

Description

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou faces the real possibility of being sacked before the end of January following a dismal start to 2025.

The Australian coach is expected to speak with the club hierarchy in the coming days with Spurs currently 15th in the Premier League rankings after a 3-2 loss away at Everton.

Injuries have caused major issues for Postecoglou in recent months, despite his confidence of being able to lead the club to a trophy in 2025, and his tenure could now be cut short.

MORE: All the latest Tottenham news | Premier League schedule for 2024/25 | Latest Premier League top scorer rankings

Defeat at Goodison Park means Postecoglou's charges are now winless in their last six league games with just one victory in their last 10 league outings stretching back to November.

Postecoglou claimed he is ready to fight on over the situation with a rousing post-match message on Merseyside

"The situation we're in, will eventually dissipate. I certainly hope and believe it will. We'll give ourselves the opportunity to get consistency in performance and results. I haven't lost belief or determination to turn it around and the players showed in the second half they haven't either," he said.

Ange Postecoglou Tottenham contract

Postecoglou signed a four-year contract at Spurs after arriving at the club at the start of the 2023/24 season with its expiry set at June 2027.

Club chairman Daniel Levy would need to strike a settlement over compensation if he opts to sack Postecoglou.

The crucial factor which could decide Postecoglou's fate is Tottenham's Carabao Cup semifinal second-leg clash at Liverpool on February 6, after securing a 1-0 win in the first leg.

With Tottenham focused on reaching the final, and potentially ending their 17-year wait for a trophy, a change could be viewed as a risk.

Who could replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham?

Despite ongoing pressure surrounding Postecoglou's role at Tottenham, there has been limited speculation over who could replace him, if Levy hits the eject button.

Former Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic is the rumoured frontrunner, with the German manager currently unattached, following his exit from Signal Iduna Park in June 2024.

Gareth Southgate is another possible option, with the ex-England boss currently enjoying a break from the game, after stepping down as Three Lions chief after their UEFA Euro 2024 final defeat.

Everton vs. Tottenham lineups, team news

Armando Broja is set to miss up to three months with ankle ligament damage, meaning Dominic Calvert-Lewin will lead the line again after his late horror-miss in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

James Garner (back) has returned to training after a lengthy absence and could be involved on the bench as Dwight McNeil, Tim Iroegbunam and Youssef Chermiti remain sidelined alongside veteran skipper Seamus Coleman.

Everton predicted starting line-up (4-5-1, right to left): Pickford (GK) β€” Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko β€” Lindstrom, Gueye, Mangala, Doucoure, Ndiaye β€” Calvert-Lewin

Injured: Broja (ankle), McNeil (knee), Chermiti, Iroegbunam, Coleman

Suspended: None

Postecoglou's weighty injury list could be supplemented by Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson, who each suffered setbacks during the Arsenal game.

Bissouma was substituted at halftime and James Maddison could start in his place alongside the in-form Lucas Bergvall.

Rodrigo Bentancur could also miss this game after suffering a concussion, while five senior defensive absentees still account for the bulk of Tottenham's problems.

Tottenham predicted starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Kinsky (GK) β€” Porro, Gray, Dragusin, Spence β€” Maddison, Sarr, Bergvall β€” Kulusvski, Solanke, Son.

Injured: Vicario (ankle), Bentancur (concussion), Udogie (thigh), Davies (thigh), Romero (thigh), Van de Ven (thigh), Werner (hamstring), Odobert (thigh), Bissouma (doubt), Johnson (calf)

Suspended: None

Everton vs. Tottenham Prediction

Tottenham have only lost one of their last 24 matches against Everton in the Premier League, which gives them a psychological boost ahead of this clash.

Despite their torrid run of form, Tottenham should narrowly edge out Everton, bringing an end to their winless streak in the Premier League.

Prediction: Everton 1-2 Tottenham
