Roy Keane gives brutal assessment of Spurs midfielder

On the latest episode of the stick to football podcast, Manchester United legend Roy Keane has given a typically scathing verdict of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison, which has caused some controversy.

Roy Keane with some harsh words regarding Spurs midfielder James Maddison

Speaking on the podcast, Keane said: "I'm on about [currently injured] players who will have an impact [when they return]. Listen, we saw Maddison at Tamworth, he was taken off. Tamworth are non league. People say Maddison's the man - when's he going to step up to the plate? He got relegated with Leicester - about to get relegated with Spurs!

Maddison isn't bad - when he's not at the Darts - but let me tell you: if you think he's going to come back and get Spurs back and get Spurs top six - you're in cuckoo land!

He's a good player, he's a talented player, but if you're a player in the Spurs dressing room, and Maddison's back in the squad, you wouldn't be looking [around] and going 'oh Jesus he's back today, we're going to be fine!' England had a squad of 300, and he can't even get in that! Don't kid yourselves everybody.

You [Jill Scott] praise every player, it's like [with] Boyzone, you love everybody. I've asked you to name some players [who would make an impact returning from injury], you're naming players who you go 'yeah they're [only] not bad.'

Weirdly, if Keane had made this argument last summer, it would have made more sense, and had more merit to it. This season, it feels harsh. Before injury, Maddison was having a really good season. Although he has not played in the league since the defeat to Everton, he is still Spurs' top scorer in the competition, with eight.

That too, and without his goal and assist against Hoffenheim in the Europa League, Spurs would not be having these two, extremely rare midweeks off. So, it does feel harsh. As someone who has criticised Maddison in the past, it is only fair to say he was having a really good season before the injury.

Min Son criticised again – no longer seen as Tottenham's captain

Tottenham’s season has taken an unexpected turn, and Heung-Min Son finds himself at the centre of the storm.

The South Korean forward, long considered a talisman for Spurs, is now facing criticism over his performances and leadership on the pitch.

With the North London club languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table, frustrations among fans have begun to mount.

While injuries have certainly played a role in Tottenham’s struggles, there are growing concerns that some key players are not delivering to the expected standard.

Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O'Hara has now voiced his doubts about Son's ability to lead the team, questioning whether he is the right captain to guide Tottenham through this difficult period.

Jamie O'Hara questions Heung-Min Son’s leadership

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport (h/t Tottenham News), O'Hara did not hold back in his assessment of Tottenham’s recent performances and Son’s role in the team’s lack of direction.

"When you look at Tottenham’s two recent games, this was the moment to show that they could compete. Unfortunately, they’ve shown the complete opposite. There’s no fight, no heart, no desire, and certainly no leadership," O'Hara said.

"For me, that lack of leadership comes from the manager and the captain. I hate to say it, but Son Heung-Min is not the right captain for this team anymore."

O'Hara acknowledged Son's contributions to the club over the years but stressed that he does not possess the leadership qualities required in a crisis.

"A captain should be someone who can lead from the front, someone who can grab the team by the scruff of the neck and get the team out of a hole.

"Son isn’t that, it’s time to take the captaincy off him and give it to someone else."

Just a few days ago, former Tottenham player and current Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp also shared his thoughts on Spurs' captain, stating: "I just don't see him as a captain."

Tottenham enduring a season of frustration

Tottenham’s struggles have been compounded by the departure of Harry Kane, which has left a significant void in the squad.

Despite making key signings in the summer, including Dominic Solanke, Spurs have been unable to find consistency.

With the team still in the Europa League, there is hope that their season can be salvaged.

However, if Son and his teammates fail to turn things around, the scrutiny on his captaincy and overall performances is only likely to intensify.

Spurs supporters may soon start looking elsewhere for leadership and inspiration.

Spurs want to sign highly rated Bayer Leverkusen defender

According to a report from SportBILD via SportWitness, Tottenham Hotspur have Bayer Leverkusen and Ecuador defender Piero Hincapie "on their list" for the summer transfer window.

As per reports, Spurs are interested in Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen

They state that Spurs are long term admirers of the defender, and tried to sign him in 2023. They also state that he was "very high" on the clubs list in 2024. When recently discussing the player, they said: "Internally, Bayer Leverkusen expect Piero Hincapié to bring in a fee of around €70m whenever he leaves.

The Ecuadorian, who recently extended his contract until 2029, still sees his future at the German Champions for the time being, although top clubs around Europe are monitoring him. Diego Simeone tried to get the 23-year-old to move to Atlético Madrid multiple times in the past, most recently last summer. Chelsea, Tottenham and Napoli also had him very high on their lists."

In truth, 70 million Euros for a player of his quality is reasonable, particularly with him being tied down for a further four years. He is a seriously top level player, who played a big part in Leverkusen winning a domestic double last season, as well as going undefeated in 52 of their 53 games across all competitions.

Furthermore, as well the quality of the player, the contract situation, and still being just 22 years old, his versatility is another tick in the box when it comes to being worth the investment. He has played at a high level both as a left wing-back and a left centre-back in a back three. For those worrying about how he would do in a four, he has often played in one (at centre-back) for the national team.

Seriously, seriously top player. Spurs have a number of Spanish speaking players (though, maybe fewer next season) which could help him to settle in, and given how English speaking Germany is as a nation, there is quite a likelihood that he can already speak the language pretty well.

This would be an absolutely brilliant signing, both for the short term and the long term. He is already a top class player, and has only just turned 23 years of age. Despite still being fairly young, he is a very experienced player who has played in the Champions League and at a World Cup, not looking out of place at either of those competitions. This is a no brainer if the opportunity arises.

On this day in 2019: Spurs thrash Borussia Dortmund

Description

As you can tell by the title, it is six years to the day since Tottenham Hotspur beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley in the Champions League round of 16, with perhaps the best game they had during their 18+ months playing at Wembley Stadium.

For the game, Mauricio Pochettino opted for an XI of (3412); Lloris; Foyth, Sanchez, Alderweireld; Aurier, Sissoko, Winks, Vertonghen; Eriksen; Son, Lucas. Harry Kane was injured for this game.

After a quarter of an hour, Foyth was caught on the edge of his own box, allowing Christian Pulisic a big chance, but as he drove into the box, his left footed effort from an angle was well kept out by Lloris.

Towards the end of the first half, the game began to open, with both sides having opportunities - with Eriksen and Son having the best of those chances for Spurs, and Dan-Axel Zagadou for Dortmund. Nevertheless, the sides went into the break goalless.

However, that would change after a minute of the second half. From the left hand side, a superb cross from Vertonghen was delicately volleyed in by Son, cushioning the ball into the back of the net with a sublime finish.

After that, Spurs continued to probe and be the better side, but without scoring a second. That was, until the 82nd minute. From the right hand side, a brilliant cross from Aurier superbly picked out Vertonghen, who scored a volley of his own. Quite similar to the goal he had assisted himself. Incredible performance from the Belgian.

Then, with four minutes remaining - an inswinging Eriksen corner was met by substitute Fernando Llorente, who glanced a header home, putting an ended to tie once and for good. The perfect way to end a perfect night.

In stoppage time, Erik Lamela and Vincent Wanyama appeared as substitutes, whilst Paulo Gazzaniga, Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose, and Oliver Skipp were unused subs. With Ben Davies injured for the game, Son is the only player from the match day squad who is still at the club to this day.

When looking at Leagues the starting XI currently play in, it reads as: 1x MLS, 2x Belgium Pro League, 1x Brasileirao Betano, 1x La Liga, 1x Championship, 1x Turkish Super Lig, and 3x Premier League (including Son).

It was just an all round brilliant performance. Particularly from Vertonghen, whom was not just playing as a left-back, but a left wing-back, and put in a performance as good as that - scoring, assisting, and just generally playing superbly well. What a night.

Tottenham’s future could be shaped by the development of their young prospects, with Jamie Donley, Alejo Veliz, and Yang Min-Hyeok among those aiming to break into Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

Each of these players has been gaining experience on loan, with mixed results, and their next steps will be crucial in determining their long-term roles at Spurs.

While some have thrived away from North London, others have struggled to find their feet.

Yet, despite their differing journeys, all three will reportedly be given the chance to impress during pre-season.

Postecoglou appears keen to assess his emerging talent before making any final decisions.

With the summer window approaching, speculation is growing about who will earn a place in the first team and who could be sent out for another loan or even a permanent move.

The latest reports provide insight into Tottenham’s plans for their promising youngsters.

Ange Postecoglou’s plan for Spurs' loaned talents

According to GIVEMESPORT, Jamie Donley has caught the eye during his loan spell at Leyton Orient, where he has been making steady progress.

The young attacking midfielder even drew praise from Pep Guardiola following Manchester City’s FA Cup victory over the League One side.

As a result, Donley is set to join Tottenham’s pre-season tour and will be given a chance to prove his worth.

Alejo Veliz, meanwhile, has had a tougher time in Spain. The Argentine forward has struggled for game time at Espanyol, mirroring his previous difficulties at Valencia in the second half of last season.

Despite this, Ange Postecoglou is reportedly keen to evaluate him in pre-season to determine whether he could play a role in the squad next season.

Yang Min-Hyeok who moved to QPR on loan in January, is another player under close watch. His performances in the Championship will be analysed before a decision is made on his future at Spurs.

Manor Solomon’s future in doubt

Interestingly, the report suggests that Manor Solomon might not be granted the same opportunity.

The Israeli international has performed well at Leeds United, registering six goals and seven assists across all competitions.

However, it is claimed that he is 'likely to be allowed to move on permanently' if the right offer comes in.

While Donley, Veliz, and Yang have the chance to prove themselves at Spurs, Solomon’s future seems far less certain.

The summer transfer window could be a pivotal moment for these players as Tottenham fine-tune their squad for the season ahead.

Fabio Paratici could play a key role in Tottenham’s potential managerial change

The winds of change could be blowing through North London as Tottenham faces a crucial decision regarding its managerial future.

Fabio Paratici, despite no longer holding an official role at the club, continues to wield influence behind the scenes.

His latest efforts reportedly involve pushing for a high-profile appointment that could shake up the Spurs dugout next season.

While Tottenham remains in contention for European spots, recent disappointments in domestic cup competitions have raised serious questions.

Some fans and pundits believe that changes may be inevitable, even if club officials are publicly backing their current manager.

In a team where injuries are a constant issue and supporters are questioning the leadership of current manager Ange Postecoglou, the pressure to take action is mounting on Daniel Levy.

The Spurs chairman is carefully weighing his options to improve the squad—but is Postecoglou really to blame?

Fabio Paratici pushing for Simone Inzaghi as Tottenham’s next manager

Reports suggest that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is evaluating his options for next season and could make a change in the summer.

According to InterLive, he is considering several candidates to replace the current boss, with Paratici strongly advocating for Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi.

Paratici, who now acts as a consultant for Tottenham, is said to be 'trying to convince' Daniel Levy that Inzaghi is the right man to lead the club forward.

The 48-year-old Italian has guided Inter to significant domestic and European success, making him a compelling choice.

However, Simone Inzaghi is not the only name under consideration. The report also mentions Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva as potential alternatives.

Both managers are regarded as 'internal leads' within the club, suggesting that Tottenham is keen on exploring multiple options before making a final decision.

Learning from past mistakes

Paratici has played a crucial role in shaping Tottenham’s squad, securing impressive signings during his tenure.

However, his track record in managerial appointments is more mixed. His previous picks, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, failed to bring sustained success, which may make Levy cautious about following his recommendation blindly.

Another key factor in the decision will be continuity. Daniel Levy is reportedly keen on appointing a manager who aligns with Tottenham’s current style of play, rather than opting for a complete tactical overhaul.

This approach would ensure that the team does not need to start from scratch once again. With the season entering its final stretch, speculation will only intensify.

For now, Tottenham must focus on their upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester United, with the team currently sitting in 14th place.

Spurs trying to bring in two English youngsters

According to a report from Football Transfers, Tottenham Hotspur are eying up moves for Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, and Tyler Dibling from Southampton, with internal discussions already taking place.

Both players are very young, with Wharton turning 21 earlier this month, and Dibling still being just 18-years old. We have seen Spurs focus on signing young players in recent years, with Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray having a particularly prominent role to make in recent months, despite just being teenagers.

Spurs looking at two young English players in the Premier League

Even aside from them, Destiny Udogie was signed at 20 (joining the club at 21), 22-year old Djed Spence, 21-year old Dejan Kulusevski, 22-year old Brennan Johnson, 22-year old Micky van de Ven, 20-year old Pape Sarr, and so on and so forth. Plenty of players that are crucial to the first team.

Do not be feared into thinking that this is just adding more kids for the sake of it though. These are two top class players. After joining Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers around this time last year, Wharton played so well for three months that he managed to secure a spot in England's Euros squad, despite so little time at Premier League level, making his debut in a warm up friendly in June.

This season has been a difficult one for him, after undergoing groin surgert (he'll fit right in, etc), but made his comeback in a win against Manchester United at Old Trafford recently, playing his part in Palace's second goal. It will be really interesting to see how he does from now until the end of the season.

As for Dibling, some may not see loads of goals and assists for an attacking player, but you must look beyond that. You just have to look at how dismal the team he is playing in is. In Southampton's 5-0 defeat against Spurs in December, he created a wonderful chance for Adam Armstrong, whom could not convert.

The three Spurs players that have been particularly burnt out

Description

We all know that the few Tottenham Hotspur players who have not picked up an injury this season have been ran into the ground. They are having to play two high intensity games every week without any rotation, and more often than not play the whole 90 minutes each time too.

Three Spurs players who have particularly been ran into the ground

Three players in particular who have been worked extremely hard are; Archie Gray, Pedro Porro, and Dejan Kulusevski. As per Matt Law, those three players have all played more than 1,700 minutes in all competitions since the 22nd of November, which is more than any other Premier League player in that time.

All three players are regular for their countries too (England U21s for Gray), and were playing plenty of football before that date too. At the start of the season, Gray was playing a bit less, but Kulusevski and Porro have been constants pretty much all season.

So far this campaign, Kulusevski has played 3,389 minutes for club and country, Porro has played 3,219 minutes, and Gray has played 2,780 minutes. For context, if you played every single minute of a Premier League season, you would play 3,420 minutes. So, Kulusevski is half an hour away from completing a full league season - in mid February. Porro not far behind that too.

Then, for an 18-year old, that is still an awful lot of minutes for Gray, particularly with virtually all of them being out of position. Him and Kulusevski have arguably been Spurs' two best players this season, despite the lack of rest. Although Porro has not been as good, and has had some poor games - you do have to appreciate some of his performances and creativity given that he is running on empty.

It has been reported recently that Ange is set to have a number of players back (although for how long, who knows). One is said to be Destiny Udogie. Having him back would allow Ange to try a pairing of the Italian at left-back, and Djed Spence at right-back, and thus allowing Porro to be rested.

Two of the other players mentioned were Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, both of which could help give Kulusevski a rest. After some top performances in central midfield, the Sweden international has played more on the right again recently, with Johnson injured. Having the Welshman back fit would help in that regard.

Then, having Maddison in midfield would give Spurs more creativity. If it was just Johnson back, you would feel there would still be too much burden on Kulusevski to be the creator in midfield, but having Maddison back would massively help that.

Unfortunately, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were not on the list of players mentioned as set to be returning, and we know Radu Dragusin has suffered an ACL injury, so it could be a while before Gray gets rested, or at least moved back to midfield. There is the possibility that Ange goes with a duo of Kevin Danso and Ben Davies, but we will see.

Spurs ready to make defender highest paid player at the club

If his absence wasn't so mind blowingly obvious, for the wrong reasons, every game he misses - you may be given for briefly forgetting that Cristian Romero is currently a Tottenham Hotspur player - given how long it has been since we saw him on the pitch.Â

Around a quarter of an hour or so against Chelsea in December is the only time we have seen the Argentine defender since Spurs played Ipswich Town on the 10th November. He picked up an injury a few days later with the national team.Â

Spurs prepared to make defender highest paid player at the club

Nevertheless, according to outlet TBR Football, Spurs are prepared to make Romero the highest paid player at the club, in an attempt to keep him at the club. There have been links from elsewhere in the past, notably Real Madrid.Â

They further stated that last year, Spurs were looking to open talks with Romero regarding a new contract, and that there was communication between the player's camp and the club themselves.Â

However, they do go on to make the point that the defender's open criticism of the club hierarchy in an interview at the end of 2024 could prove to be a stumbling block.

Later on in the report, TBR suggest that some inside the club believe winning the Europa League is their last chance when it comes to being able to keep Romero at Spurs, as it would mean Champions League football next season.

Finally, they state that Spurs are looking at potential replacements for the player, in the form of; Marc Guehi, Edmond Tapsoba, Jonathan Tah, Dean Hujisen, Antonio Silva, and Tomas Araujo.

While there is no doubt that Romero is a very good player, this does feel like quite a surprise. As touched on at the start, he has barely played. This is not a new thing either. In 21/22, he played 22 games, starting 21. In 22/23, he played 27 games, starting 26. In 23/24, he played and started 33 games. So far this season, he has played and started 12 games.

All of the above numbers are league only. So, in four seasons, he has played over 30 games once (he can play a maximum of 26 games this season). Availability is the best ability. It feels like a big gamble to give a player who can not guarantee playing even 30+ league games a season, as good as he may be when he is available.
