Description

Our third Premier League match in the space of eight days sees us head across the capital to take on Spurs, having already registered an impressive 3-0 win over Aston Villa and a 5-1 victory at Southampton over the last week.

Today, the players were preparing in the gym and out on the training pitch, under the watchful eye of Enzo Maresca, as we look to make it four wins on the bounce in all competitions.

Among those hard at work at Cobham was Enzo Fernandez, and our head coach discussed the midfielder's development after his impressive performances recently, having contributed two goals and three assists across our last four Premier League matches.

‘Enzo is improving a lot, especially in terms of understanding the game and position,' said the Italian. 'Now he is in the right position, arriving in the box, always there. This is what we need from the attacking players. For sure he can do things better, not only Enzo but the whole squad, but he is in the right way.’

Our head coach also discussed training at Cobham, offering an insight into how he works with his players day-to-day.

‘I spend many hours understanding how I can help the players improve and to convince them,' Maresca continued. 'Today, we finished the session and the last half-hour was just an extra session for some of the players to try to improve them.

‘We watch games, review games, look at how they can improve. I have four or five assistant coaches that spend time looking at the small details about position, control with the right foot, control with the left, play with the right, play with the left. These kinds of things.’

Enzo Maresca on behind-the-scenes work and wanting the best for his players

Speaking at his press conference ahead of our trip to Tottenham on Sunday, Maresca underlined his role at the club when asked why he has made such a successful start to life at Stamford Bridge. The Blues head into the weekend's fixtures in second place in the table and have enjoyed a flawless European campaign so far, too.

‘The only focus is improving players and the team, no more than that,’ stressed Maresca. ‘I get paid for this, to do my job with the players and the team, so I focus on that and try to give my best every day.

‘I spend many hours understanding how I can help the players improve and to convince them. Today, we just finished the session and the last half-hour was just an extra session for some of the players to try to improve them.

‘We watch games, review games, look at how they can improve. I have four or five assistant coaches upstairs that spend time looking at the small details about position, control with the right foot, control with the left, play with the right, play with the left. These kinds of things.’

Allied to work on the pitch is a desire of Maresca’s to build positive personal relationships with his squad off it.

That can present itself in different ways depending on the player. Following post-match comments he made at Southampton about Noni Madueke’s room for improvement, Maresca explained it is simply another method at his disposal to try to maximise his players’ abilities.

‘The only reason I said this the other day is I want the best for Noni,’ Maresca stated. ‘The only way to get the best from him is to push him every time. Overall he has been working well since we started. Sometimes he drops a little bit and he is not allowed to drop.

'In terms of numbers, he is doing fantastic, goals, assists, off the ball when we ask him to defend and to press he is doing very well.

‘The way I like to have a relationship with the players is to be close,’ added the head coach. ‘In the past at Leicester, I had a fantastic relationship with the players. It’s the same I’m trying to do here.

‘When you say something they don’t like, they think it's because you don’t want to be close, but it’s actually the way to be close and show them I take care of them.'

Enzo Maresca praises midfield duo and updates on winger ahead of Spurs

Our busy December continues on Sunday as we travel across the capital for an always-intense London derby. Maresca rotated his side in midweek against Southampton – seven changes were made – but the strength of the Blues squad was showcased as we secured a 5-1 win.

The Blues head coach has already confirmed one alteration will be made to his starting XI at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will return as Maresca outlined to the media the Spaniard remains our number one.

The rest of the line-up will be determined after tomorrow's session, but Maresca will be without Reece James and Wesley Fofana due to hamstring injuries.

'They are both slowly getting better but as we said recently, it is going to be weeks for them. They are still far [from a return to action]. Otherwise, the only one who is still ill is Misha Mudryk. The rest of the squad is okay.’

Against Southampton, Romeo Lavia was named among the substitutes while Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo were deployed as a midfield duo.

Fernandez claimed an assist at St Mary's – his fifth goal involvement in his last four outings – and Maresca is pleased with the progress the Argentine has made this term.

‘Enzo is improving a lot, especially in terms of understanding the game and position,' said the Blues head coach. 'Now he is in the right position, arriving in the box, always there. This is what we need from the attacking players. For sure he can do things better, not only Enzo but the whole squad, but he is in the right way.’

Caicedo, meanwhile, has been used in very different roles in our past two matches. When Aston Villa visited Stamford Bridge last Sunday, he started at right-back but inverted into midfield when the Blues were in possession.

The Ecuador international was used as a more traditional deep-lying midfielder against Southampton but Maresca believes the inverted full-back role is one Caicedo can play again in the future.

‘Moi as the full-back inverting inside was something in our minds from day one, but because of the Romeo (Lavia) injury and Enzo moment, we used Moi as a holding midfielder,’ Maresca explained.

‘Against Aston Villa, we decided to use him as a full-back and for sure we will see him again [in the future] as on the ball, we have Moi inside next to Romeo and Enzo, so we are quite good, and off the ball he is giving us balance. So, for sure, it could be an option.'

Under-18s report: Chelsea 3-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Description

London derbies are always intense and this Under-18s match was no different. The game was full of action from start to finish.

The visitors took the lead early with Reiss Elliott-Parris scoring just five minutes into the game and he then doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark.

However, our top scorer Sol Gordon responded with a fine finish five minutes later, netting his tenth goal of the 2024/25 season.

We equalised through Ollie Harrison’s strong penalty after Gordon was fouled by Jun’ai Byfield in the area and then just before half-time, schoolboy Reggie Walsh put us ahead with a powerful strike into the top corner to make it 3-2.

In the second half, when it looked like we were in control, Ellis Lehane connected with a looping cross to head the ball past Hudson Sands to level the score with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Quick start

We knew this London derby would be a fiery encounter and it didn’t disappoint. Chelsea were quickly forced back into our half, with Tottenham's striker Elliott-Parris proving a threat as he charged into the penalty box aggressively. Luckily our defensive duo, Lewi Richards and Olutayo Subuloye, communicated well to shut him down.

But, the visitors broke the deadlock soon after through an unaddressed set-piece. A swinging corner from Harry Byrne found Elliott-Parris, who smashed the ball past our keeper.

We knew this was going to be a battle and the Blues showed resilience to get back into the game. Frankie Runham did well on the wing, surging forward as we searched for an equaliser. However, Spurs stayed compact and made it difficult to break through. Gordon followed with a curling shot, but it lacked the power to trouble Dylan Thompson in goal.

The action then flowed the other way. Sands was called into a bold save from Dexter Oliver’s powerful strike inside the box.

Genesis Antwi showcased a brilliant spell of play, using his immense speed to weave past Tottenham defenders with ease. Spotting Joseph Wheeler-Henry at the far post, he attempted a strike at goal, but a strong Tottenham block denied the chance.

Chelsea grew in confidence as Gordon flicked the ball to Runham, who found space and sprinted into the box. However, the onrushing keeper closed him down, forcing the ball just wide of the post.

Sands was then called into two crucial saves in quick succession. First, he denied a dangerous Byrne corner that bounced threateningly near the post. Moments later, Oliver unleashed a shot from inside the box, but Sands reacted quickly to keep Spurs from extending their lead.

Approaching the half-hour mark, Antwi had another attempt on goal. With tricky footwork, he worked his way into the box and fired a low shot that skimmed across the goal before drifting wide.

Just as it seemed like Chelsea were closing in on an equaliser, Spurs struck again. A long looping ball from Byrne found Oliver, who utilised the wing before cutting it back to Elliott-Parris. The No9 twisted and turned past our defenders before finishing coolly into the bottom corner.

Our time now

Chelsea clawed back into the game through a brilliant link-up. Antwi, using his speed and skill, played a perfect through ball to Gordon, who unleashed a powerful strike past Thompson in goal.

We faced an unexpected setback when Wheeler-Henry was forced off with an injury, replaced by Harry McGlinchey. But the team adapted well and were soon awarded a penalty. Leo Cardoso set up Gordon where his charge towards goal was halted by Byfield, leading the referee to blow his whistle. Harrison stepped up and smashed the penalty home with precision and power.

Tottenham thought they had regained the lead when George Feeney tapped the ball in from close range, but the offside flag went up immediately.

Moments before half-time, Chelsea took the lead in style. Antwi worked his way down the wing and cut the ball back to the top of the box. Walsh took one touch before firing a rocket into the top left corner, leaving the Spurs keeper helpless. Chelsea entered the break with a 3-2 lead.

Intensity continues

We came back out with the same momentum we had before the break. Cardoso had the first real chance of the second half with a drilled strike from the top of the penalty box, but somehow the Spurs keeper managed to kick it away.

Soon after, Runham tried his luck from just inside the box, but his shot lifted over the crossbar. Action quickly swinged to the other end where Spurs had another disallowed goal, this time through Byfield’s powerful strike.

We were starting to cause Tottenham real problems in front of our home supporters. Runham had another go, but his effort skimmed just over the bar, plus Antwi came agonisingly close with a powerful strike from a tight angle, but it rebounded off the crossbar.

Despite our strong spell, Tottenham managed to equalise in a frustrating moment for the Blues. Substitute Lehane beat Sands to a deep cross and headed the ball into the bottom corner.

The passion grew even stronger as we headed into the closing stages, showing real grit as we attempted to restore our lead. As the final minutes approached, we thought we had sealed a last-minute winner when Richards smashed a volley from close range, but the Spurs keeper stood tall and denied the goal.

We pushed hard throughout stoppage time, pressing relentlessly and desperately to find the back of the net, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Tottenham keeper. The game ended with the spoils shared.
