Tottenham transfers: Spurs revisit chance to sign hugely gifted attacker despite two more names being on Postecoglou's radar

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly set their sights on signing a top Premier League winger they first missed out on landing way back in 2019.

Ange Postecoglou remains on the hunt for attacking reinforcements after seeing his side decimated by injuries so far this season, with another wide player firmly on his radar.

And latest reports suggest that Manchester City and England forward Jack Grealish could make a sensational switch to north London, five years after Tottenham first tried to sign him.

Daniel Levy initially bid £15million for Grealish when Aston Villa were in the Championship, upping that offer to £25m only to be swatted aside by Villa who wanted in the region of £40m for their talisman.

Just two years later, Grealish became the most expensive English player of all time when he joined City for £100m, but things have not always gone to plan for the England international on a personal level at The Etihad despite the club’s trophy success – and now Tottenham are said to be back on the hunt for his services.

Indeed, Football Insider reports that doubts over his future at City has sparked interest from north London again, with Postecoglou wanting to add some experience to a young squad.

There is no mention of what sort of fee could be involved, although Grealish remains under contract until 2027 so won’t come cheap despite his overall lack of productivity at City.

Spurs’ chase for Grealish comes amid continued links to Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and Nottingham Forest star Callum Hudson-Odoi, who are three and five years younger than Grealish. Eze, however, could cost more than a move for Grealish, while Hudson-Odoi will certainly be less.

However, the report adds that a move for Grealish in January is almost certainly a non-starter and that any transfer will have to be held back until the summer.

Grealish links add more Son uncertainty

Grealish being linked with Tottenham only adds to the uncertainty that continues to exist surrounding skipper Son Heung-min’s long-term future in north London.

The South Korean, who is heading towards a decade at Spurs, will be out of contract next summer and while it’s reported that the club are willing to to take up his option of an extra year they are not willing to commit to an extended deal for the 32-year-old.

Tottenham already had one on the future when bringing Wilson Odobert from Burnley over the summer, while outstanding young talent Mikey Moore has already shown flashes of his quality this season.

Brennan Johnson has made the right-wing spot his own with his goalscoring exploits this term but the left side continues to be a revolving door, given injuries to Son, Odobert and the on-loan Timo Werner.

Bringing in Grealish would be seen as somewhat of a gamble for Tottenham, depending on his price tag, given the the lack of productivity to back up his exceptional talent.

As for City’s stance on the player, Football Insider reports that new sporting director Hugo Viana is being tasked with signing a ‘big name’ replacement as the club look to cash in on Grealish.

The winger has not featured for City since the 2-1 win at Wolves on October 20 and was also forced to pull out of the England squad for their upcoming Nations Lague clashes against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

Latest Tottenham news: Levy standing firm over Romero/ New left-back eyed

Tottenham will reportedly not entertain bids for Cristian Romero from Real Madrid, which could leave Everton open to the possibility of being raided instead.

Spurs have enjoyed the qualities of Romero in their side for the past three seasons. He has grown into one of the Premier League’s best defenders in that time.

But there is danger that he could be prised away, with Real Madrid frequently linked with his signing.

According to Football Insider, though, that will be a very difficult deal for the La Liga giants to pull off.

Meanwhile, Gent left-back Archie Brown is on the radar of Tottenham, West Ham, Chelsea, Brentford and Leeds ahead of the January transfer window, TEAMtalk can reveal.

IN FOCUS – Grealish stats at Man City

While the former Villa man has won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and a Champions League title during his time at The Etihad, his personal stats have not really done justice to his huge price tag.

Indeed, the report states Spurs will not entertain bids for Romero as Real plan to reignite their long-term interest.

They are believed to be desperate to keep hold of the Argentine, and in fact are planning to add to their defensive line in January rather than weaken it.

Everton could be in danger

That could leave Everton in danger, with Jarrad Branthwaite also said to be in Real’s sights.

The English centre-back has been described as an ‘important target’ for Los Blancos.

And unlike Tottenham, whose stance is that they absolutely don’t want to sell their centre-back, the Toffees are slightly less lenient.

While they’d like not to lose him, TEAMtalk understands that a £75million offer is likely to see the centre-back sold.

With the knowledge that Branthwaite is more attainable than Romero, the La Liga giants might well choose to go after him.

Tottenham round-up: Postecoglou concerns

With Spurs currently 10th in the Premier League, concerns are beginning to arise. Alan Pardew felt Ange Postecoglou looked “crestfallen” after the side’s last game, while he also questioned their transfer policy.

Meanwhile, Tottenham could allow Sergio Reguilon to cancel his contract in January, six months before it is supposed to be up, as there are two La Liga sides who want to sign him immediately.

Tottenham could immediately replace him, as TEAMtalk understands they are one of many Premier League sides interested in Gent left-back Archie Brown.

Spurs are also said to be keen on Facundo Buonanotte, amid his top start to the season on loan at Leicester.

Tottenham struggles

Spurs have kept sides at bay the same amount this season as they did last, and Romero is a big part of that, having played all 11 Premier League games this term.

Though the wins are not coming as frequently as they were last term, keeping key players who were at the club last season will given Tottenham the best chance of getting back into a good position.

Postecoglou exit: Doubts grow over 'crestfallen' Tottenham boss with transfer policy questioned amid shock departure claims

Description

Doubts have begun to surface that all is not well with Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham, with one former Premier League boss revealing his concerns for the Aussie and why the signs point towards a “very mediocre season”.

The 59-year-old made a big impression during his first season at the helm, steering the club top of the table after eight wins from his opening 10 games, though ultimately they narrowly missed out on a Champions League place with Tottenham finishing in fifth, two points shy of Aston Villa.

This season, hopes were bright that the club could push on to the next level and a £133.5m spending spree over the summer, including the club-record £65m signing of Dominic Solanke, suggested Spurs were ready to take that next step.

However, Sunday’s shock 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich – who claimed a first Premier League win in over 8,000 days in the process – has typified the frustrating time Postecoglou and Spurs have had of things so far.

Now former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has expressed his concerns for the former Celtic boss, offering his insight into why all is not well.

“I watched Ange’s interview after the game and he looked crestfallen,” Pardew told talkSPORT. “I’ve never seen him look that down – he looked really down today and that’s a worry for me because we are only 11 games into the season.

“The worry with Spurs is that we’re going down this path that you went down last year with Ange not wanting to change and here we are again. We’re 11 games in and still this inconsistency, this high line, he’s still operating. It must be a worry.”

Pardew added: “When you look at the stats – Spurs have won five and lost five, drawn one, 23 goals for and 13 against – it’s got the markings of a very, very mediocre season unfortunately.”

Spurs brought in teenage stars Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall over the summer and Pardew fears it does not smack of huge ambition.

“I did say at the start of the season that Tottenham’s transfer policy didn’t smack of a team who were trying to win the league – it looked like a team who were trying to rebuild with younger players and hopefully getting a few nuggets somewhere down the line.”

Pardew offers Postecoglou advice as Spurs boss acknowledges his own failures

We understand that while Tottenham expect to be challenging for the top four, there is no long-term concerns over Postecoglou’s future. Given the tightness of the Premier League table, Tottenham, while currently down in 10th, only remain three points adrift of the top four.

Successive defeats – to Galatasaray on Thursday in the Europa League and Ipswich on Sunday – is not an ideal way in which to enter an international break, but the club know that a couple of wins when they return to action can set the tone for a push up the table.

However, with their next game coming at champions Manchester City and then Roma in the Europa League, Spurs will then be tested when they take on two sides in Fulham and Bournemouth who are themselves looking to push into that upper echelons of the Premier League.

Postecoglou has won admirers for his straight-talking nature and he admitted after Sunday’s defeat that any failures rested on him and that he would work hard to put things right.

“It’s just down to me. I’m not getting consistent performances from the players,” he told the media.

“It’s something I need to address. I’m the person in charge so that’s usually the way it goes.

“I take responsibility when their performances don’t meet the levels that they should.”

Offering advice to Postecoglou, Pardew – who has not worked in English football since leaving West Brom in 2018 – added: “When you have a bad performance as a manager looking crestfallen isn’t the greatest gift that you can give to your fans.

“You need to say ‘we didn’t have a good day, we had issues and we’re going to bounce back next week’.”

Latest Tottenham transfer news: Reguilon’s exit plan / Real Madrid accelerate Spurs raid

Spurs, meanwhile, could be set to part ways with Sergio Reguilon amid claims the out-of-favour Spaniard could be set to have his contract cancelled in N17.

Reguilon has only made the matchday squad once this season – in a Carabao Cup clash at Coventry – and is a long way down the pecking order under Postecoglou.

As a result, it’s reported that Spurs could grant the player a free transfer, with Reguilon having already lined up his next move.

Elsewhere, Tottenham will also reportedly face a battle to retain the services of Cristian Romero in the January window amid claims Real Madrid are ready to raise their efforts to prise the Argentine to the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos have lost another defender in Eder Militao to a season-ending injury, leaving Carlo Ancelotti short of options. However, any move for the World Cup winning Tottenham star will not come cheap.

And finally, Tottenham have reportedly joined the growing race to sign attacking midfielder Facundo Buonanotte, who is currently excelling on loan at Leicester City.

His parent club, Brighton, are reportedly open to the Argentine’s sale, though his apparent asking price may cause Daniel Levy to think twice.

Tottenham man plans to cancel contract after 67 games, with return to former club in sight

Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon is reportedly preparing to cancel his contract in January, and his former club Sevilla are preparing a move to bring him back.

Reguilon has not been seen in a Spurs shirt at all this season. He has only once been included in a squad this term, when he was an unused substitute in the third round League Cup match against Coventry in September.

The last time Reguilon did actually play for Tottenham was in 2021/22, before he was sent on loan to Atletico Madrid the following season, and both Manchester United and Brentford last term.

Aware that he is surplus to requirements, Caught Offside reports the left-back plans to terminate his contract in January – it is due to run out in the summer anyway.

The report cites interest in the Spaniard from La Liga outfits Sevilla – where Reguilon played 38 games in 2019/20 – and Getafe.

It’s believed both clubs are set to begin talks with Tottenham and Reguilon’s representatives, which could see his deal in north London ended so he could move on a free transfer.

DON’T MISS: The 10 Tottenham players out of contract in 2025: Stick or twist as big questions answered

La Liga sides not alone with Reguilon interest

Reguilon has played for five different Spanish sides, so a return to La Liga could indeed be ideal for him.

But Sevilla and Getafe are seemingly not the only sides who want to land the left-back.

Reports of late suggested his former boss Jose Mourinho wants to take him to Fenerbahce in January.

It was felt he would be available on a cut-price deal, but it now seems he could leave for nothing, with Fenerbahce perhaps disappointed given two other clubs have made bigger strides towards landing Reguilon.

Tottenham round-up: Spurs could lose two big assets

Tottenham could lose some big assets soon, too. Real Madrid have been frequently linked with Cristian Romero, and it’s reported they could move for him in January, while they also want Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, which could spare Spurs.

Meanwhile, Johnny Cardoso, who Tottenham have a priority option to sign in the summer, is on the radar of Aston Villa, and the north London outfit might have no defence if the Villans go for him in the winter.

That would be a big shame for Spurs given even the midfielder’s own club, Real Betis, feel he’s destined to move to Tottenham when they can activate their option.

Meanwhile, Heung-min Son has been identified as a potential signing for the Saudi Pro League, given his camp are disappointed that the forward won’t be offered a new deal in north London.

Reguilon timeline at Spurs

Joined Tottenham in a £32million deal on September 19 2020, with Real Madrid including a £27.5m buy-back clause in his five-year contract.

Made his Spurs debut against Chelsea 10 days later in the League Cup against Chelsea and got an assist in a game his side won on penalties.

Scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win over Leeds in May 2021 and enjoyed an impressive maiden campaign in north London.

A loss of form saw him struggle for consistency in his second campaign, despite making 31 appearances in all competitions and he was loaned to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2022.

Only made 12 appearances for the LaLiga giants back in his homeland and was surprisingly loaned out to Premier League rivals Man Utd at the start of the 2023/24 season due to their left-back struggles.

Lasted only half the season at Old Trafford as United opted to activate a break clause within the loan agreement after the return to fitness of Luke Shaw.

Spent the second half of last season at Brentford and impressed. However, the Bees decided against making the deal a permanent one.

Was not included in Tottenham’s Premier League squad for the current campaign after failing to secure himself a move away from the club over the summer and failing to impress Ange Postecoglou.

Has scored twice and added eight assists in 67 appearances for the club to date – stats that look likely to stay that way as he eyes a January exit.

Tottenham news: Hugo Lloris reveals 'no filter' Conte extremes that left Spurs players sticking fingers in ears

Description

In the latest extracts from his autobiography, Hugo Lloris has revealed how the Tottenham players struggled to cope with Antonio Conte’s extreme personality and methods.

The Italian impressed during his first 12 months in north London as he guided Spurs into the Champions League but things began to unravel during his second season before he eventually the club in March 2023.

And Lloris has explained how the now Napoli boss Conte was ‘tormented’ whenever Spurs failed to win matches and had to get his frustration out by lashing out at his squad.

The former Tottenham captain confessed that some players developed a fear of failure under the Italian and were unable to express themselves on the pitch as a result.

Lloris said (via The Standard): “I found Antonio Conte to be quite a character, driven by victory, which gave him energy, but he found it very hard to control his frustration when we started drawing, let alone losing because his inner torment had to get out; and if he was tormented, then everyone had to share that torment too, and things could get very complicated very fast.

“He told me once that in any given week, his happiness lasted an hour, just after winning, and that was it. In training, he oversaw everything, organising tactical sessions with 10 outfield players against one goalie; but it was hard for the creative players to find their places in his restrictive game-play.

“The rigidity of the structure and set sequences did us a lot of good at first but, after a few months, teams learned how to play against us and it became tougher to win.

“During matches, Conte was as extreme and eruptive as he appeared, garnering respect and fear. Such a strong personality pushed wingers to prefer to play on the side opposite the dugout.”

Lloris reflects on Conte methods

Lloris, who now plays in MLS at Los Angeles FC, also revealed that Conte was honest but had no filter, regularly unleashing on the players when results did not go their way.

Indeed, Conte was not necessarily all that bothered about performances and was more about results, which led to Tottenham players eventually having to block out his words.

He added: “I have never forgotten our first defeat under Conte: a 2–1 loss to NS Mura in Slovenia in the Uefa Conference League. Even though I wasn’t playing, I was still entitled to his screams and reproaches, just like everyone else. In squad meetings, we would spend at least 30 minutes a day doing video analysis, not forgetting the interminable preparation camps at our training centre.

“After the defeat in Maribor, he had screamed: ‘Mura, Mura, who’s Mura?! We lost to Mura!’ I can still hear him.

“If a player needed a little love, he’d better not knock at Conte’s door. For Conte, trust is earned in training. He has no filter; he’s sincere and honest. He’s a manager who lives only by results, whereas, from a player’s perspective, performance is important too.

“That season, when we lost 3–2 to Manchester United (a Ronaldo hat-trick), a result which didn’t reflect our performance, I told Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Harry Kane in the dressing room: ‘They may have just beaten us, but I bet you we finish above them.’ And so we did, ending up in fourth place after battering Arsenal 3–0 on the last day, situating ourselves halfway between Conte’s demanding nature and a little self-management because, by dint of being whipped and screamed at, we eventually stuck our fingers in our ears.”

Latest Tottenham news: Spurs eyeing Prem attacker / Romero to push for Real move

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the growing race to sign an exciting Premier League attacking midfielder currently excelling on loan at Leicester City.

Argentine forward Facundo Buonanotte is the player in question, with the highly-rated 19-year-old currently on loan with the Foxes from Brighton.

His performances have seen the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City sit up and take notice and now Fichajes reports that Spurs are also keen on his signature.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero could hunt a big transfer to Real Madrid in 2025, while Carlo Ancelotti is rumoured to be plotting three big exits if he remains in charge.

A report has claimed Romero is ‘increasingly likely to push’ for a Real Madrid move if they accelerate their pursuit of him ahead of next summer.

Real Madrid transfers: Tottenham stalwart and Man Utd target eyed by Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid are keen to bring in defensive reinforcements and have reportedly identified Tottenham and Everton stars Cristian Romero and Jarrad Branthwaite as targets.

The LaLiga giants are looking to bring in cover for centre-back Eder Militao who is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering his second ACL injury in 15 months. David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are also in their 30s and they will need to be replaced in the near future.

Several names have already been linked, with RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba and Spanish international Aymeric Laporte on their shortlist. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have also looked to the Premier League, where two players have caught their eye.

As reported by CaughtOffside, Romero has rejected Real Madrid’s interest in the past, but the Spanish club could make another move for him in the January window.

Although Tottenham are keen to keep Romero, his future remains ‘uncertain.’ He is under contract until 2027 and despite Spurs being keen to tie him down to an extension, they have been unable to do so thus far.

Branthwaite, on the other hand, is also under contract with Everton until 2027. He was a top target for Manchester United over the summer and remains on their radar ahead of the January window, despite them having three previous bids rejected for him.

Branthwaite is described as an ‘important target’ for Real Madrid but sources have consistently told TEAMtalk that Everton won’t budge on his price tag, which stands at over £75m.

Real Madrid target TWO Premier League centre-backs

Recent reports have suggested that Romero could ‘push’ for a move to Real Madrid if the LaLiga club launch a bid for him in 2025.

Tottenham chairman Dany Levy has already made it clear that he will demand a huge fee for the defender, however, with Spurs said to value the Argentine international at a whopping £150m.

Sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk that Real Madrid do hold genuine interest in Romero but an exit from Tottenham is unlikely in January.

The North London side could be forced to consider a sale at the end of the season if he doesn’t sign a new contract before then, however.

Everton, meanwhile, are prepared for more offers for Branthwaite in January after they managed to keep hold of him over the summer.

The 21-year-old is widely considered to be one of the best young defenders in the world and it’s no surprise to see former Toffees boss Ancelotti keen on a reunion.

As mentioned, Everton won’t budge on their price tag of over £75m for Branthwaite. They are also set to be taken over by The Friedkin Group by the end of the year and that should give them the financial capability to offer the England international a lucrative new contract.

With that in mind, only a huge bid would give Real Madrid the chance to sign Romero or Branthwaite in January.

Real Madrid round-up: Man City target Valverde / Tchouameni to leave?

Meanwhile, Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde is reportedly a target for Manchester City as they look to bring in cover for injured superstar Rodri.

Reports from Spain suggest Man City are ‘very interested’ in the 26-year-old, who is a mainstay in Real Madrid’s starting XI and has a whopping €1bn (£830m / $1.1bn) release clause in his contract.

However, Real Madrid ‘re not willing to let go of one of their pillars without a fight. Valverde has renewed his contract with the white club on several occasions, Real Madrid could reject any offer for the young Uruguayan, especially considering his importance within Carlo Ancelotti ‘s system.’

However, sources have revealed to TEAMtalk that Real Madrid are willing to consider offers for another midfielder – Aurelien Tchouameni.

The French international is a long-term target for Liverpool. His poor performances this season mean that Ancelotti will sanction his departure, but only if a club matches his £100m price tag.

Tottenham transfers: Spurs join race to sign explosive attacker valued at £41m by Premier League rivals

The teenager certainly fits the type of profile Tottenham are currently looking at, given the recent additions of the likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert and South Korean youngster Min-hyeok Yang.

Buonanotte has notched three goals and added two assists in 11 appearances for Leicester so far this season and is also attracting attention from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, Spanish outlet Fichajes claims that Spurs have ‘set their sights’ on signing the South American as a potential long-term replacement for skipper Son Heng-min, who will be out of contract next summer.

Brighton are not willing to allow the player to leave on the cheap though, with the report suggesting they will sell but only for offers of around €50million (£41m/$53m).

That asking price might be a bit too rich for Tottenham, given they already have an abundance of young wide talent to pick from – including academy product Mikey Moore.

However, if the club does decide to move on from Son – with Spurs expected to take up his one-year contract extension option but not commit to a longer deal – then a move for Buonanotte could well be one to keep watching.

Leicester also pushing to keep Buonanotte

Leicester, meanwhile, are also keen on making the winger’s stay a permanent one but will struggle to compete with the north London side from a financial standpoint.

Buonanotte largely features on the right side as a genuine winger or midfielder but can also play as a No.10, a position he has been taking up for the Foxes so far this term.

If he did move to Tottenham, would likely be a direct rival for Brennan Johnson’s right-wing spot but could also cover for James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski as an attacking midfielder.

The Seagulls star, who has made 50 appearances for his parent club, is known for his creativity, dribbling ability and vision and would add to an already talented crop of youngsters in north London.

Latest Tottenham news: Romero hunts Real switch / Cardoso signing snag

Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero could hunt a big transfer to Real Madrid in 2025, while Carlo Ancelotti is rumoured to be plotting three big exits if he remains in charge.

A report has claimed Romero is ‘increasingly likely to push’ for a Real Madrid move if they accelerate their pursuit of him ahead of next summer.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are reportedly keen on Real Betis pair Johnny Cardoso and Diego Llorente, and a swoop for the former would force Tottenham to act.

Spurs have an option to buy Cardoso during a two-week window in June 2025 for £21million (€25m/$27m), which was agreed as part of Giovani Lo Celso’s return to Betis.

Aston Villa are reportedly keen on Real Betis pair Johnny Cardoso and Diego Llorente, and a swoop for the former would force Tottenham to act.

Villa have grown to be one of the Premier League’s most exciting sides in the past couple of seasons. After finishing fourth last term, they find themselves sixth at the moment.

Unai Emery has built a squad who can compete at the top of the table, and he is not done.

According to Spanish outlet Ficherio, Villa are following Real Betis pair Cardoso and Llorente.

Villa last hunted Betis in January 2023, when they signed left-back Alex Moreno, who has since moved on to Nottingham Forest.

But they might have mixed results with their current agenda, given it’s known Cardoso might end up at Tottenham, who have an option to buy him during a two-week window in June 2025 for £21million (€25m/$27m).

Tottenham clause in place

That summer clause being triggered by Tottenham is reportedly seen as a certainty by Betis themselves.

But if Villa were to come in with a bid prior to that – in January – Spurs might have no defence against it. But if they were to move in the summer, the north London outfit would be able to act themselves and secure the move.

They do have a sell-on clause for Cardoso, so if Villa were to swoop before that time comes, Tottenham would still get something.

Llorente, meanwhile, might not have been tipped for a move back to the Premier League following his spell with relegated Leeds in 2021/22, but he’s seen as a standout player with Betis, so Villa could indeed go after him.

Aston Villa round-up: Big clubs in for Duran

Villa striker Jhon Duran has been one of the club’s most in-form players this season, regularly scoring from the bench. Of late, it was reported that Paris Saint-Germain are preparing to move for him.

That follows Patrick Vieria telling Arsenal the striker is “the right player” for them given his qualities.

Jacob Ramsey is also still being courted by Tottenham, who are expected to move for the star midfielder.

But elsewhere, Villa are interested in a forward themselves, with Bryan Mbeumo on their radar after a fast start to the season.

Who is Cardoso?

TEAMtalk features expert Ryan Baldi has looked into the career of Cardoso so far…

Cardoso was born in New Jersey and has represented the USA at under-23 and senior level, but to all intents and purposes he is a Brazilian footballer.

Born to Brazilian parents, the Cardosos moved back to their South American homeland when baby Joao Lucas – nicknamed “Johnny” – was just a few months old.

Cardoso came through the youth academy at Internacional to make his senior debut for the club a few days before his 18th birthday.

Tottenham transfers: Spurs star to 'push' for Real Madrid move as Ancelotti plots brutal triple exit

The Spanish giants are planning to revamp their side by ‘splashing the cash’ and Ange Postecoglou is ‘in danger’ of his squad being raided.

While the centre-back has enjoyed his spell at Tottenham, as it has allowed him to take the next step in his career, he is enticed by the idea of joining Real Madrid, arguably the biggest club in the world.

GiveMeSport state that Spurs have had to be ‘patient’ in contract talks with Romero of late. The Argentine could halt these discussions altogether if Real Madrid make an official approach for his services.

Spurs are in a strong negotiating position as Romero’s current deal does not expire until June 2027. Romero could become the latest player to swap Spurs for Madrid in a big-money deal, following the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.

Los Blancos want to sign a top centre-half at the end of the campaign and view Romero as being ‘more attainable’ than William Saliba of Arsenal.

Should Romero move to the Spanish capital, then he would help them move on from David Alaba and finally replace Nacho following his exit over the summer.

Madrid tried to sign Leny Yoro in July but did not offer enough money for him, which allowed Manchester United to win the transfer chase.

According to a separate update from Spanish source Fichajes, Ancelotti is looking to offload three players next year as part of Madrid’s squad overhaul.

The Italian is under pressure to turn results around, but if he remains in charge then he will try to replace Alaba, Aurelien Tchouameni and Ferland Mendy.

Alaba could be replaced by Romero if Madrid are successful in raiding Spurs, while Tchouameni remains of interest to Liverpool after they previously missed out on him in 2022.

Mendy’s place in the squad is under threat as Madrid remain eager to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich. The left-back could follow in Kylian Mbappe’s footsteps by letting his contract expire before moving to Madrid on a free transfer.

Romero exit would be damaging

Spurs boss Postecoglou would be hugely frustrated if Romero left. The 26-year-old is one of his best players and has formed a strong defensive partnership with Micky van de Ven.

Postecoglou is aiming to help Spurs become top four regulars once again and end their trophy drought, but Romero’s departure would set them back on that process.

Spurs would get a massive fee for Romero – a transfer worth as much as £150million (€180.7m / $193.8m) has been mentioned. However, it would take time for the club to land a replacement, and for that replacement to settle in alongside Van De Ven.

For Madrid, signing Romero would improve their hugely talented squad even further. The World Cup winner could form a brilliant centre-back partnership with either Antonio Rudiger or Eder Militao.

Tottenham news: La Liga pursuit; star’s camp unhappy

Another Spurs ace on Madrid’s radar is right-back Pedro Porro. Madrid’s top target for the position is Trent Alexander-Arnold, though they will swoop for Porro if the England star remains at Liverpool.

Reports claim Spurs are preparing for life without Porro and have set their sights on Rayo Vallecano full-back Andrei Ratiu.

You can read all the details on this latest transfer rumour here.

Separate reports suggest Son Heung-min’s entourage are ‘not too happy’ with Spurs amid claims the forward will not be offered a new contract.

Son’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season, and the Saudis are hoping to snap him up alongside Liverpool’s Mo Salah.

Son has been one of the biggest names at Spurs for the past few seasons. Since Harry Kane left, he has arguably been the best player at the club.

But of late, it has been suggested that Son won’t be offered a new contract, and TBRFootball reports that could lead to a transfer for the South Korean.

Indeed, it’s stated the player’s camp are ‘not too happy’ with how things have played out.

But Son is emerging as a player of interest for the Saudi Pro League, who have noticed that his camp are angry at the decision.

It’s amid a push for Mohamed Salah, who the report states is still the top target in Saudi, and interest in Son means they could now take two of the biggest names in the Premier League.

Son’s camp opinions changing

Son is under contract with Spurs until the end of the season, at which point it’s suggested the club have the option of extending it for a year.

It is believed the forward’s camp have been told that is what will happen.

Initial reports suggested they were shocked that Son would not instead be offered a new deal.

But their anger at the club could well cause them to look elsewhere for their star, meaning Saudi Pro League interest could prevail over Daniel Levy’s proposed route.

Tottenham round-up: Son replacements sought

Tottenham already seem to be working on replacing Son with a new forward. The latest reports are of interest in Kevin Zenon, an Argentine player who they’d like to slowly integrate into the side.

There have also been fresh reports of interest in Callum Hudson-Odoi after Spurs were keen in the summer, though he has been told he needs to star for Nottingham Forest this season before he’ll move.

Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano defender Andrei Ratiu is on the radar of the north Londoners, amid danger of Pedro Porro leaving for Real Madrid.

There is also interest in AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, though it’s believed his club will do their best to tie him down ahead of the January window.
