Newcastle are readying a £54 million transfer package for Bergvall. However, the Magpies will assess all options for a Bruno Guimaraes successor before submitting offers.

Bergvall remains Newcastle United’s top target this summer with personal terms agreed in principle. They are thought to have already seen a £46 million offer turned down by Tottenham Hotspur.

Someone like Bergvall could be a solid addition. But he is not the only midfielder to have been linked with Newcastle United in recent days. And a lot of fans might prefer someone with more experience and proven quality at the top level.

Why Newcastle need more experience and proven quality in midfield

So far, Newcastle United’s two additions in midfield have been Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba. So, it is easy to see why the supporters might be seeking a more established option in the middle of the park.

Bergvall has experience of playing in the Premier League. But there are quite a few other intriguing options out there who could make sense for one reason or another.

Reports in France have suggested that Newcastle United are progressing in talks to sign Felix Nmecha from Borussia Dortmund. The former Manchester City man would be a high-profile signing.

Talking about former Premier League players, Danilo of Botafogo is thought to be on Newcastle United’s radar as well although those rumours have gone a bit quiet. The Brazilian international had played for Nottingham Forest for a couple of years before moving back to Brazil, where he has found a ton of success.

Other than that, there have been some rumours about Angelo Stiller as well. The German international, compared to Toni Kroos for his style of play, would be an intriguing addition.

Newcastle United need to strengthen considerably in this summer transfer window. And they might be looking to do that by signing Premier League-proven players next, having already added a fair bit of youth in the form of Bazoumana Toure, Ewen Jaouen and Sean Steur, none of whom were playing in England last season.

The other player in question is Spence, who ended up having a phenomenal World Cup campaign with the Three Lions. He was arguably England’s best player alongside Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham as they achieved their best finish since 1966.

Would they be good signings for Newcastle?

Tottenham Hotspur have already splashed out heavily to bring in new players this summer. Now, they might need to move on from their current crop of talents.

It is believed that Tottenham Hotspur would want a fee in the region of £50 million to part ways with Bergvall. That feels like a steep figure but when you see some of the other moves that have taken place in the Premier League, it is not hard to understand why Spurs have set that asking price.

On the other hand, Spence’s valuation has jumped following a breakthrough World Cup campaign. Now, it might take around £40 million to bring him to St James’ Park.

Both could prove to be decent additions to this Newcastle United team, which is a bit thin of Premier League-proven talent at this point in time.

Newcastle United will be looking to bring in reinforcements in several areas across the pitch. One of them is in the middle of the park.

Sandro Tonali has left for Tottenham Hotspur. Bruno Guimaraes could do the same, with personal terms already agreed with Arsenal. That would mean losing the club’s undisputed two best midfielders in the same window.

Sky Sports journalist, Keith Downie, has dropped an update on the situation. And it might not be exactly what we had initially thought.

While speaking on his own YouTube channel regarding the situation, Downie said:

So, Spurs have spent a lot of money this transfer window, as we know. They’ve brought in a whole host of players to please manager Roberto De Zerbi, have a real go of it this summer. I mean, they spent £185 million alone on two midfielders, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and, of course, Sandro Tonali here from Newcastle United.

So, they’ve splashed out. They now need to balance the books. They’re now looking at outgoings. So, the information I have is there’s been a conversation between Tottenham and Newcastle over Lucas Bergvall. And if Newcastle were interested in the player, which I believe they are, what would it take for Newcastle to A put in an offer, and B for that to be accepted?

What I’ve heard is that Tottenham actually came to Newcastle, not so much offered the player up, but had a bit of a conversation about him. Two of the the top brass at the football club have had that conversation. I think it was an exploratory conversation to start with, but it’s since transcended into the fact that Newcastle have now sort of inquired as to themselves what it would take. So look, as I understand it, Newcastle have not had a formal bid turned down.

So, it looks like talks so far between both parties have been exploratory in nature, although there does seem to be some level of interest on the part of Newcastle United. Whether that will lead to a satisfactory bid or not remains to be seen.

Should Newcastle make a move for Bergvall this summer?

It is worth pointing out that Newcastle United did agree a deal with SC Freiburg to sign Johan Manzambi. That was only for the player to opt to move to Aston Villa instead.

So, they still do have a budget left for their midfield reinforcements, which would further increase if Guimaraes did end up leaving as well at some point in this window.

Even though still just 20 years of age, Bergvall does already have a decent level of experience under his belt. If Newcastle United did end up signing him, there is a decent chance that he would be a starter for the Magpies.

Then again, it would all depend on the kind of transfer fee that Tottenham Hotspur are looking for. If it is anything beyond the £50 million mark, a move would not make sense. And even for that figure, there would be a fair bit of risk involved for whoever ends up signing the Swedish midfielder.

So, this update would suggest that it is Spurs who are trying to find a new home for Bergvall, rather than Newcastle United putting in a cold offer for him.

There have also been suggestions that Bergvall is open to exploring a move away from the club. That is understandable, as the youngster has seen his team sign two big-money midfielders this summer, which will affect his game time moving forward if he stays with Spurs.

Would Bergvall be a good fit for Newcastle?

So, judging from this situation, it looks like a move for Bergvall might be a lot more realistic for Newcastle United than first thought. It appears that Tottenham are very open to the idea of the midfielder leaving this summer.

Obviously, a transfer fee would need to be agreed first for any move to happen. That being said, Tottenham’s supposed eagerness could make things a bit easier.

Bergvall might be only 20 years of age, but he has already played 78 games for Tottenham Hotspur. So, he has a decent level of experience under his belt and won’t be the typical youngster signing by any means.

It is also worth mentioning that the Magpies have been linked with the Brazilian international midfield duo of Danilo and Ederson lately, after seeing a move for Johan Manzambi collapse.

It is no secret that Newcastle United need to add quality to their squad all across the pitch. One of the areas in need of reinforcements is up top. Last summer, the Magpies saw Alexander Isak leave for Liverpool.

The club did try to replace him and spent quite a bit of money in order to do that. But they were not successful, as the new arrivals failed to meet expectations.

Nick Woltemade started well but faded away very quickly. On the other hand, Yoane Wissa was even less effective, scoring merely three goals across all competitions last season.

So, expect Newcastle United to go out and sign a forward or two this summer. And it looks like they are aiming to bring in a Manchester City forward, also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.

It is not because they are bad players, but because the level of competition is so high at the club that you need to be world-class consistently just to stay in the starting XI.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush is now on the radar of Newcastle United as a new forward. Tottenham Hotspur are also believed to be interested in him.

Manchester City had spent close to £60 million to sign Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt. At that point in time, he was one of the best forwards in the Bundesliga, having scored 20 goals in 26 games for the German club that season.

That has not translated at Man City though. He has only scored 16 times in 61 appearances for the club, and as a result, there might be an opportunity to sign him this summer.

Omar Marmoush has not been as bad as fans think

Of course, it is very easy to brand Marmoush a ‘transfer failure’ for Manchester City. That would not be looking at the full story though.

Once again, it is very easy to lose one’s place in the Manchester City team. Overall, Marmoush has scored 16 goals and provided six assists for the club. But those have come in 3091 minutes of football.

In other words, Marmoush averages a goal or an assist every 140 minutes for Man City. That is a good return, no matter which way you look at it.

If he can produce something similar for Newcastle United, he would be considered an excellent signing for the club. Now, it remains to be seen if they can get it done or not.

It is not hard to see why Newcastle United might be looking to sign a midfielder this summer. Sandro Tonali has already left, incidentally, to join Tottenham themselves. And Bruno Guimaraes has agreed personal terms with their North London rivals Arsenal.

On the other hand, it looks like the Magpies are intent on building a youth-focused squad this summer. Bazoumana Toure, Ewen Jaouen and Sean Steur have been signed. The oldest of these three is 20 years of age. That is a clear indication of Newcastle United’s strategy.

Of course, someone like Bergvall would fit that strategy. But signing him won’t be easy, as is clear from Tottenham Hotspur already rejecting the bid. Yet, it looks like the Magpies have been handed a boost at the same time.

What Lucas Bergvall has told Tottenham Hotspur about leaving

According to The Athletic, Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur of his preference to seek an opportunity elsewhere this summer.

Bergvall has a contract with Tottenham Hotspur that runs until the summer of 2031. But David Ornstein’s report goes on to state that an exit would be considered if the figures reach a level they deem suitable.

Tottenham have signed Tonali from Newcastle United this summer in a £100 million deal. Mateus Fernandes has been brought in for around £85 million.

So, it is quite easy to see why a 20-year-old midfielder like Bergvall would be weighing up a potential exit this summer rather than risk finding himself spending all season on the bench, as a rotational option at best.

Bergvall’s eagerness to leave boosts Newcastle United

This eagerness to seek a move away from Tottenham, on the part of Bergvall, is good news for Newcastle United in their quest to sign the midfielder.

Of course, they will still need to agree a fee with Spurs. At this moment, it is unclear what kind of a fee they will be looking for to sanction a move.

But when a player wants to leave, more often than not, it ends up happening. So, do not be surprised if Bergvall is on the move this summer.

Will his destination be St James’ Park? That is something which is impossible to predict. The Magpies are working under financial constraints at the moment and might end up falling behind other clubs if there is a race to sign the Swede from Tottenham.

There is not a ton of positivity around Newcastle United at the moment. The Magpies simply have not been able to do enough in the summer transfer market to convince the supporters that the project is moving in the right direction.

This is a team that had finished 12th in the Premier League last season. Now, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon have left, weakening it further. And there is speculation around the futures of Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Hall as well.

On the other hand, when it comes to incomings, the club have had a tough time as well. A couple of deals had looked as good as done only for them to collapse in the final steps. And a number of players might not even be considering the idea of a move to St James’ Park due to a lack of European football.

Tottenham Hotspur are showing some real ambition this summer. Many had thought that it would be a matter of signing either Tonali or Mateus Fernandes. They have agreed deals for both on consecutive days.

It is even more remarkable that the club are doing this after back-to-back 17th place seasons. Obviously, some questions are being raised about the ambition of the players joining them as well. That being said, if they continue on this path, they could be challenging for Champions League spots again, sooner than you think.

As for Tonali, he has already broken his silence on moving to Tottenham and leaving Newcastle United. It looks like Roberto De Zerbi played a big role in making the move happen. While speaking to Sky in Italy, the midfielder said:

“De Zerbi played a huge role in this decision… I don’t give him all the credit, but he deserves a lot.”

Some reports have been floating in the media suggesting that Newcastle United were not happy with how the entire saga played out, especially after how they had backed Tonali during tough times and a ban in the past.

But if Tonali’s comments are anything to go by, it was a decision that everybody is happy with. He said:

“The feelings are positive. It was a bit long, it was difficult. We had an agreement with Newcastle and we parted on very good terms, we talked about it every day.

“They wanted the best for me and we wanted to do the best [deal] for Newcastle, so once you leave like this, it’s different. We’re all happy and I’m ready for this new adventure.”

Well, if that is indeed how it has all played out than there is not much to complain about. Tonali got the move that he wanted. Tottenham got a top player. And Newcastle United brought in a significant transfer fee.

Of course, it does weaken Newcastle United’s squad. And that is the last thing they need after finishing 12th in the Premier League in the previous campaign.

But considering the financial constraints that the Magpies are working under right now, this might be a good chance for them to reinvest that Tonali transfer fee into signing two or three quality players. If they get the recruitment right, it could go a long way in funding the club’s rebuild.

We have already seen signs of that. Newcastle United have agreed on a €50 million deal to sign Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim.

As for replacing Tonali in the middle of the park, it won’t be easy to do. He is a specialist in his role and there are not too many players who have that specific profile.

To be honest, a lot of people had expected this transfer saga to drag on for much longer. Something similar to the Alexander Isak to Liverpool move from last summer.

So, Tottenham Hotspur deserve credit for not letting things drag on. It is best for all parties involved. Now, the Magpies have a ton of time to seek out a replacement and sign him.

That does not mean that the Magpies will be happy with how this entire situation has been handled though. But there unhappiness might be more with the individual than the club signing him. And it is not hard to see why.

According to the same report, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown said on the situation involving Tottenham, Newcastle and Tonali:

“Newcastle have every right to be fuming with Tonali and how he has handled this.

“He’s played a big part in pushing for the move away, it’s been no secret that he’s been looking at different clubs and his agent has held talks to engineer a move away.”

It might not be just about the fact that Tonali is leaving though. One has to recognise that Newcastle United stood beside the player during difficult times, when he was banned from the game.

So, they would have at least expected a bit more from him, when the time came to leave. If Tonali had not seemed so eager to leave, perhaps the Magpies could have gotten an even bigger transfer fee out of his exit. Probably closer to what Man City are paying to bring in Newcastle United academy graduate, Elliot Anderson, from Nottingham Forest. As Brown added:

“So from Newcastle’s point of view, they feel they were owed a bit of loyalty, but the player obviously doesn’t feel the same.

“It’s a harsh reality in football, players are always going to want to move to bigger clubs, so the interest in a move to Arsenal or Man City was what seemed to turn his head.

“Whether joining Tottenham will be the right decision for him, we’ll see, but Newcastle will now be forced to find a replacement for a player they didn’t want to lose.”

Tonali’s move a sign of lack of ambition?

Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the fact that Tonali is leaving Newcastle United for a club that is coming off back-to-back 17th place finishes in the league.

Yes, Newcastle were 12th last season and missed out on Europe. It would be understandable if Tonali decided to move to a club with Champions League football on offer.

With clubs like Arsenal and Man City being linked with Tonali, that might have been a possibility. Instead, he has joined a team who won’t be in Europe, just like the Magpies.

Fair play to Tottenham for being able to attract such players even after a poor campaign. That being said, is such a move a sign of lack of ambition on the part of Tonali or just someone who believes in the long-term picture of Tottenham?

Over the last few days, all the talk surrounding Newcastle United has been about potential exits. It is almost a relief that one of those long-running sagas has now come to an end and the football club can focus on the future.

Of course, that also means that Newcastle United have been weakened significantly and will need to find a way to fill the void being left behind. And taking the financial constraints into consideration, that is not going to be an easy task.

The agreement between the clubs has now been closed and also on the player’s side with Tonali. The fee is higher than the £85 million paid by Spurs to sign Fernandes.

It is a disappointment to see Tonali’s time at Newcastle United coming to an end. But after how the saga had moved over the last few days, most fans had been expecting this.

So, the announcement from Romano does not come as any surprise. Perhaps it is interesting how quickly it got done. A lot of people were expecting it to drag on, like the Alexander Isak to Liverpool saga from last summer. Credit to Tottenham Hotspur, who are showing plenty of ambition right now.

How will Newcastle replace Tonali, who will join Tottenham?

Replacing Tonali is not going to be an easy task, that is for certain. Midfielders like him are a rarity, especially in the modern game when so much is based on physicality.

So, the Magpies might have a tough time finding a like-for-like replacement for Tonali. Perhaps they could look for a shuffle in the middle of the park and replace him with a different kind of midfielder.

At the end of the day, the club do need to ring in some changes. They did finish 12th in the Premier League last season. For all of the quality players they had, that is nearly not good enough.

Over the last few days, we have seen Newcastle United get linked with midfielders like Lamine Camara, Johan Manzambi and more. Expect a few more names to crop up now that the Tonali deal has been agreed.
